OK, I'm sick of messing with my Sony DL burner. I'm just going to buy a new burner. My question for you pro's is which one? I was eyeballing the LITE-ON SOHW-1693S on newegg and it seems decent. My only requirements are that it be capable of DVD+R DL burning and it must support booktyping either through DVD Decrypter or a readily available utility. Please feel free to offer your thoughts and share good experiences with burners that work for you.
Regards,

Using a Pioneer AO8 here for DL burning and have had no problems. Now, I think its up to AO10. Also, have a Pioneer AO6 that has worked great for 2 years (not DL though). I have read that BenQ and Lite-on are very good but have no experience with them.

What model is your Sony? It is highly likely that it is a rebadged LiteOn... Try updating your firmware and see if that helps...

I'd suggest Plextor. Bought one for a Sony computer I had (when the Pioneer wouldn't fit) & have been happy ever since.
The Plextor 716-A just got moved to a homebuilt 3.4ghx P4 I built last week. Love that burner!!!

Do the LG's and Plextors support bit setting and, if so, what models do you guys recommend?

tewlbocks,
If I were you I will select benq 1640, becos as far as you can read in this forum benq is the most economical and most reliable dvd writer.
I have read some guys were having problems with Lite-on, LG, and pioneer and plextors and the worst hit is plextors and Lite-on.
I have a Sony DL Burner sometimes back and it created a lot of problems for me so I change to benq.
The benq dvd writer once you have the latest firmware you are automatically booktype to dvd-rom.
The benq dvd writer 1620 that I were using never give me any problems.

Best bang for the buck is the benq DW1640. Very dependable, not finicky about media, supports bitsetting. The retail vs should come with the benq booktype management utility on cd-rom but you can also dl it from benq for free if it doesn't or if you buy an oem drive.

What kind of problems have Plexter users had lately? I've had mine about 8 months now. I've applied every firmware update & the only problem I had was DMA got turned off (I don't know why) during the last firmware update. I turned it back on & the Plextor works great.
