@emmysmom

Did you try the link I provided to free up system resources?

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56373

When a system locks up there is usually a conflict with one file or program with another.

Make sure that you disable your anti-virus, spyware blocker, popup blocker before you start the ripping encoding proces.

I ran the program to free up system resources, I defragmented my hd, I ran spyware remover, ran anti-virus, I ran crap cleaner. I also disabled firewall, pop-up blocker, spam subtract, anti-virus, and spyware remover. And still it freezes............

How many MB's of ram do you have? To check go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>System and on the general tab you should see the info.
It is located under Computer:

I can't figure out how to get the MB's of RAM I have. You said to go to start>settings>control panel>system, well, there isn't anything that says settings when I hit the start button. I can get into the control panel, but there isn't anything that says system to choose. I am really sorry that I don't understand how to open this up. I feel like a complete idiot, and appreciate all your replies. I really want to get my shrink going. Please let me know how to tell how many MB's I have.

i am assuming you are on category view on winxp.therefore click start ,then control panel, then perfomance and maintenance, then system.it should be next to a symbol of a computer with a tick on the screen.
you can get your ram on the bottom line

Thank you. 248 MB of RAM. Is that good, or not enough? How can I free some up if it is not enough?

I would think that that should be the minimum that you should have. It will definately be slow. I would recommend that you have more ram added to your system. The price is relatively cheap for the improvement in performance that you will realize. I would consider an upgrade to a gig. You could get by with 512mb's but if you plan on backing up often and gig will serve you better.

This lack of ram may be one of the reasons that your system freezes up while shrinking/ripping.

Do you have a friend who knows something about upgrades?

no, I don't have a friend who knows something about upgrades. Why would shrink work sometimes, and not others? Any way I can delete some programs to free up space? For instance, I have Money 2004 on my computer which I have no intention of using. It says it is 139.00MB. Is it safe to delete this? Would that free up space? Thanks for your patience!!

Sorry, don't mean to frustrate you.

There is a difference between RAM (Random Access Memory) and Hard drive space, which is what you free up if you delete Money 2004.

Random Access Memory is the portal that delivers information to your CPU. It's like a funnel that pours the information into the processor for processing. The more RAM that you have the wider that funnel is and therefore more information can flow through it. Lessor RAM means that that funnel is smaller and can therefore limits the amount of data that flows to the processor increasing processing time.

As to why you system would work sometimes and not othertimes I can only guess, which is what I have been doing, and making suggestions on how to improve the situation.

In my opinion, the RAM issue is your chief problem. I think that you will need to have this addressed to begin to remedy the problems that you are having with Shrink and decrypter. It may work some of the time, but othertimes.......bummer.

getting to the truth of things, is a bit like drawing teeth outa a crocodile.

Just re-boot your system, before & after every burn.

You dont have to uninstall Roxio all you have to do is exit the Drag to Disc part of the software
When you installed Nero if you also installed the InCD part of Nero it will conflict with Roxio's Drag to disc I chose Drag to Disc over InCD
From My experience you can only have one or the other installed
I have Nero 6 and Roxio's EZMC 8 because I use each one for different reasons
I know having both installed works for me I have them both installed on 3 different Machines each with different hardware
I have to agree with the others here that it seems like an issue of not enough Memory
If you look int the owners Manual for your PC it should have a page in it that will tell and show you what slot to add more Memory
I would goto Crucial.com and see what it would cost for a stick of RAM get either a 256MB or 512 MB stick Personally I would go with 512 but thats just me
If you dont feel comfortable installing the Ram check with a friend family member or someone you work with to see if they can do it for you if not you only option is to pay a shop to do it

Yeah, RAM is very easy to install. When I first got my computer, it only had 256MB of RAM, so I ordered a 512MB memory stick and installed it myself. I have 768MB of RAM and I backup DVDs all the time with no problems.

Another great site for obtaining memory is http://www.pricewatch.com

I was just there and see excellent pricing on 512mb sticks.

Use the info provided and identiy the motherboard manufacturer and model name in your computer and we can help you identify the memory type that you will need. Visit: http://www.crucial.com and if you look around there, there is a good instructional on how to add or change memory sticks.

It is not difficult.

Thank you all so much. You have been kind and very helpful. Especially you 9mmruger1!! I will probably end up getting more memory and installing it myself. I'll let you know how it goes.
