							Hi again,
I bought a blank DVD just in case, I tried also those DVD Identifier programs but still, they dont recognize the media's brand. Here's the log for the VSO Inspector, maybe it'll help a little.

Finally, for the last weeks the driver was many times saying power calibration error before starting to burn, but when that happened I changed the disc or restarted the computer and everything was fine again...I don't know if it's helpful, I'm just trying to give as many facts as possible...

Thanks for everything, I hope we can find an answer...
 Regards.

Hmmm, the dread power calibration error. I'm not near my pc at moment but try googling for "nero power calibration error #9 creaky afterdawn"
Of course there are other ways to find it but I often copy/paste the power calibration stuff from old threads...

I was reading that before, but the main problem is not that, as I was telling, once I changed the media or turned off and on the notebook, the message was not appearing anymore. I just mentioned that for you guys to know that it wasnt working perfect all the time. The main problem is that I cannot burn DVDs now...
 Regards.

							Hi there!
I have a similar problem with my MATSHITA UJ-812 on an IBM T42 laptop. It reads CDs and DVDs, burns CDs, but it just wont burn DVDs. It even doesnt seem to recognize my empty DVD-R from TDK. It spins for a while (say a minute) and then gives up. I managed to burn 3 DVDs out of the 20 i've bought. I'm quite desperate, hopefully it's the media not the burner. Does anyone know anything new about this or a similar problem with the matshita drive?

 Thanks for the replies.

							This is from bbmayos faq:
Quote:and this one from NeroI have a Power calibration error?
Options you can try with "power calibration errors"
o Try another brand of DVD-/+R or DVD-/+RW media. This is the most common cause of OPC errors.
o "Slow down your burning speed".
o Update the firmware of your recorder. Check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
o Check your power connectors, loose connections do occur. Don't share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the errors occurs with an external recorder, Check the USB cable and connections.
o Try different configurations, such as taking the DVD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
o Clean or have your DVD burner serviced. There are cleaning kits available. Sometimes just a gentle appplication of canned air can remove dust blocking the laser.
 o Replace the DVD burner.
lets hope we don't need to do the last one :-)

Quote:might be media, but check everything.9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

 Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service.

I've been reading a lot about others having problems with this drive. Anyone knows where to find tests or which media is best suited for this drive? Just dont want to experiment if someone else already did :)

heh, just found on another forum:
"I own a Matshita UJ-815 dvd-burner (it came with the laptop, so don't lynch me). It worked well so far, but when I tried to write a TDK DVD-RW disk, I couldn't get it to recognize the dvd-rw in Nero 6.6.0.13."

It's an other version of the burner, but obviously matshita has problems with TDK media.

							@mert0n
Some ppl have luck with TDK media, and many do not. I have tried it before, but i will stick with TYs and Verbs. Also is your drives firmware up to date? Out of date firmware can cause some media to fail, and others to make it in that drive.
Cant help on the drive test as i am at work, and not on my home computer.
You can check here for media tests:
 http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=1476&searchdvdw...
and i think the first comment listed is your drive.

							Hi again,
Since burning DVDs with Nero is not possible so far, because of the previously stated problems, I'd like to know which other software I can use for burning...so I can try at know for once if it is a Nero problem or not. Maybe, indeed, my stupid drive is failing and I wont be able to burn DVDs any longer...but I just want to try some things before assuming the worst.

Other question, there is possibility to burn with or without using ASPI drivers right? Is this important? How do I know in which mode I'm trying to write? Is the "disc-at-once" mode relevant?

 Thanks for your help!!
 Regards.

Hi there you can try DVD Shrink along with the now soon to be gone DVD Decrypter. Both of them are free and can be found in the downloads. Also if you go the DVD makers website if they have one most of them tell you what kind of media works well with their burners.
One thing I have learned from here and the 2 cake boxes of coasters, is never buy cheap media.
And always use a good burner.

Hi, thanks! Well, my problem is that I ran out of space in my HD, I have roughly some 1.5GB left, that's why I need to burn data to free space...
In any case, thanks for the suggestion, I'll see if I can find a small DVD I can copy using DVD Shrink.

Quote:Thanks MaxBurn. Came across that page before. I have dual OS on my Thinkpad, so i tried tu burn those DVDs under Linux, and voila, had almost no trouble at all. Next time I'll buy other brands like you suggested. Yep, as far as i know the firmware is up to date. I'm quite curious about how the drive will perform on other DVD media brands...@mert0n

I will take a quick glance at your log, as i am at work, and on break, but will do what i can.

Quote:until things get straightend out, you should set your target size to 4300 as that way you will not burn to the edge of the disc (where dye coverage can be spotty on some media brands) For Nero, it may be under the options setting for the drive in the burn screen, or under the More tab. You can set the target to Custom, and enter in 4300.Last address to be written: 2241567 (498:07.42, 4378MB)

If you can run Nero Info Tool, check each drive using the ASPI tab. I show a screen shot in the linked thread. Bad or corrupted ASPI can cause all kinds of problems. A friend of mine had corrupted system ASPI, and could burn DVDs but not CDs. ???? I fixed his system ASPI, and now it burns everything. That could be your main problem. That and media being used. Use good media like Verbatim, Sony, Maxell, Fuji MIJ. They should id properly, and Nero should like them better than what you have been using.
Check out that other thread, and fix your system ASPI. Then try burning using better media. I don't see any other problems in you last log other than what i listed. Post back if you still have problems. It may take me a day or two to reply.

							hey
i've been having the same problem so i checked to see if my aspi drivers were corrupted so i used to Nero and they were all good but the drivers were from 99 so i thought i'd update them and now that i have, Nero info tool shows the the first 2 (winaspi32.dll and aspi32.sys) have been updated but the other 2 (winaspi.dll and wowpost.exe) are still from 99 and at the bottom of the window it says ASPI installation is corrupted!

 any ideas?
