Newb here, first post asking for help but I have found this site to be excellent for most/all of my questions. The Guides are fantasic.

Anyway, I have a Toshiba SD-R5372V DVD burner that I startedusing to burn movies etc. Used it and it worked perfectly the first 3 times using Memorex DVD+R media and using DVD Decrypter for burning. Now the last two movies play fine on my computer but not on my DVD player.

My DVD player usually plays anything, VCDs etc, so it's not a real fussy one. I'm looking for ideas/help on what I can try. I've read abut Booktyping, can someone explain this (in step-by-step terms) to this newb please. Is it something I do on the DVD Decrypter?

I haven't tried DVD-R media, I guess that might be my next step, but I'm wondering why I had no problem and now I do.

All/any help is appreciated, thanks.

You are about to be hit with many posts saying how bad Memorex discs are. Time to buy better blanks, such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Burn at 4x speed.
Booktyping is a process that "changes" the code on a disc when you burn it. It can only be used with +R media, and it gets changed so it reads as DVD-Rom not DVD+R. DVD-Rom is the type of disc that movies from any store you buy or rent movies from are coded as. Therefore it fools your player into thinking it original not copied. Better chance of compatability this way.

hi, and welcome. let's see exactly which Memorex you have there, download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and use it to 'identify' one of those discs, pasting the results here

I'll check that out and post it when I get home in about 15 minutes. Doesn't DVD Decrypter show all that info too? And I've read how Memorex sucks etc but the disks came free with the burner so I tried them first (and had great sucess, 3 for 3). Is it "normal" to have this kind of inconsistancy?

DVD Decrypter may well give you media info, but i very rarely use DVD Decrypter

As to Memorex, a small snippet from a link in my sig - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406
Quote:
the trouble with people like Memorex is they use widely varying quality in disc manufacturers, the most appalling being CMC Magnetics (hence the media code 'CMC Mag'). Memorex aren't the only ones who do this, others are HP, TDK, Imation etc.

snippet from a good list here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 (media codes in brackets) -

Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (MBIPG101-R03-000)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x Printable (MCC-003-000)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (CMC MAG.W02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (MKM-A02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.....)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Memorex DVD-R 8X (CMC MAG AE1)
Memorex DVD-RW 1x (ProdiscDVDRW)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01) MINI DVD-RW 1.36GB
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01....)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)
MemorexDVD-RAM 2x (Optodisc)

So....for instance, in that list there are 3 varieties of +R 8x (none of which i'd say are any good really)

Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)

and here...all i'd say where any good are the MCC coded ones -

Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)

The trouble is, you wouldn't know which ones you're gonna get, just buy picking up a pack of Memorex. And that's part of the reason why so many people have problems with them, they see the name Memorex, associate it with quality cassettes (for instance) in the dim distant past etc etc, and it's the luck of the draw as to what disc manufacturer actually made them. Hence why i won't buy Memorex, HP, TDK, Imation etc etc etc. There are ways with some companies discs, to work out which ones you're gonna get, ie what sort of tubs they're in, are they -R, what speed are particular discs etc etc but most people on the street just haven't got that knowledge and just don't care about all that. I have feet in both camps, i need to have knowledge of media, but i just want media to work, and work consistently and for good :)

...so i am very particular about what i spend my money on, and what i recommend to others.. see my sig for more bad media woes if you like..

I've had Memorex discs including supposedly superior dual-layer work the first time I watched them (usually just enough to ensure the burn worked properly but still) and then never again work right.
Thats worse than a coaster, its a tease. I learned through trial and error not to use them, then after I found Afterdawn I found out why.

phew - you got some decent ones (this time!).

MCC003 are 8x +R discs. sounds like you gotta 'booktype' those +R discs as per Deadrum33's reply...IF this Toshiba drive supports booktyping (otherwise known as bitsetting). have been searching but still not sure whether this drive supports bitsetting...

Creaky, I appreciate your continued help here, please let me know if you find out. I did some searching last night but couldn't come up with any answers. I tried to re-burn a movie that previously worked fine but once again no good. I'm guessing I just got lucky the first couple of times!!!
