Hello,

When i try to drag and drop using Windows Explorer (WinXP Ed) a .avi media file onto my external dvd writer the progress box is displayed with the estimated time of completion, and Windows tells me that i have files that need to be written to. As you might expect...

When the whole process has finished, and i double-click the balloon to open up the a new window where the files should be displayed and where i can write the files to dvd there are no files visible and there is no option to write files to the dvd.

I've used this option in the past to drag-and-drop files on cd and it worked everytime, not once did i have a problem. I read somewhere that Windows can only drag-and-drop for Cd's and can not do the same for dvd's...and you would need roxio drag-and-drop or InCD etc.

I also get this error message that i used to get before in my earlier attempts when i tried to even attempt a drag and drop, it says that windows cannot copy file, and i can skip, or retry or cancel, and everytime i retry the error message keeps repeating. So what i did was to delete Nero, and like i have said - that at least lets me drag and drop and receive the progress bar now.

Well, can someone who has had similar problems or has extensive knowledge in matters such as this, please post a reply.

I've tried right clicking on the drive and from its properties checking the enable option, that hasnt worked.

So, Thanks in advance for any replies.

what is the aim?
if this is just for data backup you shouldnt have so many probs, but if this is for you to be able to watch the DVD+R in a standalone dvd player theres a couple of steps you seem to have missed.

The major one is you need to encode your AVI to an mpeg2 compatible format before it is able to be burned to disc and then you will be able to watch it on any standalone dvd player that supports +R discs.

yeah, andmeer, thanks for the post but i solved the problem.

The aim was to drag and drop as many .avi files using Windows XP onto dvd. Well, as you may know Windows does not natively support this kind of action for DVD and was why i had so many problems dropping the files using Windows Explorer.

I know how to encode .avi files into MPEG2 DVD compliant, so thanks for mentioning that but it was not really what i had in mind, like i said, i wanted to drag and drop much like you would do with a CD, but instead with a DVD so i could fit alot more files onto the media and free up my hard disk.

The solution for anyone who is interested is to use a application called VSO CopyToDVD, and use it to drag and drop as many video files that can fit onto DVD, using the capacity limit bar to add and delete until you are at, or below your limit.

the problem im having now is trying to figure how to burn a whole season onto one single disc to play on the dvd player, my aim here was to free up space, done that and its great, saved 10gb but i now want to play it on a standalone dvd player.

But again, THANKS FOR THE HELP! andmerr.

thats ok, i take it you used a d/l disc to free up so much space.
You could of used Nero but you would of had to make it a data dvd, and then you can drop and drag from one side to the other.

i used Nero (v6.6.0.16) before to burn a .AVI file onto DVD as data, after it finished burning for some strange reason it wouldnt open the .AVI file when i tried copying and pasting onto my hdd, so thats why i used CopyToDVD as an alternative.
