Okay, so I have Undead and I decided to back up my copy. I first used DVD Decrypter (with AnyDVD running in the background) to rip it to my hard drive.

I then used DVD Shrink (latest version) to burn it to a new blank DVD. My purpose was a test. I want to see if there is any visual difference on a volumous burn when using DVD+R and DVD+R DL. (Undead is nearly 8gigs uncompressed.)

DVD Shrink made a copy of Undead just fine as a DVD-5(4.7GB) no problems what-so-ever. (Using TDK DVD+R 8x 4.7GB media).

Next up was my DL test. I switch DVD Shrink over to DVD-9(8.5GB) mode and I use RiDATA DVD+R DL 2.4x 8.5GB media. (I've made backups of other movies with the same media and same settings just fine.)

My drive is a Plextor PX-740A.

I've tried twice and I get this error when attempting to backup Undead on a DL disc. (Remember the normal DVD+R worked just fine.)

So are there any super guru's out there that can help me out on this one? I'm still a newbie with the world of backing up DVDs.

Thanks!!!

Hello DrClarke. First edit your post by clicking on the pencil/paper icon at the upper right of your post and edit out your Nero serial number beginning 1A....

Your drive is relatively new and only firmware 1.01 seems to be available, so your firmware is up-to-date. Since the error occurred at the layer break, therein lies the problem.

In this case it is difficult to identify the exact cause. Your version of Nero is not up to date. The Current version is 6.6.0.16. This may be the cause. Ridata D01 DL media can be problematic with some burners. Verbatim DL media seems to be better although the Ridata works fine for me. You really need to booktype burned +R DL media as DVD-ROM for most standalone players to read and play (Nero will automatically do this for most burners. I can't tell whether it would have for yours based on the log info provided). Using DVD Shrink disturbs the layer breaks. You should rip an iso file from the original using DVD Decrypter in Mode -> ISO Read. Then burn this same iso file to your DL media with DVD Decrypter in Mode -> ISO Write.

To bitset the +R DL booktype to DVD-ROM for your Plextor burner:

1. Use DVD Decrypter with no disk in the burner and set the mode to ISO Write.
2. In the "Destination" box, right click on the name of your burner and select "Change Booktype..."
3. Click on the "Plextor" tab.
4. In the "Change for" box dropdown menu select "for DVD +R DL Media"
5. In the "New setting" dropdown menu select "DVD-ROM"
6. Click the "Change" button.

I think your Plextor burner is likely a rebadged BenQ 1640. If the above doesn't work you may be able to flash your burner with updated BenQ firmware located here:

Nero6 has trouble with the layer break on dl media.Nero7 is suppose to take care of that issue. Here's what I do on my dual layers using dvd decrypter.

Open up dvd decrypter
Mode/ISO/ read to hard drive.Note where those files go/click hard drive/burn icon.
Mode/ISO/ write: Locate the mds files of that movie/open/OK
Click burn/hard drive icon and that's all she wrote!

I love nero, but the iso read and write in dvd decrypter is so much easier and faster.

That was some good information guys. Nice pointers I can research even better when I get home. (I'm slightly testing it right now by remoting into the machine at home from work.)

Laddyboy:

Thanks for the key edit note. I didn't even see that.

Your notes make it sound like I should avoid DVD Shrink and just go with DVD Decrypter and just use .iso's.

I followed your six step instructions and this is what I discovered. When I'm in the "Change Book Type" menu under the Plextor tab, I modify the "Change For" value to "Drive (For DVD+R DL Media), but then the value underneath it, "Current Setting" reads "Unknown (FAILED!) and I'm completely unable to change any value in the "New Setting" pull down menu.

I notice at the end that you mention my plextor might be a rebadged BenQ (which makes me sad). So I decided to go to the BenQ tab and apply the same value to the "Change For" field and lo and behold, the "Current Setting" field now reads "DVD-ROM" and I can now select the "DVD-ROM" value in the "New Setting" pull down menu.

I'll have to wait to get home to try it with media. Are BenQ drives bad? I've always used Plextors and I've always loved them. Is my taste for Plextor now tainted?

Saugmon

I will update my Nero to see if that helps.

You also mention to only use DVD Decrypter and there is non mention of DVD Shrink, so I will give that a shot next. (I also have AnyDVD running in the background all the time.)

Thanks you two, can't wait to get home and try and beat this one.

You would not need to use shrink as you are using a DL disc. No need to compress.

DrClarke, BenQ is a very good oem burner. Many recommend the BenQ over all others. Plextor makes you pay for the brand name. I don't know what you paid, but the BenQ 1640 can be had for US$40.

If you're burning onto DL media presumably you want an exact copy of the disk and thus no additional compression, i.e. no DVDShrink as Saugmon pointed out. By ripping an iso and then reburning the iso, the layer breaks and all else are identical to the original.

Plextors-rebadged benqs: Don't be so bummed out. These benqs are phenomenal. They burn over 99.5% success rate and play on 95% of my own personal/family/and friends stand alones/ps2s/and pc drives! Phillips is another manufacturer that has gone with benq drives.I've got 3 benqs now,and wouldn't trade them for anything.

The booktyped plus format to dvd-rom is the way to go.If a stand alone does not play my backups, then a new stand alone player is needed.

Dvd decrypter ISO mode is for uncompression/1:1 copy whether it is dual layer, lower budged DVD-5 to DVD-5 , or even extra copies of one of your DVD-5 backups.

Dvd decrypter file mode: You need DVD Shrink to compress it.
