I've been reading a ton of posts of peeps having trouble with the ritek dual layer media.
I have no trouble with the verbatim +2.4x dl and not many posts of problems with these verbs.

I tried 15 of the Ritek DVD+R DL and had 100% success. I've used about 75 of the Verbatim DVD+R DL so far, and I like them much more .. the scans are a lot better and they just 'feel' better to the touch .. besides, I just plain like the Verbatim discs be they +R or +R DL .. besides, the DVD+R DL 2,4x will burn at 8x (with excellent scans) on my BenQ DW1640

I tried the inkjet printable Riteks and burning them at 2.4 times still resulted in high error scans. The picture even froze when playing them on a set top DVD player. I had 100% success with the verbatim inkjets DL media with excellent scans. I tried the media in the Pioneer A09 and Plextor 716 DVD burners with the same results

here i am, chimin' in~ :)

well, i too have had about 30 Ritek Ridata DVD+R dls with 100% success as well, but, i too PREFER the Verbatim MKM001's as my CHOICE of THE BEST for DVD+R DL media~ :)

i just recently tried my backup of "Batman Begins" on my PICKIEST of stand alone dvd players, the Denon dvd5900 unit, played fine for a good 40-45 min. or so, then i noticed a "skip" ever so slightly on the Ritek DL burn...just to double check, i took the disc out and put it in my 5-disc carosel Panasonic dvd player...fast forwarded to the part i experienced the "skip"...and BAM...played through flawlessly and i watched the rest of the movie with absolutely ZERO problems...so, basically, my conclusion is...Ritek Ridata DVD+R DLs WILL play in most conventional stand alones with no problems (i naturally have booktyped ALL my DVD+R and DVD+R DL media) assuming you are burning them correctly, i just have a VERY VERY picky dvd player that is having issues on the DVD+R DL media :) this even happens on my Verbatim DVD+R DL with that Denon player...sometimes, but not often~

i will not knock the Ridata DVD+R DL media because i do not consider this "test" disc a "coaster"...it plays fine on my computer, and my other 3 stand alone players, just the Denon is a lil "bi&ch" about DVD+R DL discs, regardless of who manufacturers them~ :)

this is a good price for the Ritek DLs, i would recommend them for the price..but, if i HAD a choice for DVD+R DL media, i would definitely recommend the Verbatim DVD+R DL (made in singapore) as my 1st choice~ :)

you just have to find out which ones work for YOUR OWN stand alone players, Verbatim DLs i've had "less" issues, got about 50+ of those under my belt now...tried and tested, Verbatim is my "money maker"~

FLAWLESS VICTORY~ Verbatim wins...~ LOL

I've thus far burned about 25 Ritek DLs and maybe 10 Verbs. No problems with any of them, at least not in my Sony 5-disc player or Philips DVP642. Actually, I did get one bad Ritek burn, but that was using Nero and burning from the VIDEO_TS folder (after VobBlanking my butt off first). In other words, my fault. I made an image out of the folder and burned with ImgBurn and it worked fine.

Still, I'd go straight Verb if their inkjet-printable DLs were anywhere near as cheap as Ritek's. I can't stop buying the Ritek's at Newegg, the prices are just too cheap.

@mrchub

those prices are VERY good @ newegg for the Ritek DLs...i purchased them a little while ago (less than a week ago) when they were @ $49.99 for the 25 pack, still a good price, but i just noticed the $15 price drop since then, thanks to you...so, i'm going to hold off a bit now, it's just ME, i get all pissed off when i purchase something like a week ago and then the following week the price drops another $15~ and you KNOW newegg won't pricematch their own product you happened to purchase only a week ago, yes, i've tried and was blatantly DENIED the difference~ :)

pricing for dvd media changes so frequently it's kinda like playing roulette, one day you find a GREAT deal (lucky streak) and the next it gets even better~! so, if you REALLY need some DL media, you will have to take the chance of the price going down once AGAIN in the future, i have just recently been "burned" with this price drop, so, buy DL media with some discretion~ :)

Seeing as your benq is accepting those ritek dls,Then I shouldn't worry about running into them.

kivory666, yes, that's always the question, isn't it? When to stock up, and with what. I look at it this way: DLs didn't drop in price significantly for a very long time, and though newegg goes up and down with those Ritek inkjets/non-inkjets (e.g., free 3-day vs non-free, the so-called "weekend sale," combo deals, etc.) all the time, the good news is that even when they're not on sale at least they're not 6 freaking dollars apiece, as they used to be regardless of maker. As I write this the inkjet printables are at 38.99 plus 4 plus the 24-disc wallet (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817132395). By Monday it might be 35.99 plus free shipping plus the 5+1 combo pack. Then again, it might be something else entirely.

I've got about 15 Ritek inkjets left and almost pulled the trigger on another 25, but I'm thinking that the Verb inkjets might drop to an average of 2 bucks apiece very soon. If so there's no turning back (and, strangely, at a time when Verb single-layer discs are being questioned because of rumors of their switching manufacturers). Unfortunately neither Ritek nor Verbatim make a hub-printable DL disc yet, but that's got to be coming.

All I know is now I no longer have to go through Elaine's "spongeworthy" test in order to determine if a backup goes onto one of my precious $6 DL blanks ;-)

BTW, TY doesn't make DL discs at all??

@mrchub

very good evaluation of DL media buying habits :) you are completely correct, yes, DL media, regardless of "Brand" has dropped significantly in price, but it's just a "pet-peve" of mine when i order something and the VERY NEXT week they drop by $15~ :)

the fluctuation of media prices will always be apparent in the ever growing market, so, nothing is ever a "constant"...but, i hope this downward trend of pricing continues with DL media...it will probably bottom out @ $1/each by this time next year, something along the lines...but, who really knows? that's just MY "guesstimate" on the prices of DL within a years time~

and as per your last question, i actually contacted my TY rep. in North America corporate and she told me "at this present time TY does not seem to be pursuing the production/manufacturing of DL media in the near future"...but you can expect the 16x DVD+R single layer TYs to be out early next year...hehe, YUDEN000T03 coding~ :) should be VERY good stuff...i was saddened by this as you can probably imagine, but i've been very pleased with MY "made in singapore" Verbatim DVD+R DLs as well as my "made in taiwan" Ritek Ridata logo'd DVD+R DLs too~ :) can't say i've had a LOT of experience with DLs, but, we all live and learn...so far so good, i'm sticking with what i KNOW works for me... :)

good day to you

kivory666,

I contacted TY North America once (first tried my regional office, I believe in San Jose, then was referred to what I think was corporate in Chicago or thereabouts) regarding fake TYs and how to avoid them, and got an immediate response from a woman named Chika Nakatsuka. Very helpful, though she could only guarantee legit TYs through their one "official" NA supplier, discmakers.com. Since they weren't as competitive as Rima and Supermediastore I never ordered, but nice to know where you can be absolutely sure to get real TYs in a pinch.

You're likely right on the DL pricing, though I'm at the point where I'm almost OK with it now if the Ritek's prove to be good discs. On the downside, many people bitch about Memorex DLs, and if I'm not mistaken they share the same Ritek media code as these newegg discs.

Personally I believe most DL burning trouble is firmware/hardware/software related, not the discs themselves, and I say that since (as mentioned above) the only bad burn I've had was when I didn't do what I'd been advised to do (i.e., I used Nero instead of burning from an image). I also tend to screw around with deleting a lot of stuff using VobBlanker and MenuEdit, so I'm prepared to suffer a coaster or two if I make a mistake.

My NEC 2510A loves dual-layer discs, so long as I do it right. I have to admit, however, that when I do burn DL discs I actually think I tread more lightly in my apartment...probably paranoia but I keep thinking the burning process is so delicate that if I fart sideways I'll get a coaster ;-)

$1 apiece would be wonderful, of course, but if it does take a year, as you suggest, we'll then be on the cusp of the Bluray/HD-DVD clusterf*ck. Not that it will make any sense at all to invest in a burner and blanks for either of those for probably 2-3 years, but it's still difficult to think about straight dvd backups when you know true HD stuff is right around the corner.

Nonetheless, a real movie hobbyist will want to invest in a good burner and printer for awhile to come. Plus, with an HBO subscription and a high def cable box you can make your own Rome dvds within days of their broadcast (and completely legally, I might add). How much does it piss me off that season two of Deadwood (IMHO the best drama ever on TV) has been completed for months and yet still doesn't even have a dvd release date? Oh shit, now I've gotten myself all riled up ;-)

wow, you sure have it good over there~ :) yes...the local OFFICE MAX store here is actually pretty far, gotta take the freeway to get there~ :)

when i put in MY zip code on officemax website, there IS a limit of 1 per person..i tried to add like 20 spindles in there, but their system automatically reverts it back to "quantity: 1" :)

i guess it's diff. for people around the U.S...just my luck huh? LOL

i have a friend who got some for me, outta state of course, so, i'm good to go in that dept...no worries...but thank you for the tips/advice.

@thelox714

yah, i have friends that live down in LB...but, they are not as "media excessive" as i am...so, they not gonna partake of this Verbatim DL sale~ they gonna regret it when they ask me for a copy of something i own...as i'm gonna give them the line, "well, you should have done me the favor of getting them for me...now i don't have any media to burn you a copy on..." LOL make them feel bad/guilty~

reverse psychology...it works a charm my friend...
