I was over at cdfreaks just to read up on things and see if I could learn anything. I saw the thread where you were stating your bad experiences with CMC (boy are the defensive, heaven forbid you give your experiences when someone asks about something). I was having issues with my burner like you know and Memorex 8x DVD+Rs were the only thing to work for me.

With that said, in 2 days the DVD was unwatchable. I had burned an ISO of the USC/ND football game and all of a sudden the picture (played from my PS2 on my TV) turned yellow and became very pixelated! I brougt the spindle back and got my money back.

I solved my burning problems by updating my firmware. I also find it funny that they blame it on burners/firmware, like its not the first thing people try to fix an error. From my short stay on this board I have read a lot of errors with CMC. Enough that forced me to go out and by Office Depot Riteck dics.

thanks for the support. what i've said about cdfreaks before, (and still do), is that they sure are cd freaks, and dvd freaks (that's a compliment to them). they scan discs like it's going out of fashion, they test all sorts of discs against all sorts of firmware and numerous burners. All great stuff, but what we see here i think are more real-world cases, ie never ending problems with bad media. I myself had major problems with bad media and it took me using 500 of the things before i wised up. Only last night i was trying to recopy some onto Verbatim and Verbatim TY discs. i did manage to do a few, and for a change, all the ones i did, copied fine.

but it's demoralising as there's so many of them to get thru. Yes i can recopy from the originals but that's not the point. I'm the kind of person who in effect, holds a grudge against the bad discs so i get stubborn about it. I put a lot of hours into copying all that stuff and doing it all again, evern spread over a long time, is just a waste of effort. I'm gonna stick to my original plan of just watching them whenever i get around to it, and if one skips, i'll recopy from the original there and then. The crux of it is that i now know what to do to avoid bad burns so that's the main thing for me, and that's why i preach good media so often.

ps all the other guys/gals round here are less blinkered than me re good media, i prefer to stick to a few proven brands/makes. but i do have fantastic luck, though am slowly trying the odd different brand/make, but i'm too in love with the Verbs and now Verb TY to worry too much. recently i had probs with my prized Verbs, but it turned out that my burner had been failing and i didn't realise it. i was just as quick to be distrustful of the Verbs until the finger of blame pointed out the burner. See, when some ppl do knock me now and then, re pushing the good stuff, they don't realise i'm just as quick to say the good stuff has let me down too. well if it does that is.

yup, hence why i don't visit cd freaks too often, think i've done 70 odd posts over there, it's too troublesome though.

i still haven't ordered my Verb TY's, andmerr was getting me into bother on a couple threads on AD lol. I've been tempted to go for some Fuji at svp -

SVP Price: £5.99 / Euro 8.79 inc VAT.

- but still not much in it for the price, my Verb TY are £6.49 a tub.

Thanks, I admit I was ignorant to everything. I'm not the most computer/software/media knowledgeable, but I learn and teach myself things. It has allowed me to get by and do some things that average computer users cannot do.

I bought some bad disc's but I learned by doing my own research and coming out with my own conclusions. I don't look down on people who use CMC's if it works with their set-up. In my short experiences I have had issues with them and will avoid them from now on. I just don't like how over there they treated Creaky for stating his own experiences when someone asked if anyone had experiences with CMC. They gave theirs and when he gave his he got hounded.

As to their site (I really am not trying to put down there site, I just think the people in that specific media forum are a little too tall on their soap boxes.) I think a good example of their lack of knowledge in the DVD arena is shown right here: http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/583

This right here caused me sooooo many more problems than anything else. They have firmware update TS04 up while the Samsung site has TS10. There are 6 updates since that one. If I didn't update from them I wouldn't have had all these media issues. I made 4 trips to stores getting different media because I thought I had every single thing up to date.

The irony of it all is in the media forum they claim that most CMC mag issues are with firmware issues, but they cannot even have their firmware downloads on their own site up to date! This causes sooo many more problems.

- we all start somewhere; i learnt virtually everything i know, from a combination of being inquisitive, and in recent years - google - it's my best friend LOL. Even taught myself a whole new career with just google and being thrown in the deep end. but i digress, PC's are real easy; once you learn a couple of things about PC's it really is plain sailing..

hi doc:)
@ creaky hi :)
ye i saw. the only thing with mine is i still can't get it to burn your Verbs or my R03s at less than 6x. very quick on my contract stuff, no complains about the quality of burns, no coasters. D/Ls brilliant. it's just that i'm paranoid about burning faster than 4x. so it hurts to see it doing it so fast LOL

congrats gurnard, well done buddy.

as per the 6x, yes you may well be ok at 6x, but it's easy to change using omnipatcher, though i only did the odd burn at 4x after that before the drive(s) got canned, so s'pose you could try it and just check the first few disks afterwards...

Re the CMCs. Even I have some of these that are CRC free after a couple of years, but not many. I am doing like creaky, trying to save the ones that give me playback errors. If CMCs truely work for ppl, and i mean over the long haul, then fine. They can keep them. I will never willingly buy them again. CD Freaks have their own opinions, and they can keep them and their beloved CMCs. I am not a member there, but it does look like it has some useful info burried in there. AD is my home, and i am happy with it. Not trying to do a competing forum bash or anything like that. I agree with creaky, we here at AD, see more real world problems directly traced back to, and fixed by replacing CMC discs with good stuff. If CMC is soo great, why does it cause problems for 75-99% of the ppl using them? I am just guessing on those percentages, so don't take that as absolute fact. That is what it seems to run at, and i was really pushing by going down to 75%. ~:)

Welcome to AD also. At least you are learning, and now know about the truely evil empire of CMC. lol ~:) You, or anyone else can have a diverging opinion about media, and if you post here, expect a debate from me if they support CMC. I wont go postal, but no one is going to convince me to start using CMC again. My only purpose in debating this subject would be to try to covert the CMC user thru the powers of logic, if they are willing to listen. If not, oh well. Its not like this is a religion, where i get extra burners and good discs in heaven if i convert enough bad media users ~:) ooooh, the CMC supporters would be in hell burning music and porn for the devil LOL..
