Well, my PS2 laser died from excessive use of DVD-R or DVD+R backups, I'm guessing, and now I'm wondering if there is really anything I can do with it, like if there is a way I can set up HDAdvance that doesn't need to use the drive to boot, or anything else? ^^ any help or advice at all would be appreciated, thank you very much! <3

You can always get a new laser from many web sites. What version is your PS2?

XD yeah i know thats an option, but crap, im no good with technical stuff...its a v10, and im really too afraid to mess with anything that needs me to do something with tiny details, all i want to know is if there was some sort of way i can still use it despite the lack of laser...
thanks for your reply though very much ^^
oh, and a side note is i have a broken v1 PS2, but the laser should work, does anyone have any knowledge as to if the v1 laser can be used with my v10 ps2?

Lol, there are services to repair it though ^_^
I dunno if there is a way to boot up HDA without the laser on an unmodded PS2. I know there are ways with a mod though.
I have no idea about the V1 laser, I don't think it can work because of the main board differences, but I could be wrong.

No idea about that. Teammodders.com is an excellent repair/mod site. I'm not sure they repair v.1's though. Are you positive you have a version 1? Version 1-3 PS2's aren't supposed to load backups very well, if at all. Check here to verify what v. PS2 you have: http://www.chipzone.com/versions.cfm

well, the v1 never got modded, it just broke because my sister is a clumsy bitch and dropped it twice
i guess if thats my only option to send it, ill try and google some sites to see, but i dunno if i really can trust some untrustable company with my ps2 ^^; but at least I know what my options are now...
XD ty so much for the replies...all i guess I could really use now is some reputable places I can send it to ^_^(\

So how did you load your backups? You must've used Swap Magic, a modchip, MC exploit, HD loader, gameshark, or ARMAX. Check that link and double check which version you have. For repair and/or new laser purposes you HAVE to know which version PS2 you have. What happens when you try to load a game? Be specific.

You can use the v1 laser on your v10. but you will need a way to get lenschanger started(search the forum about "exploit"). but remember you'll need to replace the dvd-drive (by removing the four screws inside the drive. hope this will help you!

Well this whole thing just doesn't add up to me. I just paid for my PS2 to be modded with a DMS 4 Pro. I was told by a professional modder that they do not work on v.1-3 PS2's because there laser has extreme difficulty reading backups. That's why I'm skeptical that Rvia has a v.1 PS2. As far as v.1 laser working on a v.10, doesn't sound likely, but I certainly don't know for sure.

the Laser in a v1-3 could be a 400A/400B, you can calibrate the laser for an optimal laserlight. there is also an other way to get your v10 laser(only 400C). desolder both laserdiodes' and solder the 400A/B to your 400C. but you will need to calibrate it. do not go less then 800ohms

btw you will need a romeomod on your V10 or the laser will die again in a short period. you will need this for sure if you don't know what brands of dvd+r1/-r you should use. if you use "Maxell DVD-R 4x" (inside green dvdcase). this is because the DVD-R doesn't give stress on the laser and it works like original games or even better.

Okay, sorry its confusing Tokijin, maybe I didn't make myself clear enoughs x.x I am 100% sure its a v1 and I used a guide previously to verify that, but I never loaded any backups on the v1...I only loaded backups on my v10 that I have, which is the one the laser died on XD my v1 PS2 i just consider as my spare parts
Well, at least I know its not impossible to use my v1 laser, which is really what I wanted to know since there isnt any HD options without reading a disc ^^ ill ask one of my boyfriends if he can manage to do some of this stuff, cuz im very unskilled and crap when it comes to tiny details XD
Oh, and I am pretty sure the laser is dead XD when I place any type of game in the drive, all it does is spin, spin, spin, spin, spin, and then it gives up after 3 minutes ^^; early in my back-up streak (3 months) I used +Rs for my burns, which I'm sure ended its life because it seemed the games ran a lot smoother using +R than using -R...bad idea, I guess XD
once again, thanks for your help and advice guys, its really appreciated knowing i dun have to go spend $100 on a new PS2 XD

My Laser I think has died on my PS2 also.. It can read CD based games and Backups though just won't read the DVD's anymore.. I've tried the laser adjustment.. Didn't work... So i'm assuming it's the laser is partly gone.. It's a Ver 4 GT3 Edition ...
I know there is a guy around here that fixes PS2's and resells them.
How much is a good deal for a new laser installed? compared to getting a used PS2 and just reinstalling my HD and Fliptop?
Sucky part is I just installed the HD and HDLoader and that's when the drive decided to go...

You can always stick the HD in your PC and transfer games through WinHIIP until you get a new one for now, but that's up to you of course.

A new laser would cost you around $50. With installation it could run you anywhere from $85-100. I'll PM you the email address of a good mod/repair guy. Can you run HD advance off your PS2 HD? If so you wouldn't need the laser anyway. Then you wouldn't need to use your laser. You may want to look into a Memory Card exploit, you should be okay as long as your laser can read CD's. With this you could load hdadvance.elf off your MC, and then load games off your HD: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289

Yeah I have HD Loader running off my MC right now so I just used Winhip to install the games onto the HD...
I'm going to check with the local guy I've seen around here and see what he can offer me.. I know he fixes alot of PS2's and other consoles so he may have a laser sitting around that isn't being used ...
Like someone else said if it's going to cost $85-$100 to fix might as well get another PS2 or a bigger Hard Drive for it for that matter... :)
Thanks for the info though I greatly appreciate it

If you're not sure what your doing check out teammodders.com. DO NOT buy a new laser off ebay.
