Do either of these brands provide good quality for burned dvds? I have been having problems with burned dvds freezing up and do not know if the brands could be my problem. Any other suggestions for brands and solutions to my problems? Extreme newbie here. Thanks

Maxell MADE IN JAPAN are OK (my burner doesn't like 'em). HP are total GARBAGE. If you have a Best Buy in your area, I'd suggest the FUJI+R's that are on sale $10/25pk(make sure you get MADE IN JAPAN) they will code out as YUDENT002's....the absolute best!

Also make sure you burn @ 4x and NO MULTITASKING during the burn process!

2.4 Celeron;512k ram; 80gig HD; 60gig HD; Windows XP(SP1).
Sony DRU-710A (BYX4)
DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter.
TYG02;YUDEN002;MCC blanks.
Favorite Media: Sony 8x+R(MADE IN JAPAN)

Laptop: 1.4 Ghz;256k ram; 40 gig HD;Windows XP
NEC ND-6650A Burner

So doing anything on the computer at the same time as burning a DVD will hinder the quality and could cause it to freeze up while playing? Thanks

I'd use the maxells over HP anyday. HP uses some poor quality manufacturers like cmags and that will difinitely contribute to playback problems. Do just like akyllonen posted. Get the maxell/fuji/or sony that have spindles on labels saying Made in Japan. This should yield the high quality media like taiyo yuden and hitachi.Genuine taiyo yuden and Verbatim data life plus are some of the finest media.

Freezing up:

Poor quality media
Burning too fast
Multi-tasking
Dirty lens on stand alones.
Too large backup targer-burning to the edge
Fragmented hard drive

First thing, media quality needs addressed. Switch to quality media to see if that takes care of your issue.Keep burn at 4x and a backup target of 4360 mbs to keep the burn from reaching the edge. And no multi-tasking during any of the backup process.Shut off all background programs.

Next,if the quality media doesn't take care of it: Verify in other stand alones and also verify in the pc using the DVD-RW drive that burned that problematic backup.View that area of the problematic disc for those drives to verify.Maybe one certain player has trouble and may need a thorough cleaning or replacement. The more drives you can test them on,the better.
