Hello, I have a question for the good people of afterdawn ? i have run into a problem , i started using some tdk-r 8x and verbatim -r because i have to, i have kids around here who like to play their movies and they get them scratched so i have to make backups and i also do this for their games on x-box (modded) because if i dont they trash them:( ..well anyway the x-box can only use -r media ,so i heard on here that tdk -r is a good choice so i have a boatload of it now . So the other night i backed up one of my movies on tdk-r 8x and it skipped using dvdfab and nero recode 2 and tried again on verbatim 16x -r same method 2x burning speed using a NEC 3520 updated firmware 3.04 never had a problem until now any suggestions for -r media??? also the few backed up games i did seem to play fine, do you think they will lock up later in the game as the kids advance through it??? thanks for your time /Unjust p.s the tdk's code out as TTGO2 -r 8x

Personally I avoid TDK discs the same as I avoud Memorex. As far as the Verbatim .. excellent stuff, I get it whenever it's on sale. There are three different 8x TDK -R codes: TTG02 (yuck), TYG02 (excellent) and TTH01 (yuck). If you can't return the TDK well .. Just chalk it up as a lesson learned ..

this time i am COMPLETELY on catfreak's suggestion bandwagon, i detest the TDK's own coded media as he had mentioned, and would even personally recommend CMC MAG's over the TTG02/TTH01's~ :) that's how MUCH i personally hate that media~ :P

the Verbatims are very good media in the dash format, while i have not used MANY of them, i would still recommend them as i've only used about 200 of them as i'm a dvd+r guy myself~ :)

for another suggestion on DASH media, may i suggest the Taiyo Yuden TYG01s...? they are 4x dvd-r made by Taiyo Yuden, i have thousands of these that work perfectly~ :) i too have the nec 3520a, and these TYs work magnificently~! :)

supermediastore.com always has sales on these, here is a link so you don't have to go looking around for some...

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-matt...

this is an excellent deal...200 for $59 shipped~ :) works out to be LESS than what you would pay in stores given the avg. of about $0.40/disc locally, this is approx. $0.30/disc~ shipped free~ :) and i can assure you these are GENUINE Taiyo Yudens~ :)

good luck, i would TRY to return those TDKs if you can, i really don't know WHERE you read that "TDK" were considered "good media", i know for a FACT, i have NEVER said anything along the lines of "tdk is good media", in MY opinion, they are FAR FROM IT~! i would PERSONALLY use Memorex over TDK, and that's just MY 2 cents on it~ :)

docTY~

Do tell kivory666 why all the passive aggression toward TDK? You must have hundreds of failed or failing TDK burns.

Hello neodave, have you had any luck with tdk??? or has anyone for that matter ? the reason i ask is at http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm it says that tdk is first class media so thats one of the reasons i bought this stuff in the first place. but i had a few bad burns with it unlike i have had with TY media . usually when i use TY or verbatim i have really good luck with it :)i know a few people on this site have said tdk-r's are pretty good but i cant remember thier names? just would like to hear others experience with this stuff?/unjust

put it this way neodave, when i first PURCHASED a spindle of TDK media in the past, i would have to say about 80/100 were "failed" burns, ie. pixellation/freezing/skipping/or just plain and simple, a "coaster" that would not play at all on about 6 different stand alones that i own or a friend owns :)

compatibility was non-existent, let alone the CRC errors, PI/PIF errors that were on those discs...hey, perhaps i really DID get a "bad batch", but approx. 80% failure rate is NOTHING SHORT of CRAP to me~ :) i was then given another spindle with a different TDK manufactured (TTxxx) coded media from a friend, who requested me to make a few backups for him and i even let him choose which burner/programs i used (i have 6 different burners on various desktops and 2 more DVD+R format ONLY burners on my laptops)

to make a long story short, i tried about a dozen TDK manufactured media using DIFFERENT burners/ DIFFERENT programs as per his request, just to TRY to get 1 successfully burned backup, unfortunately, that was just another waste of a dozen more discs~ :)

i've burned THOUSANDS of discs in my 4-5 years into the dvd burning game using various programs/burners during that time, and i have THOUSANDS of flawless burns on my Taiyo Yudens, Verbatims, Riteks, Maxells, and even some lesser known media with quality scores that are "decent" meaning 94-96 range using Nero cd/dvd speed testing. so when it comes down to the "bottom line", at least for ME, i've had more success FROM EXPERIENCE with even CMC MAG memorex than i have with TDK's own manufactured media...

naturally, this is MY OWN opinion of TDK, you wanted a "reason why", there you have it...when i have THOUSANDS of discs that can show anyone who questions my "user experience/knowledge about dvd burning"; the "proof" is in the pudding as people say...

hope that gives you a little bit of insight into WHY i detest TDK's own manufactured media so much...when I personally rank CMC MAG media above something, you KNOW, at least for me, it MUST be crap~ :)

@Unjust2u

Yes I have had very good luck with TTG02 disks. Even better than any Ty or Verbs that I've tried. Disk scans are almost perfect and playback is flawless. I burn them at 4x maybe that helps I don't know. Take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. What works for one may not work for another. I have zero experience with backing up games. 99.9% of my backups have been DVD Shrink/Nero. On a handful I used DVD Decryptor or DVDFab Decryptor. Those are the only programs I've ever used. I have 3 burners all of which are Pioneer.(DVR105, DVR107D, and DVR108) Since 2001 I've burnt around 1500 backups. The majority early on were Riteks because they were the most affordable. All those still play great today. In the last 12 to 18 months I started buying at the Brick and Mortar stores because they finally became affordable. This much I know for sure. People here treat their media like most people are with cars. Your Chevy, your Ford, your Toyota etc. I'm a Toyota man myself. Those Japanese make a long lasting truck ya know. Pretty good media too. I don't think it's all bad to be a little versatile. I've used alot of Ritek, Ty, and Verbs followed by TDK-R, Sony+R, Fuji+R and Maxell+R. Ask me again in 20 years and I'll tell you who's best.

well, neodave, glad my somewhat lengthy post meant nothing to you, you asked a question, and i replied... :)

anyways, we all will have our preferences on media, i'm not gonna argue with what works well for you, no skin off my a$$, just sharing my own experience for those who ask...

secondly, i have about TRIPLE (3x) the number of burns you have under my belt...so, everyone SHOULD take people's opinion with a grain of salt. use what works best for you, afterall, it's YOUR money, YOUR backups and it's for YOUR enjoyment. :)

I'll take the 16X Verbatim DVD-R (MCC004) anyday over the TDK. However, I prefer the any +Rs over the -Rs though.
