Hi,
I know this has probably been asked a thousand times but I haven't been able to find the answer searching in this forum.
What is the best software for doing ALL of the following -
1/ Watching DVDs on my PC (e.g decoder)
2/ Decrypting DVDs so they can be copied
3/ Copying movies (e.g DVD to DVD)
4/ Backing up data

Does Nero do all these?
Are there better alternatives?
I don't really want to do it with multiple programs if possible.
Thanks.

uniopp ,
Welcome to the forum. The best software is some what subjective as to what I think is best might not be the best for someone else. Nero can do all of the below except for decrypting the movie. You will need to use AnyDVD or DVDFAB Decrypter for that. So if you do not want to use More than 1 or 2 programs then Nero is your choice but most of the members use multiple programs as it depends on the given situation

uniopp,

You can download FFDShow from here and you can watch dvd on your pc even it is AVI, xdiv, ogm, or VOB mepg1 or 2 format.

Ffdshow is a freeware. The best in the market is AnyDVD and CloneDVD and of course you got to pay for it and it is worth it with life-time updating.

Best is a very subjective word, as there are "different strokes for different folks".

I predominately use DVDdecrypter and DVDShrink with AnyDVD running in the background.

Occassionally I will use DVDFab decrypter to rip the files. All but AnyDVD are free programs and work exceptionally well.

For Video playback on my PC I use the open source VideoLan available free at http://www.videolan.org/ Works real well for me.

There is a learning curve to the operation of the programs, but once you get a system down, (have burned a few backups)it will become second nature. It is not as difficult as some of these threads seem to make it sound. Most of the problems associated with these processes can be attributed directly to bad media or bad/scratched dvd presses.

Check out the guides in my signature and you will be on the way to success. bbmayo's guides are what instructed me when I first started a month ago. I have now backed up over 100 dvd's with only two coasters (from my first attempts).

Good Luck and Good Burning.

Thanks for all the replies.
I came accross DVD43 and it seems to do the job as far as decrypting goes. What's the difference with AnyDVD?
Am I better off changing to AnyDVD?
Thanks.

uniopp ,
DVD43 is OK but I think DVDFAB Decrypter or AnyDVD is better as they are updated quicker. DVD43 and AnyDVD are both driver driven programs. I personally think AnyDVD is far superior to DVD43. This month there is a special for AnyDVD Regular price $39.00- 10.00 = $29.00 final price. You must put afterdawn in the promo section. Story below

DVD43 is free, AnyDVD has a free trial, but is currently having a $10 discount through AD so it makes the price $30.
I'm not sure how often DVD43 is updated, because I don't have it on my spare pc.That pc only has nero6/dvd shrink/and DVD Decrypter.

Anydvd is one of the few, paid programs, that is widely recommended. You will need it on the newer sony arrcos encryption.Lords of dogtown/bewitched being the latest.

Anydvd also pulls off cd encryptions. With all the free ripping programs like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter having difficulties on the newer sony arrcos encryption,AnyDVD is paying for itself. It is updated quite regularly.

Nero6 is by far the most used burning software for me. Using DVD Shrink and nero:That combo does well over 90% of my original dvd rips. Doing OTF burning using nero's copy disc feature along with AnyDVD running in the background.

Thanks to ALL the advice here I have now installed -
Nero, AnyDVD, CloneDVD and DVD Shrink so I should be covered for most situations.
I tried to copy my first DVD but was dissapointed with the quality.
During playback of the copy it starts off fine but it starts to pause for about 1 second half way through. It gets worse as it goes on. It's not jumping/skiping but actually pauses as if I pushed the pause button.
I used the following -
AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 (set at Max speed which I think is 8X)
Buffalo DVD Multi Recorder
Maxell 4.7GB Data DVD-R Disk
I did one more copy with AnyDVD + DVD Shrink but haven't watched it yet (will report in on that one later).
Does anyone know what might be causing my problem?
Is this a common problem?
Thanks.

You might want to D/L DVDinfoPro ( http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ ) as it is free w/ adverts. Do a CRC Test on the blank media and see if there are any read errors. If there are then you will probably have to do it over as you might have burned it to quickly or the laser might be off a little. Slow the burn down to Max 4X

That's the first thing to change.I'm not sure of your exact burner model#,but some burners will overburn blank media. I can get 16x on my benq 1620s if I leave that setting of max burn ticked on my yuden000-T02 media.Drop that speed down to 4x,you may have to go even lower.

No multi-tasking during any of the dvd backup process.Anydvd does not have to be on every time you rip an original dvd, unless you do it on the fly. I only activate anydvd on those certain sony/columbia pictures.

View that backup that skips on that dvd-rw drive that burned it.Make sure that drive plays it near perfect.

Ok,
I've tried AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 (set at 4X) but it is still very bad.
I checked the disk with DVDinfoPro and there were no errors.
I also tried AnyDVD + DVD Shrink and the result was a little better but not perfect.
Any other suggestions?
Thank you.

How about DVDFab Decrypter to rip into your hard drive first, then have Nero Recode 2 to encode [check on "Advanced Analysis"], then burn it with Nero Burning Rom. That's my method -- either I used DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter to rip into my hard drive, and you know the rest is history. Pretty sweet and the picture quality is awesome, especially with my 8X DVD+R Yuden media.

In the end, the choice is yours to make and I know that people are entitled to their own judgment and experiences, so use what you deem it's the best and works for you.

uniopp using CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD should work fine a couple of things that may help

while burning DO NOT run any other programs in the background ,even turn off you internet connection

you may need a firmware update on your burner ,heres a link

http://www.firmware.fr.st/

use good blank media as in Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim or stuff that codes out as Taiyo Yuden which would be Fujifilm or Sony DVD+R .8x media thats Made In Japan.

burning at 4x is smart.

Buffalo DVD Multi Recorder ?? not a brand ive heard of that maybe your problem you may need a better burner,Plextor,BenQ,NEC,Liteon and LG are all good brands.

use this guide also hope this helps

After trying numerous differnt kinds of software and settings it appears that the problem may be with my DVD player (not my burner).
When I play back the copied DVD on the burner it seems perfect but that's not the case with my DVD player (which is a cheap Samsung).
Why do the originals play perfectly on my DVD player but not the copies. Is there anything else I can try to get the copies perfect on my DVD player?
Thanks.

Did you get the media code for this? I seem to remember reading a thread about the -R's from Maxell maybe using CMC presses. This is bad.

You can download dvdidentifier free at http://www.filepedia.com

Do you have paper labels on your disc's? These can cause issues as well with a player.

Those stand alones can have a tendanancy to do some weird things when it comes to playing backups. You'll have several different issues:
No disc inserted errors: When they don't like a certain format or even a certain batch of blank dvds.Booktyping with a quality DVD-RW drive comes in handy for those type of errors.

Then if you can get the stand alones to recognize backups: Pixellation/freezing/skipping and other playback issues.Usually a slow burn onto some quality media takes care of that.Keep HD defragged/keep a clean registry/no mult-tasking/no paper-sticker labels and a 4x burn speed.

Main thing: Make sure backups get verified by both the DVD-RW drive that produced it and other stand alone players.Play those backups in several other stand alone/ps2/or pc drives and see how they react to them.
It's usually a stand alone that has trouble. If that samsung is only drive that has issues with your backups,it may need a lens cleaning. That's a last resort in my book then comes time to buy another $25-$35 el cheapo player if it is the only player that shows the pixellation/freezing issues after you tested those backups on other drives..

Some stand alones just have a harder time reading our backups. As I have found out, some stand alones will have trouble with certain DVD-RW drives backups despite quality media.I've got 3 DVD-RW drives sitting here that have a lower compatability rate than all 3 of my benqs. Quality burners are also a must, and the booktyping feature is a bonus!
