Can i use my hard drive from my old computer in my ps2 to put my game saves on, etc...? if so could you tell me how to do it and if any special software is needed.

As long as it is compatible yes, it should work

and i think you need HD Loader to use it.
Also a network adapter

ok, so i would format my hard drive and get a network adapter 30 bucks. how would i hook it up to the network adapter? do i need any special cables or the ones that are normally used in my computer? I dont have to hook up the network adapter do i, all i have is dial-up? What is the difference between hd loader and hd advance? Will i be able to save/load directly to/from the hard drive or do i have to go from memory card then the hard drive vice-versa?

I don't think you can save games on the hard drive instead of the memory card.
