My desk top blew up so I am forced to use my laptop and need an external dvd+-r drive and wondered if the Lite On SOHW-1673SX DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner was any good...And if it worked with shrink. I only have experience with internal for dvd back ups. Any input would be greatly appreciated

To have a successful dvd burn requires your complete system to work together as you probably know. here are a few things to check.

1. Processor speed--I've seen posts with members using a 500mb CPU but your time will be excessive. The faster the better.

2. RAM should be at least 512mb.

3. HD free space---10 gig may work, better with 12 or 15 gig.

4. USB port has to be USB 2 not USB 1.

Those are some of the basic things to check. The Lite on drives I have read good and bad reports on. Those that have a good one say they are great, those that have trouble with Lite on hate them. Thats commom with everything you buy. My choice in drives if you can find one would be Plextor or Pioneer in that order.

Shrink will work if the system is up to it.

Jerry

@Actnup

Like Jerry746 said, the operation will depend on your laptop. Shrink will shrink regardless, how long it takes will depend on your system parameters.

Shrink will not effect the burner you choose at all. Why don't you list your system specs for your laptop and we can get a better feel for the performance you should expect.

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz w/ 640 ram. I really wasn't worried about the laptop's performance, I just remembered when I first started doing back-ups there was talk of external burners not working with certain programs. I started with DVD X Copy and it was so pickie about things I just wanted to make sure about the drive before I dropped the cash. Trying to replace my desktop and all.

The DVD X Copy programs were always picky about what you used and what you had on your system. With the PC specs your laptop has I doubt you will have a problem, but not everything is written in stone if you know what I mean. Always a slight possibility of a problem but they can be worked out. If your laptop sees the external drive on first hookup it should be good to go. Let us know how it works out. Good luck.
