Well Im backing up a episode DVD.And for some reason the dvd skips\freezes for a second or so.First let me say Im preview it on the PC and have not burn it off to any DVD media...So that can't be it. Settings are Perform deep analysis before backup and Maximum Sharpness on AEC.I started to see freezing on some DVD thats why Im first previewing it on PC.Any Ideas?

Set target size to 4300 and AEC to maximum smoothness. What kink of brand of media are you using?

Ritek G04 and Taiyo Yuden TYG01.But the skipping happens even on the PC.So I tried using DVD Rebuilder PRO on the same dvd and it works fine but the only thing is that the Quality isn't that great on that DVD and take way to long comparied to DVD Shrink.

What speed are you burning at? 4X should be the max.

What program are you using to burn...Nero or DVD Decrypter?

Matador,
If I read the thread correctly after you rip it to HD and now you are previewing it it skips. If that is the case the culprit is the Original DVD Movie.. If the skip is about 1/2 (or a little more) the way through the movie it might be the layer break. Are the skips just random? If they are Random then it could be the burner. Try cleaning it and while you are at it when was the last time to blew the inside of the computer out w/ air. If this is random skips then this could be really hard to find what the culprit is or really easy. I hope for easy. LOL

Yes its riped straight to HD and no the skips are not random they happen in the same place of the movies. And not just once..Like every 5 or so minites.Original is ok only backup.Well im just going to update all my firmware and reinstall OS to see if that helps.

It can't be the original cuz I used dvd rebuilder pro and it works fine.

Well I hoped it was too..But its not...damm..Im just going to reinstall every thing

Matador ,
You are having a problem I have not seen. I was hoping it was the layer break.

LOCOENG was right when he advised you to set AEC to maximum smoothness, this has nothing to do with the physical back up but what how it is to your HD, and tick teh Deep analysis box, that will make your rips better in quality. But it could easily be a bad press.

When you say you are doing it right now do you mean RIGHT NOW? B/c if that's the case then I think I've jsut solved it. Don't multi task. jsut leave it an go watch TV or something.

multiasking is fine during the encoding stage, just not thru the actual burn process. Not sure if playing a 3D intensive game is ok, but i've done most other multitasking during encoding, just not a game..

Well most of the time I just stream video files from my PC and see them on my xbox thru my TV.Cuz they look much better on tv.And last night the encoding finished and still that thing happens but not at the same places but now in different places.Im guessing it has to do with some program or driver that interfearing with each other.

When I burn off a uncompress iso playing 3D games or not they don't have that skip\freeze.So im guessing it has to do with the actual encoding.

Matador,
Do you have any Drag to disc burning program. They would talk to the burner even if you are not using the program. This is just a stab at the dark

you could try running Nero's info-tool program, pasting the (long) results here; even if you don't use Nero you can download info-tool (free) and it's very good at pinpointing things like conflicts etc

I thought it was fine to multitask during the burn? My burning stage only takes about 5% of the cpu usage. Wow I've messed up.

dont select max sharp or max smooth on shrink.set everything to default and then copy to hd to see if the settings is messing things up.

what prog are you using to preveiw the movie?
have you tried to burn this movie to see if its just messing up on the preview and not the actual burn?

@GlueEater, after 2000 odd burns, i can assure you that multitasking during encoding/ripping is fine (i can vouch for DVD Shrink anyway as that's what i've used for virtually all those movies), but never touch PC during the burn. I've come a cropper with that a few times, messes with the buffers in Nero, result equals bad burn and CRC errors on the disc. i hear that much newer PC's can handle multitasking during the burn, but i'm not sure i believe that, and i certainly don't think buffer-underrun is as bullet-proof as it's cracked up to be..

you got to consider the fact that most people dont have the same computers.so multitasking would have different effects for different people.i read that the new dual core processors can multitask extremely well due to the fact one processor can run a program while another runs another program.

yeah, true. though i get involved in so many threads that i find it better to err on the side of caution and dissaude ppl from multitasking during the burn. i'm 100% one of those who'll preach paranoia to get someone working again with consistent results, it's then up to them if they change things later/get more adventurous or whatever..

creaky,
I'm from the old school. When I am encoding or burning I turn internet off, AV off and do not touch the Computer. My specs are 2 gig ram, 3.2 ghz, Intel Mobo w/ hyperthreading enabled . Can I multitask and the answer is sure but old habits are hard to break. I remember when it used to take 6-8 hours to do a movie so we all used to do them overnight. I do not see anyone that has a newer computer having problems multitasking if they have the proper setup

i have a 2.8ghz p4 vaio media center about 500 ram and i dont multitask either.just in case a problem arises i dont have to worry about another program running as being a possible problem.i always backup when i dont have to be on the comp to make things simpler.also other people (that honestly dont have any businees or know how) get on this comp.so i have to be wary of running programs and what has been installed recently.

Well I have a pretty good machine and I burn, encode, play 3d games and listen to music all in the same time, and my machine doesn't freeze up or any thing.NO thats not the problem......I been doing that for a while and I did get great rips and every thing.Well I don't know what was the problem but I reinstalled the OS and reencoding a couple of movies without freezes or skips..So every thing is back to normal...
