I have been reading threads on this forum for over a month and a half and I've learned a LOT. I started backing up DVD's about 8-9 months ago and had nothing but troubles straight from the start. First of all I bought the cheapest DVD burner out there at a rock bottom price at Office Max. I am also one of the people who fell for the top ten DVD burner scams. That left me with DVD Cloner II for $40. I then went straight to Wal Mart and bought 100 of the cheapest DVD R's you could buy (Memorex).

Amazingly enough. It worked for about 3 movies. I thought I had a good cheap system. 5-6 months later I had totally given up on burning DVD's, had successfully burned approximately 40 movies, had spent countless hours trying to get customer support from people who did't speak english, spent more countless hours working on a DVD burner that locked up (hardware that locks up...that's cheap), and had created between 150 & 200 coasters.

My wife nagged me enough to try again. Second time around I was doing my homework. I spent a lot of time on here and got a good majority of my questions answered. I bought a burner from a company that I could trust. Bought Verbatim media instead of the Memorex and downloaded DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and the free version of Any DVD. I've copied a couple dvd's and I had no problems with Bewitched (it looked like it was a good test by all the threads on here).

With all that said, I want to first say thanx for all the advice I've already gotten on here. Secondly I'd like to get a couple of answers to questions I still have.

This is my system > I'm using DVD shrink to move the DVD9 movies to the hard drive and then I use DVD Decrypter to burn them to DVD5. AnyDVD is running in the background but I have no idea if it is really doing anything. DVD shrink does say that there is NO encryption and from what I've read that is what AnyDVD will do for you.

Question 1) Why buy NERO? I understand it's a great tool but from the demo's I've run it doesn't do anything that the freeware programs don't (besides maybe look prettier. Not worth $60).

Question 2) Will DVD Fab Decrypter replace DVD Decrypter in my process? I just downloaded Fab and started looking at it. From what I understand DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink don't get updated anymore but DVD Fab does. Will Fab do the burning part that I'm using DVD Decrypter for now?

Question 3) Can I use DVD Fab to move the movies from DVD9 to the hard drive thus decripting the movie and eliminating the need to use AnyDVD. I don't mind dropping an extra 30 bucks for something I really need but do I really need AnyDVD.

Question 4) Is AnyDVD going to be a more reliable system? I want a system that is going to be darn near full proof so that I can explain it to my wife and she can copy whatever movies she wants backups of (I could care less if we lose Sweet Home Alabama and a few of her other movies so I'd rather let her spend the time copying them.)

Question 5) Who makes these programs? How is it that these incredibly good programs like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are being given away and how is it that DVD Fab Decrypter is being given away AND updated for FREE? Does anybody know where these updates are coming from? Will they continue to come or will I end up having to buy AnyDVD at some point and time anyway? Will one of these days when I open up DVD Fab and it automatically updates a virus be flowing over the line to infect my computer and steal all my information?

All right, that's enough babbling and I'd guess that this is a long enough thread (and then some). Thanx again for all of the help I've already gotten.

Welcome to AD

#1. Nero Recode comes to us by the same dude that gave us DVD Shrink. However, DVD Shrink is a superior compression tool with the deep analysis and [AEC options.

#2. Don't ditch DVD Decrypter just yet...there are still movies out there that it will work on. Also you have the ISO/read/write functionality that neither Fab or Shrink have.

#3. DVD43 is a comprible prog to AnyDVD, but it is free. DVDFav Decrypter can be used only as DVD Decrypter in file mode. But to answer your question you shouldnt need AnyDVD running with Fab, it should work on its own.

#4. Haven't used AnyDVD much, but it runs in the background and you don't even know its there, DVD43 work in the same way and as mentioned above it's free. Either prog can be run behind DVD Shrink to crack just about any movie out there.

#5. DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are now defunct therefore, noone makes them. They will not be upgraded any more. DVDFab Decrypter was offered up after the demise of DVD Decrypter out of the generous hearts of the makers of DVDFab and DVDFab Express, which are not free progs. The updates should keep coming until circumvention of copyrighted material becomes illegal in the country(s) that they operate from. As for the viruses...nothing is guarenteed, get yourself a good virus prog and firewall, and you'll be a protected as anyone.
