Hi all,

Throughout the forums I see folks asking about the best antivirus periodically. Perhaps it would be worth looking into creating a forum specifically for that. I'm sure it would benefit everyone who comes here who are using norton and macafee (2 biggest I can think of) and provide alternative antivirus software as I see alot use avg free. Just a thought.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Hi,

Does avg have the option of right clicking a file and scanning as norton does? That is one of the reasons I'm hesistant to try avg. Also I looked in task manager out of curiosity and saw norton uses a helluva lot of resources :(.

Thanks ddp....

@creaky,

I think both are okay but I'm leaning towards something not so resource heavy and has the rightclick and scan option. Something everyone on here can relate to as what works for some doesn't mean it will be right for all (regarding antivirus). Mcafee locked my system up and i switched to norton :(. Also being that I'm in the US military (don't make fun) and mainly will be using a laptop until I return to the states it makes it alot easier to use an antivirus that is friendly on mobile resources.

sure, what i meant to add was that mcafee used to be a resource hog, was unusable on older computers, but now since version 8.0 it's very lean, very good for older computers now (such is this olde worlde celeron 466). but you're quite right, each to their own. On linux we're using clamav, but not many viruses on Linux yet thankfully

thanks borhan9, im quite new to pc's, the prob is i downloaded norton internet security 2005 spyware edition yesterday using bittorrent,installed it, but couldnt activate it fully as the keygen did not work, so i was goin to carry on using it for the 15 days free. thats where my troubles started, it was asking me to allow loads of things to access the internet, and as i didnt no whats what i blocked most of them. then today when i turned the com on, even bigger trouble! the pc was running very badly, i couldnt get to my msn email and when i minimize things they dont go to the task bar as they should, they sit on top of it! so i uninstalled norton,well sort of, there was a live update thing it wouldnt let me delete. the pc is now running a bit better, but i still cant get onto msn and minimized windows still sit on top of the task bar. i went to system restore but when i click on the icon, it just comes up with a blank window! any ideas?

Hmmm...damned norton acting up. I don't want to remove it until my subscription runs out so can it co-exist with avg? I learned so much now if I can get this antivirus topic going I think most will benefit from it.

Thanks borhan9 I will uninstall as I was reading an old ddp post, did an online scan and found 4 trojans arrrgh!! Did a search and the trojans are not harmful just adware that my firewall blocks without letting me know. Norton should have caught them as 2 are identified as porn dialers which were attached to a webpage I was looking at pertaining to video editing. Making plans to block all geocities personal pages. Anyway norton has been an issue as a resource hog but wil try avg.

I also use NOD32. Fantastic but I still have two freebies (AVG and Anti-Vir) for the occassional on demand scanning. I also used to use AVAST which was ok too.
