Ripping my DVD's to play on my Creative Zen PMC

I am a novice and recently received a Creative PMC from my daughter. I would like to rip my DVD's to play on my PMC or with windows media 10.
Various folks that I ask state that just inserting the DVD and hitting Sync will do the job...that has not been true. I'm looking for a good software that will do the following,
Rip my DVD to my PMC or hard drive.
Allow me to back up the ripped version.

you need to find out what kind of formats it supports.. then you can find how to encode it
