I had been using TDK DVD-R since I got a burner and they were awesome then after about the 40th TDK I tried to use they stopped working with my burner.
I found Memorex DVD+R for a good price and bought them hoping my burner would write on them. It did and it seems to be nice so far. I went to play it in my living room in the DVD player and it wouldn't read the disc. My computer and PS2 both played it back.
None of my TDK DVD-R dics ever had issues with DVD players. Do the + not work with more DVD players?

It is just a compatability issue with your set top. It may not like your +R's. You might check your drive to see if you can bitset it for use with the +R's. And get rid of those memosux.

TDK is an average media, but Memorex...?? Oh god, don't tell me that it's CMC MAG again. There are tons and tons of high quality media that's available at your local stores such as the Fuji & Sony (make sure it's Made In Japan), and Maxell (Made In Japan). So why even bother with Memorex? However, the choice is yours to make, it's your money, so it's your call.
My trusted and preferred media are genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (Made In Japan).
Now back to your question -- the reason your DVD player can not play those DVD+R media is that you need to "book type" them (your DVD+Rs) into DVD-ROM, especially if your DVD player is close to 2 years old or older.
I, on the other hand, prefer any Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell DVD+Rs over any DVD-Rs anyday simply because I can book type them into DVD-ROM flawlessly. Therefore, it's super easy on any of my stand alone dvd players to play them.

I'm a newb so could you explain to me what "book type" is.
BTW, I mainly bought the Memorex because I kept getting a "session fixation error" with my TDKs and I wanted to see if it was the media causing the error.
I am taking them back tomorrow and getting my money back (bought them at Staples and they told me if they aren't compatable with my burner they would refund me my money. I will just say they didn't work :) ) and then go to Best Buy and buy the Fuji's that are on sale and make sure they are made in Japan.
The Fuji's made in Japan are TYs correct?

Book type or bitsettings is when you change your DVD+R, DVD+R DL or DVD+RW discs format into DVD-ROM format. This will make your dvd player thinking and or reading as an original pressed DVD-ROM movie. Yes... DVD-ROM is the universal format for all functional dvd players.
However, you'll need a dvd burner that's capable of changing the book type or bitsettings though -- any Sony/Lite-On, BenQ, Nu Tech, Ricoh, Plextor and NEC should be able to change the book type easily.
What kind of programs/applications did you use to do all your dvd burning? Nero and DVD Decrypter can book type easily. In addition, Lite-On has a "Book Type Utility" that can change the book type from a DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW into DVD-ROM as well.
Here http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_utility.asp is the current Lite-On Book Type Utility (version 1.3.5)
Here http://www.k-probe.com/kprobe-bitsetting-booktype.php is the instrucions on how to use the Lite-On Utility.
Here http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php is the instructions on how to "book type" using DVD Decrypter. Remember "DON'T" use the (Change for: Next Write) unless it's a DVD+RW media, but do "USE" the (Change for: drive DVD+R/DVD+R DL Media) and (drive DVD+R/DVD+R DL Media - EEPROM!) only.
((Here's how to book type using Nero Burning Rom))
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every burning using a DVD+R disc your Nero will automatically change the booktype into a DVD-ROM format.
((Here's how to book type using Nero Express))
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then Nero Express
02) now click on "Copy Entire Disc"
03) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK", then "Exit" out. That's it... easy as sipping on some Corona. Again, now every time when you burn, Nero will automatically change your DVD+R into a DVD-ROM in prior to the actual burning process.
Basically, you only need to set the "book type setting" on Nero once. So, if you book type it with Nero Burning Rom already then you don't need to do it again on Nero Express or vice versa.

YES.... that is correct. Any FUJI & SONY DVD+R (Made In Japan) at Best Buy is more than likely to be genuine Taiyo Yuden media.

You don't really need all that stuff, I find that DVDshrink and Nero takes care of most things, I like them b/c I can jsut set it and leave it because of Shrink's option of automatically burning w/ Nero. Of course Shrink stopped updating so some newer protections shrink won't be able to bypass. Yeah your burner's a Samsung. Another thing with buying Fuji, look for made in japan on the label. Some Fuji's are made in Taiwan. But if MIJ Fijis are manufactured by Taito Yuden, so I'd rather just get it staight from the source.

Oh..... yes, you need to "book type" into DVD-ROM, especially if you're burning with the new DVD+R media and your stand alone dvd player is close to 2 years or older. Book typing or bitsetting is one of the best and safest way to go regardless. As a matter of fact, all original (commercial) dvds are pressed as DVD-ROM format, therefore, it can be play on any dvd players.
However, the choice is yours to make. We're entitled to our judgment and preferences, so use what you deem it's the best for you.
On the other hand, I do "agree" that DVD Shrink and Nero are two very useful tools/applications to have.
