I live in Maryland and just can't seem to find Fuji DVD+r Discs made in Japan anymore! Does ANYONE know where I can purchase them at??? My local Best Buy and Staples stores are only selling the ones made in China now and they really suck. Coasters and bad burns out the ying yang! The Fuji DVD+r MIJ burned flawlessly everytime and I hardly ever had a problem. I burned approx. 800 of them and hardly ever a problem but no one is carrying them anymore around here! Can't stand the made in China crap! Had better results with the TDK made in China CMC's but luv those Fuji's from Japan. Appreciate any help from some Maryland locals or anyone as to where to find these discs!

I hate to pimp sites but I am going to make an exception here. Go to Rima.com and buy yourself some Taiyo Yuden 8x+ disc 100 for 39.00 + shipping and you will have a notch above Fuji MIJ.

Thanks for the info.! I know you said buy the +R's but I bought some Taiyo Yudens DVD-R's a long time ago from supermediastore.com and alot of my friends had alot of trouble playing them in their dvd player. Their players wouldn't accept them. Do you think the +R's would be more acceptable? I couldn't even play the -R's in one of my older dvd players that seemingly plays almost everything. Is the Taiyo Yuden +R's a very well accepted media amongst various brands of dvd players in your opinion? Anybody out there had any acceptability problems with the +R's?

@kenkell

Any Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sams Club, Stapples, Office Depot should have the Fuji DVD+R "Made In Japan." You just need to dig around them stacks/piles a little longer that's all.

@kenkell

i found this rather odd

for the most part, DVD-R format SHOULD be more compatible with stand alones than dvd+r~ (unless of course you booktype the DVD+R to dvd-rom)...so, that is why i found your post quite interesting...

secondly, i think you mean the Fuji DVD+R discs over in your local area are MADE IN TAIWAN, there is a BIG difference between "made in taiwan" and your claim of them being "made in china" :)

lastly, aland has given a good recommendation, rima.com is a very reputable site offering GENUINE Taiyo Yudens, IF you say you have already had
Quote:

with no problems, then, you can get the unbranded Taiyo Yudens for a good price, also supermediastore.com also sells GENUINE Taiyo Yudens, haven't checked them out recently, but the prices should be similar~ here ya go, give yourself a few options, it's slightly higher price @ supermediastore, $0.99, so, go with rima.com~ :)

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-plus...

good luck with your decision, you can't go wrong getting the unbranded Taiyo Yudens, as long as they are GENUINE, which both these places are~

Hey Thanks guys! And yes, it was my mistake, I did mean Taiwan instead of China! I'm going to do some more searching in the stores for the MIJ, but may think of trying out the TY DVD+R silver thermals from Rima. The Fuji MIJ +R's had a Yuden code anyway. I know it does seem strange that the +R's seem more widely accepted then the -R's but that has been my experience. The TY -R's I had were only accepted buy about 10 of the 20 or so friends and their various types of dvd players I backed up dvd movie files for. The TDK +R's and Fuji +R's have been accepted by everyone and anyone I have ever backed up and burned dvd movies files for. I've never had person tell me they weren't able to play a +R from me of any kind in their dvd player.

What's the brand name and model# of your dvd-rw drive?

I also stick to the plus format,but I booktype all my backups to dvd-rom which allows for better compatability on stand alones and other dvd drives.The dash cannot be booktyped.

Download this free handy program to ID those discs and also see if yours are booktyped:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...

Here's what dvdidentier tells me,notice the bold for booktype:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [YUDEN000]
Media Type ID : [T02]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your dash sounds about the same percentage as my dash on stand alones. I'm curious to see how yours check out on that booktype in that log.

Hi, Its a Philips DVD+-R DVD8631. It came standard on my Dell 8400 computer about a year ago. Have the latest firmware also for it. What do you mean by booktyping? Sorry, but I don't know!
Thanks!

i'll butt in briefly as i recognise the name of that burner only too well - it may well be worth having a read thru this epic - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/179003

it sounds like you've had good luck with your drive but thought it would still be worth a heads up..

creaky beat me to that thread! You are a very few lucky phillips 8631 owners. I've referred a slew of those owners to that thread because of many problems.

Booktyping is the altering of the plus format only media and turning it to dvd-rom,the more universal format for all dvd drives to play.This booktyping fools those players into playing your backups.It works exceptionally for me.But I did have a crappy I/O magic with booktyping capability and those booktyped backups totally sucked a**.

Booktyping is no major deal for someone who plays their backups in a couple stand alones. When you play them in around 30+ standalones/ps2s/and pc drives,then you can tell a big difference.A higher percentage of those drives will recognize your backups.It actually give you a third format to choose.

I don't know if phillips has that capability,but maybe it does?
Some drive automatically booktypes,some you set programs like Nero and DVD Decrypter,and others like lite-on have their own utility to download for this.

I love those fuji +8x r's that code as Yuden000-T02. Those TDK plus's I see too many cmags on their list of MID codes to mess around with.

Hello creaky. I'm only about 600 meters from staples if I drew a straight line through Super Walmart! Now Office depot is about 40 mins so I wait for the really good sales.Best buy is about 50 mins away and I'm not sure where that nearest bestbuy is since I did move a little closer to it. Gasoline is dropping,but hanging around 2 and a half bucks a gallon. One of these days I'll cruise on over to BestBuy.They've got a nice reservoir in that same city with lots of walleye! I'll definitely have to get my boat on that water.

Saugmon, I guess I am one of the fortunate ones. Since I got the computer a year ago, I've made over 1500 dvd burns with none of the problems some of the others had from the thread you linked me too! I guess everyone and every brand has there problems. Mine works flawlessly everytime as I burn with Nero after using Shrink and/or Decrypter as needed to backup and copy those dvds!
At this point and with so many burns, I'm just wondering how long the burner can hold out meaning how many burns can I do before something goes up! No one can seem to ever answer that question!
For the time being, I'm happy with my philips burner and the 8400!
As for the booktyping, I'll choose to leave it as is! everyone is happy and playing the DVD+R's. I just hope the TY +R's are just as compatible and/or I find some Fuji's made in Japan! Thanks again for all the help!

@saugmon

You poor saugmon... that is pretty far hehehe. Anyways, both Best Buy and Circuit City for me is roughly 12 miles, K-Mart is 10 miles, Wal-Mart is 2 1/2 miles, Office Depot is 17 miles, Sams Club is 18 miles and Super Target is only 1 mile (yep... super close to me).

Alkyhol,you are smack dab in the middle of all those great stores!

Kenkell: 1500 burns is about what I have including many +rws that have been erased well over a dozen times and a lot of on the fly backups.She still burns over 99% success rate and well over 95% stand alone compatability rate. I did order a benq 1640 at newegg during their weekend special for $38 including UPS shipping!

I've got my other pc to put back together and that original benq 1620 will go right back where it came from! Very sweet burners,just hope the 1640 performs just a well.
