Hi all,

Just purchased a lacie external lightscribe dvd burner. I need opinions on which media is highly recommended for lightscribe. Also I have some 16x taiyo yuden (burns flawlessly I might add) but wondering since they are silver coated are they compatible. Excuse me for being naive but a google search/ AD search resulted in memorex being lightscribe compatible :(.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

while i do not own a Lightscribe drive, i am PRETTY SURE that a regular shiny silver is NOT compatible, meaning, you can not use the Lightscribe feature onto a regular disc~ :) i might be wrong, but, i think you need to purchase specifically designed Lightscribe media to be able to "Lightscribe" onto them :)

i am also aware that naturally, they can be "burned" upon...meaning a Lightscribe drive WILL burn onto a normal disc, just not "etch" your image onto the other side~ :)

i feel the "usual" applies when choosing Lightscribe dvd media...purchase from the brands that you KNOW use good manufacturers...so, Verbatim Lightscribe discs would be my best suggestion...i haven't seen Taiyo Yuden make Lightscribe discs, but once again, i could be mistaken...stay away from HP, Philips, and TDK as per the "regular" dvd media to avoid...you should be good~

anyone else feel the need to elaborate on this, please do so...i have never used a Lightscribe disc, so this is just my ASSUMPTION~ no evidence to support what i just said...

thanks kivory i knew if I posted this question you would jump on it :). Dang it for 139 USD I couldn't resist but the dog gone discs cost as much as a dual layer media :(. Hmm will try to see if they will print on a regular dvd...no luck so far with a fuji (made in Japan of course).

:) jumped on it i did~ :)

even though i have no experience with Lightscribe discs or Lightscribe burner for that matter, i think generally, one can assume that the manufacturers remain the same for the "regular" dvd-media and the Lightscribe capable counterpart?

nothing like a good TY to burn onto, it's too bad it can't be "lightscribed" onto as well~

You definitely have to buy Light$cribe media to use that function, but inkjet printables are MUCH cheaper, and look a LOT better. AFAIK, Light$cribe won't do color at all.

@steve,

Thanks seems I jumped the gun but at that price couldn't let it slip away. I'm thinking of using it for my mom's backup as she has this uncanny knack of scratching her dvds :(. Therefore I think i can pass on the color as long as she can identify it. Hmmm lightscribe media is sort of expensive especially with memorex leading the way...! A shame I have all these taiyo stockpiled and can't label them to look pretty.

i can help here..

i got that same burner matt72.. luv that thing to death.. as the doc mentioned.. you do need media to go with it. verbatims are all i trust for my LS. hp makes them, as doc pointed out: they suck.

i beg to differ on the pricing issue. you can get the 10 pack of LS discs.. dvds from best buy for about $15. they actually have a sale right now for half price.. i bought 3 packs of 10 each for about $30. very sweet deal. the cdr's for LS are 30 discs for $20.

here's the link for the best buy sale.. pick them up fast if you want to try these out..

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7193618&type=produc...

Still on SALE!!

here's the cds..

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6965313&type=produc...

regular price.. but at least this way... you can have some kind of idea on what a good price is and what isnt..

i do agree on the inkjets.. they are cheaper.. they are good quality..
there is a ty sale at supermedia store for $39.99 for 100 pack dvd printables..

http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-white-inkjet-printable...

here is the cd versions of those

http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-80-minute-700mb-52x-wh...

so that's my input.. hope that helps..

nice to see the doc joined in.. but then again.. it wouldnt be a media thread without him in it.. lata
