does anyone burn dvd's for a living? not illegal movies or anything, but does anyone do vhs transfers/photo slide shows/wedding videos for a living? If so, what do you tell your customers when they say "My dvd isn't playing right" or that it's skipping, freezing, pixelating or all the above? since we know that all dvd players react differently to different brands.
I'm just curious because while I don't have my own business or anything, I do a lot for family/friends for free and sometimes things play great - sometimes I hear they loved the work - but there were a few rough sections - they don't seem to care, but being a perfectionist, it ticks me off! I'll play them fine on my Sony dvd player - which i've had for probably 4 years, my computer, and the other older Sony that i've had for a while but when I give them out - I usually hear something to the effect that it was great - oh, but do you know it doesn't play right...
I know Memorex is known as complete trash, but i've never had complaints from anyone who i've given that to (before I knew much about media I used them all the time), now, because I worry about their life span, I bought white hub printable Taiyo Yudens - which play fine for me, but not for others.
I know that not all players are capable of handling DVD-R's - but for the people who do this for a living - is it common for customers to complain? especially ones that really, REALLY don't understand DVD-R technology. To some, a DVD is a DVD and that's that.

I don't do dvds for a living, but all I can say is you definitely need to get Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Maxell DVD+Rs and book type them into DVD-ROM, there problem solved.

I read somewhere that gunard does wedding dvds. I haven't really had a dvd long enough to know about longevity, but hopfully I won't have to, seeing as how this was teh first site I went to when I started and learned about cmc mags before they could do any dmg to me. W/o this site I'm gonna have to say that I probably would have gone down to OD and gotten some memos.

I have made a few videos for friends (weddings, plays, etc...)
I ahve used Sony, TDK, Fuji and Memorex. Basically a name brand that is on sale, I will buy. I have not had a problem related to the above brands. Sometimes a problem with the operator (me), but not the above brand names... :)

Well, first you have to determine if the glitches are in the original, authored DVD. You say they play flawlessly on your DVD player, so then I would suspect the media or their players. Sony DVD players will play anything you throw at them from my experience with 2 of them, so even though the burns may be flawed (lots of PI/PO errors, the Sony will manage to read them. Since they play in your relatives' players, it's probably not a compatiblity issue which something like booktyping or changing the media from +R to -R might solve. If they have a PC DVD player, suggest to them to try your DVD in it and check that rough spot. I find PC DVD players are much better in correcting and reading flawed media. My guess it's a combination of the media (maybe you should burn at slower speeds) and their not-so-great DVD players. You can always run a PI/PO test to check for errors and readability on your media to confirm my suspicions. A "burned successfully" pop-up from Nero does not mean it burned without errors which might affect playback.

I do quite a bit of backing up for my friends and family. Lots of home videos.
I too had the compatability issues when it came to all their players being able to play them. Not so much freezing/pixellation/skipping,but mainly no-disc inserted errors. Some would not recognize the backups that came off of 1 of my 2 DVD-RW drives at the time.
That's where the booktyping ability of a quality burner helps considerably. I've had crappy burners with the booktyping capability that still didn't compare to my benq 1620. I wanted 2 booktyping burners that I didn't have to worry about who got what backups whether it was dash or the booktyped dvd-rom and from which burner. The booktyped dvd-rom backups from my benq played virtually everywhere. If I did encounter a stand alone that didn't play those booktyped backups, then it wouldn't play my dash either.A second benq 1620 and another benq 1640 is playing just about everywhere.
My formula:
Dependable pc with a clean registry.
Quality booktyping DVD-RW drive/s
Quality dvd-rom drive to be able to get a better read
Quality media-A must!
Reduced backup target of 4360 mbs
Quality burn program,mine is nero6
Backup from hard drive-no disc to disc copy or DVD Decrypter ISO read and ISO write.I've had the most trouble with the ISO read and write for some strange reason.
4x speed max.You want to burn at the speed which gives you the fewest PIE/PIF errors as possible.Sometimes you get more errors at a slower speed.
No multi-tasking
No spyware/mal-ware/or virus's
Defragged hard drive
If I encounter a problem with my friends/family playing my booktyped backups, then 99% of the time their player/s are at fault. Dirty lasers/old drives with wear and tear/or they just can't handle burned dvds.If the lens cleaning doesn't work, then usually a replacement $30 player will fix their issue. The fancier the player, the worse they are at recognizing backups.I've seen many stand alones that their specs would say they can play dash/plus and can't.I've proven many people wrong when they said their standalones would not play the plus format. By booktyping,I fooled most of those people.
To be able to play your backups virtually anywhere,it comes down to booktyping and QUALITY!

Disco frog only knows quality!
Quality media + Quality DVD-RW drive = Near original backups!
I've had 3 other DVD-RW drives and notice the difference between these weaker burners and my 3 benqs. Those 3 drives played their own backups perfect, but my own stand alones and other pc drives could tell a difference. It's survival of the fittest for me,and those weaker burners had to go!
Anybody need a barely used: HP 640c lightscribe/ I/O Magic 16x/ or a Khypermedia +8x? LOL!!!!!!!

thanks for the responses -
yeah, I hear Sony's play almost anything - here's another concert I have - I have two cases of printable dvd-r's *Imation* which suck - haven't tried them in my new computer though (iMac G5), and Taiyo Yudens which i've been using for everything recently - a while ago, I did a check with my first disk and the code was TY02 *I believe* - whatever it was, it was the real deal - but then on the small clear plastic on the inner part of the dvd, I told someone here the numbers on it and they said they might be fakes because the media code can be faked. I honestly don't think they are fake - god I hope not, I have about 60 left! Even if they are, they are fine for my stuff though, just not anyone else - I put in one last night and it played perfectly for me - but that was my sony player.
I have a new computer as I mentioned above, *iMac G5* with a superdrive and DL burning, so I need to get something like dvdinfo pro for this computer - I need to check and see if I can use that on a Mac - also, does anyone know if it's possible for me to change the booktype? I use iDVD, which is entry level authoring software, so probably not....
thanks!....

I don't think sony makes hub printable media. The best hub printable media to use is verbatum datalifeplus (only media I use) or taiyo yuden dvd+r's and booktype them to dvd-rom. Keep burn speed to 4x. I've only had one coaster with my verbs and turned out it wasn't a media problem. You can find these on sale from time to time at various places such as supermediastore, rima, meritline, newegg, and amazon.com.

hi :)
i don't do it as a living (being a trawlerman is my first love)
but i do an awfull lot in my time ashore (very profitable)
as alkohol has said, i booktype all to - rom and good media
and as saugmon says, never burn faster than 4x. never disc to disc always from HDD.
the only difference with me is i only use decrypter, in read and write mode, and my target size is 4300mb
do customers complain? YES
i have found that most disc's that supposedly will not play have a dirty great thumb print or scratch on them that were not there when i gave them out. i even had one come back (one of my "cough".."cough" movies )that the guy had spilled a cup of coffee over.(he admitted it under pressure ) gave it a damned good clean gave it back to him and walla perfect

yeah, I hear you about customers/people being careless! one person I did dvd work for, gave it back and said "It didn't work" and then I look at the back and it's COVERED in figerprints and scratches - after I show her that, I find out that her kid played with it as a toy! yeah, no wonder it doesn't work.
I don't know much about booktypes and the differences - so i'll have to read more on that - and find out if I can even do that on my computer...

I don't do it for a living, but I do it as part of my living. I use a computer that is a different one than the one that I'm using now. I have no anti-virus proggy or anything unecessary for the disc creation process. And saugmon is right ... quality, quality, quality. The three most imprortant things in DVD creation is quality. In the past, I've used a Ricoh MP5240A, a LiteOn SOHW1633s, a Plextor PX712A and some POS Samsung. I now use a BenQ DW1640 and have not produced a 'return' yet. Mostly I use Verbatim +R (MCC) or Fuji +R (Yuden) and I ALWAYS booktype to DVS-ROM. Occasionally, I'll use a DVD-R (only for special requests) I don't use printables and usually I don't even mark the discs. As far as the burn speed .. I burn 'em at the rated speed and it has never been a factor in a bad disc.

Booktyping/bitsetting has nothing to do with your computer. It all depends whether or not your dvdrw drive is capable of doing it and what proggy's you have or use. What make and model dvdrw do you have?

I'm not familiar with that drive and can not find any info on it other than it is a toshiba oem and D101 is the latest f/w. I doubt that it is capable of booktyping/bitsetting. Your best option would probably be to use good quality DVD-R media (second to dvd-rom compatability wise) and limit burn speed to 4x. Check your f/w and make sure it is current. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2094

gurnard,
what kind of insurance, if any, do you have for doing this? I'm thinking about doing a small business myself, on the side, but you definitely need some kind of insurance - these tapes people give you are priceless, don't you worry about your vcr eating the tape or something terrible like that happening?

@gurnard .. What kind of VCRs do you use? I have 2 Panasonic AG-6200 and 1 Panasonic AG-6300MD that I've been thinking about just tossing. If you or someone else wants 'em .. pay shipping and they're yours. (They're really heavy so it may not even be worth it) But, if you're interested ...

I haven't had many problems lately, and I burn a LOT of DVDs for a LOT of different people. My home videos, their home videos, a few reauthored, and a few 'others'. :-D I have a LOT of crap loaded on this system, and I surf/play MP3s/scan/edit photos while mastering &/or burning, and I rarely get coasters. When I do, it's almost always a result of physical damage to the original disc; very few burn errors. I use Verbatim, TDK, HP, TY, OptoDisc, & even some really low-end discs like ProDisc, Starlogic, & Maxell. My JVC (in my sig) won't play +/-RW at all, but everything else plays in everything. My sister's Yukon overhead, my portable Toshiba, & everyone else who has tried them.
I run NSW & Spybot frequently & in the background to keep my registry cleaned up, and they don't seem to interfere.
