In a nut shell, I want to take all the "movies" from a DVD (meaning the main movie, featurettes, making of's, etc) and rip or transcode them to a hard drive for playback on a Windows Media Extender at 1:1 quality. EVERYTHING I read about has to do with compression, trasnfer to CDR/DVDR, etc. I just want to pull the files off the DVD to a hard drive and play them back on Windows XP MCE or a MCE Extender at the same quality as my DVD player, which is a bit rate of about 5000 Kbits I believe? Please correct me if I'm wrong about anything or pointed in the wrond direction!

Here is my simple criteria:

1. Maintain DVD level quality. No pixelation beyond what you'd see in a standalone DVD player/TV setup. I'm not shooting for perfection just good quality.

2. File size no bigger than DVD (approx 8-9GB for all extracted files from a DVD max) and I'm assuming 5000Kbits is adequate to maintain quality leaving me with about a 4-5GB file for a 2 hour movie.

3. Must be mpeg2 or avi/wmv file type, though NOT DivX. MCE Extender will not play DivX. Can this be hacked to allow this?

4. I have a 500GB USB2 Drive so space is not a concern right now (and if I can get this to work, it's worth it to me buy another!).

Is there a way to just copy the source files from a DVD to a hard drive and convert them... maybe even just changing the file extension from VOB to AVI or MPG? I don't want to transcode if i don't have to!

I'm using Magic DVD Ripper, which does a fabulous job ripping my kids DVD's as SVHS quality which is great for all my Disney DVD's and file size, but not adequate quality to me to rip movies such as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc. I tried using Magic DVD Ripper set at 5000Kbits, but it ends up terminating at about 1:28 into any movie, no matter the movie, and it's avi only rips as DivX.

Lastly, is there any web sites/resources anyone knows of geared towards this type of ripping? With a Terabyte of storage under $800, I can't help but thisk this would be a more common type of question!

TIA!

~Michael

Ok first off, lets make somethings clear mate, there is no easy to rip the menu, the movie, the subtitles, the extras etc to mpeg. In all actuality im not even sure if its possible though ive been around the dvd ripping scene etc for a few years now. For now, lets say, it ISNT possible. If you wanna keep the menus, all the extras etc there are only two options, either you do it the simple way and use a free dvd ripping program like DVD Decrypter which is one of the older dvd rippers out there and is probably one of the best, ive never had a problem with it. Rip everything to your hard drive and boom your set. The whole point to a ripper anyway is simply to decrypt the VOB files off the dvd itself because everything on a dvd is encrypted so you cant simply copy everything off the disk. Ok, thats first option. The second would be to use ratDVD which is the ONLY program out there that allows you to take an entire dvd and shrink it to a 3rd of its size keeping everything, and thne allowing you to convert it back to VOB with close to perfect quality. Unfortuantly however as your using an extender it probably wont be able to read the ratDVD format so..I guess thats out of the picture. For myself, i use a program called 1Click Dvd Copy and a program called DVD Region+CSS Region which runs in the backround and "decrypts" while the 1Click copies it to the hard drive. 1Click allows you to keep everything though i dont usualy but it gives the best compression ratio and ultimate quality in the end compared to many other encoders. Ive compared it to dvdshrink for instance and it gives a 2-3 percent icrease in compression and creates sharper picture quality then dvdshrink. But anyway, if you wanted just the movie you could rip the movie+ac3 5.1 audio to your hard drive with a ripper and use a program like TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress which can read from the ripped files to convert it to a mpg. In this case you could have a nice high bitrate with awesome quality under 4 gig easily. How in your case, you will have to sacrifce something. Either give up mpeg and stick with VOB or, give up the extras and go with mpeg. Your choice ;-) Sorry for the rambling by the way, just wanted to give you your options.

Sorry, to clarify what I said in the beginning, you can convert the extras, etc to mpeg if you convert each of the video's etc separatly into individual mpegs. However im sure thats not what you want. So, if you dont wanna have a bunch of separate mpegs, stick with just VOB or dump the extras and keep mpeg

I should clarify as well. The only thing I really want is the main movie and maybe some of the featurettes (like a making of). But it's OK if they are simply stand alone files.

What I don't want is the menus or anything like that. I don't need them.

Very simply, I would just like to rip the main movie(s), into AVI or mpg at the same bit rate or so as the dvd. That's it.

Is DVD Decrypter the best for ripping movies at a high bit rate and that's it? If so, is there a guide specificaly for it that is taylored to ripping high bit rates and optimum settings to do so? Are there any good sites or info focusing on high bit rates and where the sweet spots are where beyond a certain point you just get file bloat because of the limitations of the transfer mechanism (100/1000 MBit network) and playback device such as the video monitor?

Thank you thedreamer for the suggestions. great starting points!

np mate :) So ok, you just want the movie and mabye an extra or two, thats fine. So, the question is, would you prefer avi or mpeg? As for dvd dycrpter, there isnt a question about bitrate because what it simply does is rips all the vobs, infos etc on the dvd, decrypts them and puts them on your computer. If its a dual layered dvd which many dvds nowadays are, the total folder size after a complete rip which will usually be 15-20-30 minutes depending on comp speed, ram, processor etc will be about 7-8 gigs. The entire movie with menus etc are in those vob files and so the bitrate isnt affected when you rip/decrypt. Now, to give u a brief understanding of mpegs, you can generally take a dvd thats about an hour and a half and convert it to a svcd, resolution (480x480) 29.97 fps, bitrate=2520, two cds, audio=224 kbs and the quality will be almost imcomparable to dvd quality. If the movie is longer then of course youd wanna stretch to a 3cd size which would be like 2400 mb to keep the quality. But generally you can keep pretty much all of the quality with svcds as long as u make it 2-3 cds based on the length. And i mean the bitrate will be lower no doubt but the quality wont really be noticable to the human eye, u know? If you want guides, www.vcdhelp.com is probably the best site out there. Its got a huge amount of guides to do every type of conversion one could possibly think of, its got tools, a forum touching base on everything...Its how i learned everything i knw...From searching through forums and following guides and experimenting. Now, if you want to do avi, its going to be a bit more complicated because of the filters you gotta put into place which you dont hve to add in an mpeg. I ususally prefer avi of course cause you can shrink it to a much smaller filesize..but...Mpegs work beautifully. Check out the site and if you need anymore help you can email me. Also, if you need software
;-) I have a nice collection of um...expensive stuff i can send to you :). Hope ive helped mate
