I use SAV10. It is wierd how Symantec can make SAV use under 25mb of RAM, but Norton can go over 100mb easy. Also, SAV10 has a very good adware/spyware scanning engine. Kept my PC clean since install.

For a firewall, I use Sygate personal Pro. Very good and only uses 8Mb RAM.

Has anyone ever used Etrust Ez Antivirus from http://home.ca.com I recently started to use it after becoming frustrated with Norton's 2005. I have been a loyal Norton's user for years. I'm presently trying this antivirus software(which has a 1 yr free trial) along with AVG antivirus and so far it has picked up infected files that AVG missed. Not that AVG is by any means a premiere antivirus program but it's a decent feebie. BTW I whole-heartedly endorse the proposal of an antivirus/firewall forum. Maybe it could be extended to include anti-spyware, registry cleaners,etc. Something more along the lines of a Computer Security Forum. How's this for a forum title.....Lean,Clean & Mean Machine.

I think a anti virus forum is a good idea

just info

ZoneAlarm Free 6.1.737.000
ZoneAlarm makes it easy. Unlike other personal firewalls, ZoneAlarm protects automatically from the moment it's installed - no programming required. ZoneAlarm barricades your PC with immediate and complete port blocking. And, then runs in Stealth Mode to make your PC invisible on the Internet - if you can't be seen, you can't be attacked.

ZoneAlarm delivers simplicity without compromising your security. A getting started tutorial explains controls and alerts to get you up and running quickly. And, to keep you confident that you're always protected, intuitive color-coded alerts rate security risks - in real time.

For basic, "no frills" firewall protection, ZoneAlarm® is the popular first step for many home PC users. And it's still FREE* for individual & non-profit use.

I've tried alot of AV's and firewalls.

The best software firewall is definitely Sygate...while lesser known than Norton or Zone Alarm it is superior. A hardware firewall or router is something I find essential, too.

As far as antivirus, I run AVG free. I've heard many times that Kaspersky is topnotch, tho I haven't tried it.

Norton products are ineffective bloatware in my opinion...although I like Norton Go-Back(originally published by Wildfile) as long as you're not running Linux.

Norton's definitely exemplifies bloatware especially their Norton's System works 2005. I use Zone Alarm Pro(not the latest version) as well and it's an excellent firewall program. Zone Labs now has an Internet Security Suite which offers antivirus, antispyware, triple firewall,id & privacy protection,anti-phishing,spam blocker, web filtering, etc. Sounds like a good product. But my lessons form Norton's have made me sceptical of traditional brand names.

Hi,

Been procrastinating removing norton as looking for a less resource hog. Tried avg really good and didn't conflict with norton. Anyone have issues with avg ? Read and re-read all the posts here and still at a loss where does it fall in antivirus ratings.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Yup I think same and i almost forget what virus is when i used Zone alarm pro.
Now I use Norton and noticed viruses sometimes.
Zone Alarm firewall is just so good that it keeps viruses gone.

hmmm...will have to check on zone alrm firewall. Avg is doing pretty good so far..only conflict is norton does an automatic scan when I start scanning with avg on files and boy that seems to wreak havok on my cpu. Will look into disabling norton to only receive auto updates as avg has grown on me.

I have been having problems getting rid of pop-ups from casalemedia.com and fastclick.net. Spybot s&d detects fastclick and removes it but casalemedia has not been detected by any of the following on my computer:
1st CW shredder
2nd CCleaner
3rd Ad-Aware SE
4th XoftSpy antispyware
5th a-squared antispyware
AVG antivirus
Ez antivirus
I ran everything twice and fastclick seems to have been successfully removed but for the life of me I can't get rid of casalemedia. I am very open to any suggestions presently. Did a google search and XoftSpy was touted as a possible solution. Well, quite frankly, it just hasn't worked.

@Ddp
I sure could use your help right now.

@Matt72
Like you, I'm getting to like AVG as well. Not to enundate you with too much info but if you're still in the hunt for antivirus/firewall software then here's a freebie site worth checking out http://www.hsinlin.com/ I'm going through the list of antispyware so maybe I'll get lucky.

@Jamzbond:

Download ewido -> http://www.ewido.net/en/download

Install and update. Then do a "complete system scan", let it delete things it finds and save report. Send that report here.

Send also HijackThis-log, instructions here (Step 3) -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/263784

Thanks currently looking thru the link seems interesting...alot of unknown software so be wary of "user-submitted" programs. Will post back after I test a few out.

Popupkillers are very useful, but if there's some malware behind those popups (eg. look2me, which is very common), those popupkillers just don't help.

Best combo for me right now is kerio personal firewall (blocks all popups so far) and FireFox. Avg is working great too.
