Acceptable compression?

Whats everyones personal cutoff rate for compression? I usually dont do a movie if I cant get it above 60. I tried one at like 50 and it was pretty choppy. Was my old dvd player tho. I got my yamaha now and its amazing:) Can a 50-60 compression movie actually look like hte original?

Well no, a compressed movie can never look like an original. I try to go at 70% but some movies are jsut too big, but I don't care I'll still burn it. But if it's a HUGE problem then just reauthor. Also are you quality enhancement options on? I use the "deep analysis" on any movie with any amount of compression. And the adaptive error compensation? I prefer to use the "Sharp" setting if it's an animation or something like LotR where picture is important. But I use "Smooth" on nearly everything else.

are you using the sliders that are off to the right of dvd shrink? i set my compression thru the preference(settings) menu.you have to select edit at the top of the dvd shrink startup interface.i set my compression to 4000mb(4gb) and i also select the option to take out layer breaks.and that greatly increases the readability of the movie.

I dont really mess with em. just get rid of everything but english 5.1 and the needless stuff. I will check out the suggestions. THX!!!!

Using "Custom Ratio" for the compression is actually the best method, if you just want to use DVD Shrink. In that method, you can actually pick what part of the DVD gets more compression. I usually compress the living heck out of the "Extras" as you only watch them once in a great while. Thus reducing the amount of compression DVD Shrink uses on the main movie and menus. A good standard to go by, is try to stay above %70 on DVD Shrink's slider bar. If you put the slider bar on %70 for the main movie, DVD Shrink will allocate the rest of compression needed to other parts of the DVD (menus, extra, etc.)

messing with those sliders is a mistake.if you have the compression set to 4000mb in the preferences every time you open a dvd or file it will automatically compress to this size the best it can.most movies can be compressed to this level.sin city is one of a few movies that i couldnt compress to this level.

If you don't mess with them then you have your main-movie compression too much. I set my prefs. at 4300, which I think is fine. I agree w/ temj. I usually don't watch the extras every single time I see the movie so it's only logical to compress them more, that and the menu, for movies like LotR.
I'm surprised by your choice in a sig pic sui-cyco, Bad Religion (which I love) has so many cool pics, at their site, at photoshack etc. Why choose such a plain one.

4000mb takes you further away from the edge of the disc which is good to do.the closer to the edge of the disc the harder it is to read.at the same time it isnt too much compression for most movies.sin city didnt even compress to 4gb with it set to 4gb.but most all the movies i backed up fit at or around 4gb and all work great.
ive never been to bad religion site.ive been to the epitaph site.but i like this logo its cool and simple.i might check that site out later though.and bad religion is one of my favorite bands.

Well I wasn't really asking about the 4300, I knowabout that already, but thx anyways. What I really wanted to know was why dont' you touch your sliders on shrink. I think most... you know what jsut read my previous post, too lazy to retype.lol

Heck, I always mess with my sliders on Shrink. I too, adjust the Menus, and Extras down as far as they go, get rid of unwanted sound tracks, get the Maximum out of the movie and burn it that way. Occasionally I'll burn the Movie Only, and once in a while I'll split into 2 discs with CloneDVD2, and lately I burnt a few DL discs, such as the new Batman movie.

its automatic without having to use the sliders if you set it.and like it was said earlier if you move one slider the compression on another slider changes.so adjusting them could be tricky.just try it the next time you backup a movie and youll see what i mean.

I know what you mean. Ecxactly what you mean. I set everything but main movie to custom. Say If you move the slider on "Extras" down then the slider on "main Movie" moves up, raising compression along w/ quality. next time you do it you'll see what I mean.

ive done it both ways.actually i started out by moving the sliders on shrink.but if you arent concerned about the extras then you should just copy the main movie with shrinks re author option and you wont even have to compress the movie at all in most cases.or you could compress the main movie to try and fit 2 or 3 movies on a disc and get a program to make a menu for the movies and consolidate if your a person that doesnt care about extras and just want the movie backed up.but that is a different story all together.
and if you still want the extras then you can do it both ways.but setting it 4000mb is simpler and there isnt much of a quality difference to the untrained eye.

How is setting it at 4000 simpler? Could you explain this to me? I think 4300 is good enough. But if you reauthor you lose the menu. I don't care about the extras cause it's usually a one time watch. and even then it's nothing that need to be in high quality.

Interestig thread. I use the sliders for just about every movie that needs to be compressed to remove the credits at the end of the movie as they are usually given at the beginning of the movie. Seems to raise my compression ratio by a couple of percent every time.
Never tried the custom though. Will have to look into that.

In the past, I've always tried to compress all my dvd collection to fit (about 57%) and it looked fine when I played it. I played it on my 61" screen and couldn't tell much difference. It's also better than any brand new VHS that plays on my 61".
Now, I usually take out extras and credits and just have the main movie. There's still some movies that I still do copy and compress everything because my wife loves watching the end of the movie or the special feature with music video.

if you get a program that makes menus like dvdauthor gui (and there are other free ones too),you could make your own menus and put several movies on one disc just by compressing several main movies and putting them thru the dvd author program and burn to disc.
