I just bought a 15 pack of Memorex DL media from BB.I have burned about a dozen or so movies onto Verbatim's DL, and they are great. They burn over 4x's. Im using VSO Inspector to check my burns and having great success so far with the Memorex. The downfall about the Memorex(Ritek) is it only burns at 2.4 whereas the Verbatim were rated at 2.4 but burned higher.

Are people having problems with the Ritek DL because of their burners, or do the Ritek just flat out suck. I have the NEC 3520. Iv only burned 5 but having just .005% bad scans.

Memorex works, but it does not have a long life. I would stick with the Verbatim.

@ hugobone hi :)
why the need to over burn? it only increases the chance of errors
if the memorex id as RITEKD01 these are top class media, i use nothing else but RITEK as in my sig below
if you have had no coasters and they are flawless burns, i don't see how you can say they "suck" unless you rate your media as good or bad by the amount of overburn you can get
@philipman hi :)
memorex buy from various manufactuers. cmc being the worst with a very short shelf life .i would suggest that you don't lump RITEK into the same catagory as that utter trash

How do you tell what company made your discs? I bought a pack of 16x DVD+R Memorexs, but threw away the little wrapper that comes with it. Is there a tiny model number or something on the disc?

You need to use a program such as one of the following ..
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

You can even use DVD Decrypter

Memorex is notorious for using cmags on majority of the single layer media. This is a low quality manufacturer called c magnetics corporation. But there are even worse manufacturers out there than cmags.Verbatim does make some of memorex media, but very difficult to find out until you open them up.Prodisc is another not so great manufacturer for memosux media. That's why it is advised to stay away from. I can get ty and ritek media for a lot cheaper than memosux when it goes on sale.

I have no trouble burning cmags.I keep the burn speed slow and at a reduced backup target. Some of the stand alones I play them on do have a harder time playing the few cmags that I have burned.

Verbatim Dual layer media is top notch. It's the only brand of DL that I will purchase.

The memorex dual layer media is made by phillips and ritek. The phillips would be the worse manufacturer of the 2. I've been reading some posts on sony drives not recognizing the ritek dl media and firmware updates are unsuccessful. It's only a matter of time till cmag starts putting out dl media, and let's hope it is a long time, LOL

Well, I'm glad I didnt get the worst possible media ;) When I run out, I plan on buying some good meedia; I've already experienced some skipping when playing them. Is buying media from a company like Verbatim online a bad idea? Newegg have some good prices :)

I'd go to Supermediastore.com, rima.com or meritline.com. They have huge sales everyonce in a while. If you buy media from a good reputable dealer then you shouldn't have a prob, so no it's not really bad idea. I would worry more about buying fake Taiyo Yuden b/c alot of ppl make fake TYs. BUT all the dealers above are certified TY dealers (I think, I know Supermediastore is for a fact, but not others)

CMC Magnetics Corporation is already manufacturing DL media. Datawrite Printable 2.4x +R DL are coded CMC Mag D01 and Memorex 4x -R DL are coded CMC Mag AD4

Just something else to avoid

@hugabone

Why even bother with that low crap Memorex when you have the top notch Verbatim 2.4X or 4X DVD+R DL (Dics ID: MKM-001-00 "Made In Singapore")?

we do indeed hate CMC. as i say i see so many problems caused by this 'media' on a daily basic and i analyse logfiles and nearly always, when all the tweaks have been made/suggestions followed, it's CMC left standing there looking sheepish

Sorry guys.... I didn't mean to hijacked this thread, but I just want to say hi to Doc and Creaky that's all.

Hey Doc,

So how's your book typing when you're burning with DVD Decrypter? Mine is good so far, oh and the 710A just got a new firmware BYX5, if only you didn't know. Anyways, I just did another test with (Change for: DVD+R/DVD+R DL) and it successfully changed to DVD-ROM using our famous 8X TY DVD+R media. I've replied to this thread, I put some goody goody pictures just for fun. Here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/248835 enjoyed it!!

LOL, another belly buster :

In that case Memorex CMC mags are the next thing I would look out for, especially sincethe next preferred "Reputed" brands like Verbatims are going in for Ritek, and I can confidently say that Riteks are definitely worse than CMC mag. I dont know what others think!
LOL

well, if i were a member over there, and i know i would get absolutely NO RESPECT even opening my mouth, the comment about the "Riteks are definitely worse than CMC mag"...OMG, HAHHAHAHAHA, that's what i think! :)

now alan1476, who is a cd freaks die hard, HE has the RIGHT IDEA:

With the prices of media getting cheaper and cheaper, example Taiyo Yuden 8xdash media from Rima at 32.00 per 100 why would you buy anything else, unless you ran out and had to have a disc right now. I have learned my lesson. Its Taiyo Yuden with Verbatim coming in a close second. Nothing else.
now THAT is a guy who KNOWS what's up~ :)

You realize that people DO have the right to their own opinions, right or wrong. And it's just possible that, with certain PC configurations and stand alone players, a degree of success may just be achieved using CMC Mag Corp produced media. Also, it may be safe to assume that in time, even CMC Mag Corp may improve their product to an acceptable standard. This be said, having been 'burned' several times in the past by inferior media, why take a chance .. Stick with what you're comfortable (and successful) with whatever it may be. Personally, I'll NEVER EVER BUY MEMOREX AGAIN, but I will stop flameing the peeps that choose to .. after all, somebody is feeding their family off of Memorex money and I detest people that make kids hungry ...

nicely stated catfreak...i will have to agree 100% :)

i realize EVERYONE is entitled to their OWN opinions regarding their success with THEIR own setups/standalones, i can never argue something with someone that DOES have success with CMC MAG, i just never did, hence, i'm stating MY OWN opinion on the matter~ :)

i will NEVER, knowingly, BUY CMC MAG manufactured discs again for the rest of my life, but, hey...all the power to those that DO have success with CMC MAGs, i for one, have had ZERO~ :)

which reminds me, im starving right now~! can u detest the people that make ME hungry too catfreak? that would be very nice of u~ :P i agree with your comment completely...i'm the head of the pediatric neurology dept. now at my hospital, i help kids EVERY DAY, it's so sad to see them suffering, let alone, hungry :(

What gets me irked about memorex media,it's not the cmags, but the price you pay for cmags while they are on sale versus Sony/Fuji/Maxell. The on sale prices are usually the same or pretty close for any of those brand names.
Why pay 30 cents for cmags when I can get the fuji tys for the same on sale price? I can even find the Ritek-r03 for under 25 cents each!

I've never seen memorex any cheaper than $15 for a spindle of 50.

If you are ok using cmag media, keep a look out at staples for their teon sales.I haven't seen any for a while, but you can usually get a 20 pack spindle for $5 or 40 pack spindle for under $8 and you are guaranteed cmags at the worst, but may get lucky with ricohs on the 20 pack spindles of +8x.
