I have been having the problem where I get a lot of bad sectors when burning a disc. I have read that I should turn the burning speed down and nero and possible change the CMC's to 4200 or 4300. Could someone step me through the process of changing these. I've changed the setting in nero to 2x burn rate but it never sticks and still burns my dvd's at 8x. Thanks for the help everyone.
If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.
Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4300MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Thanks that helped me with the DVD Shrink part now how do I change the burn speed in Nero. When ever I change it it pops right back to maximum. I am using Maxell right now but plan on switching.
When I open Nero it gives me the option of what kind of DVD I want to make. I select DVD video label my DVD and select write 2x. I then put all the files into the proper folders and select the burn DVD icon. The first screen then comes up again where I can enter a label and write speed. I select 2x again and select burn and it always starts writing at 4x. Thanks again for helping out.

Maxell is generally very good media. I have burned over 100 with no coasters at all. Is your burner firmware up to date? This could cause a burn issue if it is not.
