Windows XP
DVD Shrink freezes up every single time I try to use it. Also Decryptor freezes, too. I was able to back up two movies, and then it just started freezing on me and I have to shut down my tower manually, YIKES! I have roxio installed, as it came with my burner. I really need someone to be very kind and help me out. I am not really good at fixing my computer, and am so frustrated. Please help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I think more information about your PC would be of help, .re. how much memory do you have, how bigs your hardrive etc.
what make of discs' are you using, etc etc?

Roxio is not a popular program, but without further information, we're all in the dark.

regards gringle.

Okay, here is some more info about my computer, I hope this is what you need. C Drive NTFS = 24.30 Gigs free. D Drive FAT32 = 851 MB Free. My computer is a 40 Gig. I have tried HP disks, Fujifilm, memorex, and a couple of others. Hope this helps you to help me.

Thank you.

What movies are you trying to backup? Some of the newer titles have new encryption that Shrink and DVD Decrypter cant handle. The specs on the PC look OK. And just a personal note Roxio sucks, get Nero.

DVDShrink is very CPU intensive. Maybe your system is overheating. Take the side off and set a fan to blow cool air into it. This may help.

Make sure that when you are doing your backups that that is all that you are doing and shut down any unnecessary programs and tasks that may be running. When burning, let it burn and leave the computer alone til finished.

emmysmom,
Welcome to the forum. W/in Roxio there is "Drag to disc" program. I want you to go to add/ remove Programs and modify Roxio so it uninstalls 'Drag to Disk". That is the Program that has problems when you try to burn a DVD.

Look in Device Manager and see if there are any Yellow Flags. If there then you have to correct that also.

Can you verify all of the fans inside the tower are working.

Also make sure you are grounded but very that the ram is seated properly and the connections to the HD and burner is firmly seated

Also I would like you to Download a free Registry Cleaner ( google for one ) and then clean your registry of any possible conflicts as that also cause problems w/ transcodin and burning DVDs

I can't disagree with whats been advised so far, but I still think this could be a memory .ie. RAM problem.
Right click the My Computer icon on your desk-top, click on properties, and the General tab will show how much RAM you have.

I know people get along with less, but I'm of the opinion that at least 512MB is needed for smooth burning. Or as the great man said hiself, "ain't RAM sweet" (through the bubbles)

A good registry cleaner is called crap cleaner, www.ccleaner.com

It will also get rid of a lot of crap that is strewn about your hard drive, hence the name.

As for media I recommend Tayio Yuden.

Who said that? I think I've heard it somewhere.

@christ93

I see you've stolen ddp's quote? You DO realize that he's copyrighted that right?

@ GlueEater...Nope can't say I did; being a Buddhist, I ain't to strong on the writings of Christ No1, never mind.. 93..:) But whoever said it,it makes sense.
I thought it was ScubaPete, you think it was someone else.
I think this could be a RAM problem. What do you think it could be?

Yeah I think it's a RAM thing too, and 9mm makes a good point when he said it could be overheating.

What did you mean by the "(through the bubble)" part. I'm pretty sure it was someone here at the forums. Hey! I use to be a buddhist too, was raised it, but now I'm an atheist.

Through the bubbles; that was a reference to ScubaPete.. Bubbles rule lol
When I first joined this site a year or so back Pete was the one of the only people writing guides for complete, and utter newbies, as I was.

And I'm still one of his biggest fans:)

There's an old Zen Buddhist saying...True art, is to conceal art.

And I think Pete does it very well.

Sorry I am such a dummy when it comes to computers, but can anyone tell me how to modify the Roxio program to uninstall the drag to disk? P.S. I do have Nero installed, and the box "allow to burn with nero" is checked.

this will uninstall the whole of Roxio (uninstall Roxio first, then try this) - Roxio Zapper - http://www.microadvantage.net/utilities

not sure how you'd uninstall just part of it as haven't used anything by Roxio for a long time..

You don't need Roxio and Nero both. Remove Roxio, Nero is MUCH better. Also, are you removing the old movies from your hard drive as you back them up. If not, do so, they eat up HD space like crazy. Which can cause freeze ups. If you are using your D drive to copy to that may be the problem.

At what point into backing up does shrink freeze up.

I will try getting rid of Roxio. Can I just delete it? I don't think I have any movies on my hard drive. Shrink freezes up as soon as I hit the backup button. I put the movie in and it will start and finish analyzing, then when that is done, I hit the back up button and it will freeze right then and there. Also, I neglected to mention that I have an external burner. My tower has a place for an internal, but seeing how I have no idea how to install an internal, I opted for an external. If someone could let me know if deleting Roxio will work, I would appreciate it, so I can get my kids movies backed up before none of them work due to being handled by a six and eight year old. Thanks so much!!!

As creaky said, remove Roxio. Then reboot. When you start Shrink next time, goto edit/preferences/file I/O and tick "burn with Nero". Should be allready ticked, but just in case Roxio messed something up. Give it another try. Internal drive would be the way to go.

Here is a link to going internal, nephilim found and suggested a while back. It is for a cd burner but works just as well with dvd burner.

ok. I uninstalled Roxio, used the Roxio Zapper, rebooted, made sure the appropriate boxes were checked in DVD Shrink, used the registry cleaner, and still it freezes. Would it help if I uninstalled DVD Shrink, and reinstalled it? I am at a loss here. Your help is much appreciated.

It still may be an issue of CPU usage. Can you free up other system resources.

Here is an excellent thread on accomplishing this:

See if this helps.

How much RAM is on your computer? That will cause problems if not enough. And I would uninstall DVDSHRINK and reboot then reinstall.

Look: how much RAM (random access memory) do you have?
Quote:
D Drive FAT32 = 851 MB Free.
Is the D drive an extra H/D that is supplimenting your lack of RAM?

They are not the same, again, I reiterate How much RAM?

This is so strange. I did everything that was suggested, and still it froze, but then someone told me I should turn off my anti-virus while running shrink, and it worked! I backed up six movies. Everything was fine. Each movie was deleted by shrink as I did the next one. That was two days ago. Now this morning when I tried to use shrink, it froze up just like before. What could be causing this? If it was a memory problem, why did it work before? I haven't downloaded any programs, or used any more memory than I was using two days ago. I tried disabling my anti-virus, and my firewall and still no go. Anyone know of any other programs that would have a conflict with shrink? Thanks for your patience and help. You guys are too cool.

How often do you defrag your PC? This may be what's causing your problem. You should defrag after every few burns or so. If you've never defragged your PC before, now would be the perfect time to start. Go to Sart, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then Disk Defragmenter and choose the drive where you have your programs installed. Most likely it will be the C drive.
Defrag works by moving slabs of data to unused parts of the disk, in order to open up a large free section of space. It then assembles the fragmented parts of a file and writes them in one complete piece to the cleared space; it then does the same with the next file; and so on until the entire disk is defragmented. Your computer should run a lot faster once you have defragged your PC.
If you're still having problems, it could be spyware. You should scan your machine for spyware.
