I downloaded DVDInfoPro thinking it would work immediately. Well after reading the expiration date, I was wondering how folks are using the free version with an expiration date of 1/11/05. Or is there another product that is equivalent. The free version also crashed after I clikced on the upgrade dialog box. Any feedback would be appreciated.

if you are just trying to identify the media ID coding on your media, then, this would be a "close" equivalent:

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

that one is FREE, give it a try~

good luck

yeah, i used to use dvdinfo a lot, well still do, but just for CRC checking. for identifying media i only use dvd identifier now.

@periea - the program is a monthly free trial so you just have to wait a few days for the next free version to be put on their website, but for identifying discs, as per kivory666, that's the way to go...

I want to do the CRC checking. I have had problems with DVD freezing up or not playing. Any ideas on what software does that? Thanks for the responses.

fof CRC checking i've only really used dvdinfopro regularly. try Nero's cd-dvd speed (free download - google for it, latest version just out is 4.08 - but i don't particularly rate it's disc checking - tried it last night and it wasn't playing ball with one of my USB burners). also try VSO Inspector, i think it's version 1.1.1 at the moment.

ps what burning program do you use, may well be able to help diagnose that for you. but CRC checking is a great start - every disc (luckily not too many) that i've ever had skip/freeze on me, has shown up CRC errors..

Hi there,

Yep, VSO Inspector v1.1.1.48 is the latest, and is also FREE.

From the VSO site:

@creaky

I just got the registered version of DVDinfopro and have a question about trying to set the booktype on my gsa4163b and I want to ask you cause you have this drive as well.

When the booktype window comes up it shows a GSA 4120B, in the title bar, even though the program properly shows the drive D: as a 6143B. Are you following me?

Does this come up like this on yours? Will it bitset the drive properly so that I can burn with CloneDVD2 and have it booktyped dvd-rom?

Does this make sense what I am trying to explain?

I am sure that I have the latest version as I just got it yesterday from the DVDinfopro web site.

hiya. try doing it in Nero - go to 'recorders/choose recorder/options' - tick 'auto' and you should be set.. that's my usual way...

and nero's cd-dvd speed proggy can do booktyping too

Unfortunately I don't have Nero on my system. I have dvdd and clonedvd2. Now I alway booktype with dvdd but was wondering if I used dvdinfopro to bitset if it would burn the disc in clonedvd2 as dvd-rom. Guess I am going to have to take a chance with the ty media and give it a shot.

I was also wondering if your bitset screen in dvdinfopro showed a different LG model than was displayed in the drive.

Thanks

you're in luck. the new monthly trial of dvdinfopro has just come out so i was able to check - all my 3 drives are detected correctly... i'd get in touch with them if i were you...

as to booktyping - download Nero's cd-dvd speed (free) from here - http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html - it's up to version 4.08 now - try booktyping with that. as i say i just used Nero Burning Rom myself to set the booktyping and it's auto from then on..

Creaky,

I have been using DVD Decryptor for burning my ISO images. I started using the verify option. I has help find problem media. I have been using imation media. I never looked at the manufacturing codes until recently. I have had 3 out of 14 failed. I'm planning on buying Sony or Memorex.

@periea - oh no!!! - as per my signature, don't let Memorex or Imation near you burner. here's a snippet from one of those links -
Quote:
the trouble with people like Memorex is they use widely varying quality in disc manufacturers, the most appalling being CMC Magnetics (hence the media code 'CMC Mag'). Memorex aren't the only ones who do this, others are HP, TDK, Imation etc.

snippet from a good list here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 (media codes in brackets) -

Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (MBIPG101-R03-000)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x Printable (MCC-003-000)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (CMC MAG.W02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (MKM-A02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.....)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Memorex DVD-R 8X (CMC MAG AE1)
Memorex DVD-RW 1x (ProdiscDVDRW)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01) MINI DVD-RW 1.36GB
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01....)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)
MemorexDVD-RAM 2x (Optodisc)

So....for instance, in that list there are 3 varieties of +R 8x (none of which i'd say are any good really)

Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)

and here...all i'd say where any good are the MCC coded ones -

Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)

The trouble is, you wouldn't know which ones you're gonna get, just buy picking up a pack of Memorex. And that's part of the reason why so many people have problems with them, they see the name Memorex, associate it with quality cassettes (for instance) in the dim distant past etc etc, and it's the luck of the draw as to what disc manufacturer actually made them. Hence why i won't buy Memorex, HP, TDK, Imation etc etc etc. There are ways with some companies discs, to work out which ones you're gonna get, ie what sort of tubs they're in, are they -R, what speed are particular discs etc etc but most people on the street just haven't got that knowledge and just don't care about all that. I have feet in both camps, i need to have knowledge of media, but i just want media to work, and work consistently and for good :)

...so i am very particular about what i spend my money on, and what i recommend to others.. see my sig for more bad media woes if you like..
