Did it recognize it before? Could you tell me the brand and model # of the burner? Just b/c it's in a Dell that doesn't mean that it's a dell burner. And is your firmware up to date?

I am fairly new to this stuff, just bought the verbatim 8x DVD-R, and tried it for the first time...and did not work. I think my drive does not recognize it. it recognizes a tdk DVD-R 2x compatible.

i dont know my brand or model#.... the drive says dell on it. I bought it last year - June 2004

i dont know what firmware is and it is probably not updated.

neelv,
I am w/ GlueEater as I also think it is your burner's firmware needs to be updated so it can recog the 8X Verbs.

Do you know how to get into Device Manager. In Device Manager if you look under CD/DVD drives it will list the name and model #.
Post back the burners name and model #.

Firmware is like a guide that tells the burner what the name brand of the blank media is and suggests how to burn it . If you do not have firmware update so it can recog . the 8X Verbs then you will have to find other disks to use or get Dell to get the firmware for you.
If you get that info for us we will get you to an update site and tell you which update you need. It really is easy to update the firmware but if you are ot sure then get a friend to do it for you

Do not think that TDK is the answer. It is horrible media,. You did the right thing switching to Verbs, stay w/ them.

neelv ,
The firmware is up to 10FE
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=14&manufactor=23

Essentially this is what you do. You click on the last update and then a boc should come up and all you have to go through the install. Make sure all other programs are closed out. If you are not sure how to do it the get a friend to do it

neelv ,
Just found the reason you can not burn the (-) DVD's . Your burner is a (+) burner so it will not be able to use (-) DVD

Well good thing it wasn't the oppisite. If it were a -R burner then you wouldn't be able to booktype.

You have a good burner and like GlueEater stated you can Booktype the (+)DVD into thinking they are DVD-Roms. This would make them more compatible w/ more standalone players. The burner is good so now try (+) Verbatims
