This probably isn't the appopriate forum or spot to be posting this but I know there are some top notch folk here that know a thing or two about automotive so bear with me and I apologize if anybody feels I am out of line.

I have an 88 olds cutlus calais with the 2.3 ltr 4 banger that was running just fine and then died like I turned the key off. I don't have a scanner but jumped pins A and B and by counting the flashes of the check engine light I get a code of 12. I put a new ECM in this thing about a year ago. I don't mess with, have much knowledge or tooledge to work on the computer controlled vehicles. I used to be shop foreman for a cummins diesel engine distributor/repair shop and then again at a privately owned truck line so I do have sufficient mechanical background.

Could anybody give me a place to start looking for the problem. I haven't had a chance to check the fuse panel yet. The engine cranks fine but doesn't even try to fire. I was thinking maybe fuel pump or ECM but like I said don't know much about computer controlled cars. BTW I'm disabled now and can't do to much but can probably check the simple things. Thanks.

Mort

so did you get it figured out then?
that username and password should work, unless one of us at work are using it the same time you try to log in, then it won't let you log in.

Nothing for certain yet. The username and password you gave me did work. Thanks a bunch. I was unable to check for spark because I don't have the special spark plug extension wire to plug into the coil and module assy required for testing and didn't want to chance shorting out one of the coils but I'm fairly sure it doesn't have any spark. It does have fuel in the injector manifold. I did ohm out the crankshaft position sensor and it was within specs. Due to the deal with the coolant fan running also, I'm going to try a new ECM. My step dad works at napa and can get me one at his cost. If that doesn't fix me up, it's going to the shop and I'll just have to pay the big bucks. Thanks for everything and I'll let ya know the outcome.

a test light will work, so will a screw driver in the plug boot, just ground it and check for spark, if none present, possible ignition module failure. either way, let me know.

I got my old jalopy going again. I was almost ready to take it to a mech but got the problem figured out and repaired. It had a defective ignition module. Thanks.

I got the part from auto zone. It has a lifetime warranty. If it doesn't last it's easy to get to. I've had plenty of experience on preelectronic gasoline engines and electronic diesel engines in class 8 trucks but quit messing with car engines when they became computerized. Didn't have the toolage and since I was shop foreman for two truck shops never had the need or want to buy the tools or get into cars. Toolage to work on class 8 trucks and diesel engines (electronic and mechanical) cost plenty alone. Thanks again for your help gear.

I'm giving you recognition for helping me solve the problem. If you feel this isn't sufficient we can make other arrangements to your satisfaction.

@ Mort81, I hear you with all this computerised stuff, I was trained on engines (Diesel, biggest was 57l, and petrol, not these billion litre monsters that Americans have!) that you could work on, before all this computerised skullduggery took off.
