just a quick noob question... I have a avi file with the following stats:

(video)
DX50/xvid (codec) - Divx5.0
23mins 10 sec's (length)
640x480 (1.33:1) 4:3
739 kb/s (Bitrate)
NTSC

(Audio)
Mp3 126kb/s cbr 48000

i used this guide to get it to a dvd

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd.cfm

Well it all went fine (bout 3hours), but the quality was bad - i could see blocky shapes every second. I checked the mp2 video file before i burned it to dvd to check quality (using a DVD playable software (Asus power dvd)). I would like to know how to keep the quality the same?

I used all the same tools as in the guide (although i used Gspot for file info.)but something still went wrong? NOW before you all going pointing fingers saying my 'encoded' bitrate was too small - I used a bitrate between 5000 to 6000 cant remember exact number. I'm tring again at 8000 (surely?) Also the file play perfectly as an AVI.

The file was originally 150Meg - after encoding it went to 721 Meg for the video and about 70 Meg for the audio (these are presumably good enough for quality - but the weren't majorly!)

So any ideas on how to just to plainly (using TMPGec Plus) be able to convert the avi to look the same in mpeg format that i can use in SONY dvd architect to make a nice looking (menued)DVD that will play on my DVD player and TV?

You could try DVDSanta or VSO DvxTodvd both convert AVIs' into DVDs'

Both have free trial programs. See software links above.

good luck

thx - ill try those, Ive made other mpeg files before using this same guide and all went perfectly. - im just not sure why this file wont go...? and as an update i used 8000 kbs and i still had little jumpy squares that seemed to flicker (slowly-like 0.5-1 sec intervals) presumably that seems to me its just not updating its keyframe fast enough - so is there any way to do this - like add more keyframes etc...? and if so will this change or fix the problem? ( i have an understanding of things like keyframes etc... but ive only just bought a dvd burner drive - im outdated - so i've not had to use mpeg files or dvd stuff before...and def. not how to use it all lol)

anyway bring on the advice :) and in the mean time ill check out those other progys....

Here's my update - ive now tried all three mentioned software, but they all give the same result - blocky messed up encoding (the orignal AVI plays wonderfully).

also DVDSanta and VSO DvxTodvd went straight to VOB files etc... i really wanted mpeg files so i could play with menus abit...

so thanks for your effort but it didnt help me.. anyone else have a solution as to why my AVI is crap after encoding?
