Problem burning DVD-R and DVD-RW discs

I have had a recurring problem with successive LG GSA4163B and GSA4165B dvd recorders - they seem to write DVD+ discs without a problem using shrink/decrypter but whenever a DVD- disc is used they get stuck on 0% writing everytime even though they are supposed to be able to write every type of disc apart from DVD-R DL.

Make sure the firmware is current for both your drives.

With my limited knowlege I answer this..booktyping is when your burner can change DVD+R into DVD-R writeable discs, I know it can be done but I have never attempted it as I only use the +R format which works in all my players. I will stand corrected if I am wrong. Cheers If and when Creaky reads this he will set you straight

yup, booktyping is only for + format discs (i'll let mort81 or on or the others describe booktyping - they love all that stuff lol).

as to the 4163B i do indeed have that sexy drive and it's fine with both - and + formats.

while it's on my mind, what speed are you trying. whenever i try to do 8x on my 4167B all burns fail at the lead-in stage with 'invalid block address'. anyway this drive does 4x perfectly and i only do 4x myself, have been experimnting doing 8x as i've found my 4163B does 8x perfectly. the media i use is Verbatim TYG02 and also Verbatim Datalifeplus 8x -R and +R (i love Verbatim, can't you tell!)

now to those specific discs you've listed... -

I've uninstalled iTunes and deleted the Gear dll and driver files then tried burning at 1x on the Sony DVD-RW (got stuck on lead-in) and again had exactly the same problem when burning at 4x on one of my Ritek G05 DVD-R discs.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway - it was worth a try. Is there anything else you can see in the Info output that could be causing a problem? The other ASPI drivers seem to be ok but I'm not sure even though InfoTool is saying they're working alright.

You're close on what it means to booktype except that you booktype a DVD+R to dvd-rom not to DVD-R. Only +r media can be booktyped/bitset.
