Went to turn on my ps2 today and it doesnt want to work. The light turns from red to green but the green light just flashes. I can hear the fan come on aswell. Oh and the disk tray wont open either and ive still got a disk in there!

My ps2 isnt modded in any way either.

Anyone know if thats it for the ps2? Do i need a new one? Anyone else had similar problems? Is there a way of getting the disk out aswell?

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

You could try opening the PS2 and removing the disc manually... there are only a few screws that you would need to remove. Take off the screws from the bottom and gently remove the lid. Once it is open, remove the cover off the the drive itself.

Take out the game and with the lid still off, hit the eject button and see if it will respond. DON'T LOOK AT THE LASER while doing this :) If you can hear it click like it wants to open, you still have a chance. You can try giving it a tug, or realigning the drive tray itself. I had talked about realigning the tray in another forum... You can read on how to do that here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/249170

Let us know how it turns out.

ive just opened it up (after a long time of trying to undo those tiny screws! argggg! lol) and managed to get the disk out fine.

When i press the eject button i dont hear a click, doesnt even seem to try to open. The blue light doesnt light up either when its pressed. The fan just spins and the green light continuously flashes and the only way to turn it off is by the switch on the back of the console.

Seems a bit buggered to me, shame really, has lasted me a very long time. If any other ideas then let me know. Otherwise its down to the shops for a new one in the next week or so!

Cheers for the help

Do you notice the fan spinning faster than it should be? What might have happened is that your psu(power supply unit) cable might have gone bad.

I ran into this thread today and it might be useful to you: http://www.pstation.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17413

In the thread the guy says that sometimes flipping over the cable helps. This sounds a lot like what you are going through.

hmmm, it wouldnt surprise me if it was the power cable, it does seem a very small problem, thats why its so annoying!

Ive just tried turning the cable upside down but the same thing happened. I think video players have the same power cables on dont they? Im gonna have a look in the shed tommorow and see what i can find. Would be a shame to go out and buy a new console if its just a cable!

Thanks toxic, much appreciated, will post again when ive tried it.

Gutted! just found a cable on my video player upstairs, plugged it in, and the same thing happens. Oh well! At least i know its not just a little cable problem now.

I had also read that it could be a problem with the board itself... If you would like a little project, try running it out of the case to see if it is grounding out somewhere. This probably won't work because the case is plastic and all, but you never know :-\.

You could also try troubleshooting by removing power cables from different parts of the console. Try disconnecting the power off the disc drive and have it plugging into a tv while doing this. If you get a picture, you're on the right track.

This is all wishful thinking though, so you might have to get a new PS2. In any case, I would try to get a PS2 that is the same model as the one you have now. If you have problems in the future, you could always jack parts from this one.

How old is your PS2? Check here to see what version it is: http://mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_ps2_main.htm

you wont believe this, but after taking the disk out yesterday that was stuck, i left the playstation open overnight thinking i can put it back together in the morning. Got up this morning, put it back together and it works fine!! WTF! The weirdest thing ever! No complaints tho, saved me some money!

I didnt think there was much wrong with it, but i really cant understand what it was when ive not actually done anything to it! I dropped a small srew in the bottom this morning when trying to put it back together (bloody small fiddly things!) tried shaking it a bit trying to get the screw back out but it wouldnt come out. So i thought, oh well, its broke anyway, i dont need that screw. Carried on putting it back together, gave it one last try and bingo! Unexplainable ey!

Anyway thanks guys for all the help. Lets just hope it stays like this.

That sucks man... Atleast you breathed life into one last time ;). I had this one PS2 a long ass time ago that was a mod gone bad. I used a 15 dollar mod chip that was too good to be true (neo12). After about a month of glitchy usage, it acted much the same as what you are describing. The only way i could get it to work is if i had it unplugged for around 15 minutes or so and then it would work fine. Sold it at a pawn shop for 30 bucks. Suckers!

You could try that i guess. Either the pawn shop or the 15 deal >:)

Gee and people wonder why you shouldn't buy PS2's off ebay and at pawn shops lol. As far as your PS2 crapping out, once those motherboards get to around 5 years, their on borrowed time. If you ever decide to get a modchip go with the Matrix Infinity or the DMS 4. Settle for no less than the Duo2SE.
