I have run across something that has never happened to me and wonder if anyone can give me any input on it. I just opened a new spindle of 50 Imation DVD+R discs. According to DVD Shrink, I successfully burned 4 different discs but none of the 4 will play on 3 different DVD players. They will play on my PC but not on any of the stand alone players. I reburned these same movies using a different brand media and they play fine in my players. I've never had a media that would burn but wouldn't play. Does anyone have any input on this situation? I have 2 more unopened spindles and I'm afraid now to even try them. Incidentally, I have about 15 Imation DVD+RW's that I have been using for about a year and have never had a problem with them. Any help would be appreciated.

Imatation DVDR media is garbage. Their RW media is marginally better and that's why you've managed to get away with using the DVD+RW discs. Get yourself some decent DVD+R media like Verbatim which is on sale at Office Depot for $34.99/100 or Best Buy $17.99/50 and you'll notice a big difference

If you can't return them you could try to booktype change to DVD-rom and keep your burns a 4x or slower. This may help them play in stand alone players.

Of course your burner has to be able to accept booktyping.

I'm not familiar with booktyping. I was able to return the unopened spindles today but that leaves me with a spindle minus 4 frisbees. I may try to return them also. Thanks!

May I reccommend some some good media? Taiyo Yuden it THE authority when it comes to dvd media. Verbatim is good as is Ridata. Fuji, Sony, and Maxell are good but only if they are made in Japan so read teh label carefully. Not all DVD players can read +/-, especially the oldre players and PS2 and Xbox. So you have to "booktype/bitset the disc to DVD ROM which is the universal booktype and will work with all players. However not all burners can booktype, could you tell me what is teh brand and model # of your burner?

Rather than booktype crappy media you should just get good media, but still booktype anyways. For bad media I would say burn at 2x, 4x is fine for good media and even 6x-8x but not bad media.

I have used all of those and had very good luck with them. I was really surprised that the Imation discs didn't work because so far the only discs I have had fail on me are store brand discs and needless to say I don't buy those any more. My burner is an external Iomega Super DVD. I don't remember the model number other than that and I'm not at home right now to check it. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Imation DVD+R??? I've seen tons of them everywhere, but I would never ever buy them regardless. As long as Yuden Co. Ltd, MCC or MKM and Maxell keep on manufacturing their high quality media, I'll never ever lay my hands on cheap media period. However, the choice is yours to make.

Yeah... but really Taiyo Yuden ROCK..!!

I was going to say maybe your DVD player can't play +Rs, but you said you use +RWs without a problem. Don't throw out those burned discs. If you give those DVDs to someone else, they might play in their player, especially if they have a Sony. Also, what helps is if you have Shrink create the files on your hard disk, then use Nero to burn choosing 'DVD Video'. Using 'DVD Video', Nero will know it is a movie and check for DVD compliancy, not just that the files are burnable. For example, it'll make sure you have VOBs, IFOs, BUPs, and that the BUPs and IFOs are matching.

i pasted this into an Imation thread earlier so will add here too -

see here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406

- most of that page (my long reply on that page i mean) is mainly about Memorex but the same opinions apply to Imation. in fact Imation is mentioned in that reply too

Thanks for the replies DogBomb and creaky. Creaky, I will try to read the excellent link you sent later. DogBomb, I have a Sony DVD player and these Imation burned discs won't play in it. I've also tried them in my old Apex player, which normally will play anything I throw at it, but these discs won't play in it either. I tried burning the same movies to another brand disc and they play fine in both of the above mentioned players so it's got to be the Imation discs. As I said earlier, the Imation burned discs will play in my PC DVD player. It's strange to me because I've never had a problem with any media except store brand before.

Staples have those imations on sale for $25 for spindle of 100. Looks like we'll see many burn logs coming in the future! I saw a guy carrying out 2 of those spindles earlier,I think he was suckered!

Why get those 25 cent Imations when you can get the Office Depot riteks for the same price this week?

Dammit: I just hit OD verbatim 16x sale last week and still working off the last 30 cent fuji yudens from staples last month!

Maybe I can get that next OD sale. Not worth driving 45 mins for them.

Did you see the Office max verbatim sale? 10 dl discs for $20!

Unfortunantly, Office Max is sitting a couple blocks away from my nearest OD! UGGH! I've still got enough verbatim DL mediafor a while.

Hello everyone.
I was just looking for TY media on AD and I found someone selling general purpose TY for .57 each for silver and .84 for the white printable. My question is is there another type of TY other than general purpose or thats it, is general purpose TY good for backing up dvd's? also is that a good price?

When testing media with Nero speed does the disk have to be blank? Thanks, Boriken

@boriken

wow, those prices are WAYYYY too high for Taiyo Yuden media...secondly, the "general purpose" ones are usually the ones that various online outlets sell, i have yet to see any "specialized" ones intended for a "specific purpose" lol~ :)

so, you should be just fine w/ those, just find a place that has them cheaper..my suggestion would be supermediastore.com as they have 200 8x dvd-r TYG02s right now for $67.99 w/ free shipping. :) which comes out to $0.34/disc~ almost 1/2 of what you said you were getting them for....

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-me...

lastly, when using nero cd-dvd speed, you need to have a WRITTEN/burned disc to test, you check it AFTER it is burned, not before~ :)
