Use the guide in my signature. It explains both programs step by step.

Happy burning.

Great guides! The only thing i see that might cause ppl problems is the enable overlapped IO check mark you tell ppl to use in shrink. Here is what happened to me when i used that check mark, and it happened to other ppl, other systems, also.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234568
My shrink error went away when i unchecked that box, and i have never checked it again since that time.
Did you use wink for that guide? FastFrank told me about that program, and i started to use it, but found it easier to do a screen capture and edit the file size down to fit on these forum pages. I mainly wanted a screen capture, but wink is great for the animation. In that old thread above, my capture size was the whole screen, and that is what thru the formatting of the page off.
If you and others have success with the enable overlapped IO, more power to you. If you start getting a shrink error after checking that box, uncheck it to get back to being able to use shrink.

It isn't my guide, and I would never claim it to be mine. I think it's scubapete's(???), I jsut bookmarked it b/c it's so useful and experly done. And did the error happen the very first time you ticked it? of was it several burns later? I've made about 100 burns w/ that thing on and not a prob yet.

This is why i thought it was your guide:

When someone says "I have a guide", i tend to think they made the guide.
Those are probably FastFranks guides. Maybe it would have been better phrased as "I have a Link to a better guide". Anyways, no problem, they are great guides and will be very helpful to many ppl.
The error happened right away after checking that, so maybe it was just my system at the time? Never came back after un-checking, and i can encode at 12,000 Kb on some movies, so i don't think it will help me. I will try to get to fastfrank and tell him about the overlapped I/O problem.

I'll replace that guide. It takes too long to download anyhow. I have a newer version of Wink that cuts the file size down.

I always have the overlapped box checked but I don't think I see any change. It should have a warning if it causes problems of any sort.

Thanks for looking and especially for finding a potential problem.

I have my e-mail at the website and always appriciate feedback from AD members.

BTW ScubaPete wrote all the guides in his section and I wrote everything else.

Yeah, tonight i got almost 15,000 Kb/s encode time when ripping The Hitcher. My system specs are in my sig line. I use the lighty for the rip, and the LG for the burn. That is not the quick analysis that shrink does first, this is the encode speed usually after doing the deep analysis, and i always use the adaptive error correction setting. In this case i was using AnyDVD in the background and didn't even rip the files to the drive, other than what shrink does when it uses the temp files directory. It amazed me too. I think the encode rate has a direct link to how much compression you are using. More compression = longer time and slower encode rate, and this makes sense. We are asking shrink, and our CPUs to work by compressing the movie. No compression, and it rips it as fast as your drive/cpu can handle, i am guessing that mine was trying to go 48x or so if that is possible for a read rate. On max compression movies (for me 40/60% is the most i use), where i am using all the quality settings, my encode rate goes down to 2 kb or less on the very same system. I even paused the encode to check my DMA settings fearing the drive had switched to PIO, but it was fine. If you are encoding from a file on your HD like an ISO, you can get that speed, if you have SATA drives (and maybe even without them) and a newer cpu/system. I meant my system at that time, it has changed since then, as i am usually upgrading my system as i go along. Since that older post, you can see some changes in my sig line where i have added another 200GB SATA HD, memory up to 2 Gigs, and i changed burners. I also learned quite a lot about DVDs and ripping since then thanks to many ppl here, and countless hours reading threads, and doing internet research. I also have an older Celeron 2.2 Ghz, but i am sure i wasn't using that one, as i only recently re-activated it. It's been a great coffie cup stand for the last half year or so. Now it is a dedicated DVD/CD ripping machine. Any firmware updates are handled by a USB flash drive. It never gets connected to the internet.
@fastfrank
That setting really had me stumped for a while. :) I checked it because i figured i had a Pentium 4 HT, and shrink said checking it may improve performance, it should have been able to handle something that could improve performance. It must work for some ppl, as it works for you, and others. I was tweeking settings in shrink, just messing around, when i ran in to my particular error. I almost gave up using shrink, until i figured it out in that thread i linked to. Even though shrink isn't updated, it is one of the very best programs out there imo. Even when i don't need to shrink something, i still use it to look at the disc structure.

I always learn so much here. Encoding times are interesting. My system alway encodes from 11000 to 15000 kbs as well. I thought that it was normal. I only have the LG for both reading and writing. I am very pleased.

And to all my friends at AD -- HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
