Hi people ( Car.Mike) I followed "Car.Mikes" format in using "DVD Decrypter" and ALMOST worked but - again - no cigar... For some unknown reason everytime I try using "DVD Decrypter" it Always portrays my movie as being too large to burn? This has happened about 6 times - always the same results - too big. My movie, this time, is 80 min long. The source on the Decrypter reads it's size as 6,395,617,280 bytes, Sectors - 3,122,860. (Mode1/2048). There is less than 3,000,000 sectors on a plain disc. I am doing something wrong to get a large reading for the size of my movie - again. "Car.Mike", I thought we had it this last time - so close but the blurb said "that there isn't enough space on my target disc, would I like to try anyway". I did and it crashed my machine? I have great success with "DVD Shrink" but not all the time.. any suggestions on this size thing? Thanks ronnies

delete some stuff on your hard drive. Run a windows search, and search for any files that are over "200,000 KB" (or whatever number you want), the results of the search will show you where the files are located. You can delete the files straight from the search results window.

Hello "temj"
The space that I was refering to was the space on the blank discs not my Hard drive. I have 38gigs remaining on my hard drive. "Dvd Decrypter" stated that my blank disc didn't have enough space to hold the movie that I was trying to backup. "Dvd Decrypter always ( for me) seems to state that the movies that I am backing up are 25% too large for my blank disc and that's NOT right. I must set something wrong on the "Dvd Decryter" setup? Don't know, it has happened to 6 movie backup attempts through the "Decrypter". Thanks for your kind reply - ronnies

Are you running them through DVD Shrink before you try to burn them with DVD Decrypter?

Hello temj. Thanks for your prompt reply. NO, I am going to the "Mode" menu on "Dvd Decrypter" and then to "Iso" to "Read".I then put my DVD Movie in the Dvd Drive, I notice where "Dvd Decrypter" is going to locate the file. I then click the big "Decrypt" button. When it finishes I remove the movies disc from the Dvd Drive. I then go to "Mode" then select "Iso" - "Write". I then click the "Browse for source file" button and select the movie mds. I then click the big "Write" button. AND then DVD Decrypter tells me that my movies file is too large for the blank disc?????
HERE is my problem - it isn't.. My movies is 80 minutes long and is 3849mb - below the 4200max for a blank disc.. Well "temj" that's the run through? Any suggestions on why is reads that my movies is too large? Thanks for your indulgence ronnies

@ronnies, just a quick thought...the reason I use the ISO method is that I realize either the disk is another back-up (already compressed) or it is single layer...or unless you use Dvd 9 (DL)...which I use for all DL's and will have them booktyped to Dvd-Rom. I also set the target size to 4400.

Hello moviedud. How do I know if my movie is a "DVD 9" or a "DVD 5"?
Where on what program can I set the target size to 4400? Is this set on "DVD Decrypter" or "DVD Shrink"?
You speak of items that I am not aware of ie: you say you use DVD 9, can I make a DVD 9 out of a "DVD 5"? What purpose does that serve?
I've got a lot to learn... Lots of questions, answer only if you have the time, Iknow this is a burden for someone who knows this stuff... Thanks for your time - ronnies

Hello Ronnies,
A DVD9 is a Dual Layer disc that holds 8.5Gb instead of the 4.5Gb on a single layer disc aka DVD5. On DVD Shrink you can set the target size under dvd type (going from memory as i am at work and don't have these progs handy) and the dropdown menu has a custom target size and that is where you can put in your value. The recommended target size is 4300 for shrink as it keeps you from using the edge of the disc (where crappy media has poor media coverage). If you are using good disc ie Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims, you can bring that target size up a little to 4400 or so. I think decrypter has a target size setting for when it burns, but i can't remember exactly where it is located, probably under "settings".
Looking at your problem, length of time used for movies has no direct bearing on the file size. It depends more on the bit rate of the original movie. But you state you have a file size of
Quote:
The source on the Decrypter reads it's size as 6,395,617,280 bytes,
that is why decrypter is not letting you back it up directly to a DVD5. The file needs to be shrunk in DVD Shrink to go down to 4,300,000,000 bytes or so. I think that is why MovieDud said you could use a DL (8.5gb). What does windows explorer say your file size is? I don't think decrypter is reading the file size as too big on its own. If i have a movie 2 hrs long in standard play, it will take up a DVD5. Take the same movie and record it in XP mode, and only 1 hr will fit on a DVD5. Take 4 hours of movies saved in LP mode, and the 4 hours will fit on a DVD5 because it is going at a lower bit rate. Most store bought movies are on a DVD9 or DL disc that holds 8.5gb. That is when we use DVD Shrink to take that DVD9 down to a DVD5 size disc by compression. If you open up a movie in Decyrpter file mode, and the total size of the files is greater than 4.5 gb (the disc must be a DVD9), you have to shrink the files before you try to back them up to a DVD5 (4.5gb). DVD Shrink is available here for free. Just look under the software tab above under DVD Rippers.
Hope that cleared things up somewhat. If i were at home, i would have been able to use screen captures to show you the settings exactly. Good luck, and post again if you still have problems.

Hello Maxburn and 9mmruger: Tons of thanks for your very definitive explanation of DVD 5 & DVD 9. I believe you are telling me to FIRST run my movies thru "DVD Shrink" ( to shrink the movie down) AND THEN thru "DVD Decrypter? I didn't think that I could do this. "DVD Shrink" wants to act on it's own and that's it, can't transfer into "DVD Decrypter". I don't even think I'm making sense by saying that? Most times "DVD Shrink" works fine, not familiar with settings where I can set either program to encompass larger movies. As I stated prior "DVD Decrypter", for me, has never worked, it ALWAYS tells me that my movies is too long to run? If this is the case, why does anyone even try to decrypt anything if it is always too long? Guys, I got to have some bad thinking - on my part here - "DVD Decrypter" is supposed to "Decrypt" and I don't see how anyone can fit a movie on it to start with??? Help ronnies

Hi Ronnies,
I will try to explain it better. DVD Decrypter does many things, one of them being decrypting the movie. Here is one way to take a movie that is a DVD9 and make it fit on a DVD5. Put movie in drive, and open DVD Decrypter in File mode. Extract movie files to HD. Then open DVD Shrink under open files tab and go to the location Decrypter extracted your files to. Shrink will then analyze the files and display the DVD's structure. 9mmruger1 has this guide in his sig line. Bbmayo has some great guides on using Shrink and decrypter:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html
Dvd Decrypter will work on movies that will fit on a DVD5 without shrinking and you just do an iso read/write operation for that. The size of the original movie has to be 4.5 gigs or less for straight copies. There are other programs that shrink DVD9s, Nero Recode2 is one of them that is a good program also. Once you get past the basics, ripping movies can be easy. Just read up as much as you can using the guides. Every question you have, is probably covered in detail in these guides. AD has a decent guide also:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shr...
If you go to experimenting, i would suggest you use a DVD+RW until you get the hang of it. That way you don't make a coaster, you just reformat the DVD+RW and try again. Good luck, the more you read, the more you learn.
