Hey all,

I recently purchased a 15 pack of Memorex DL 2.4x DVD+R from Amazon ($30).

However, upon loading the disc into my NEC-3520A burner (I have the latest firmware from NEC btw) I get a msg indicating the DVD is a CD-R? What gives? Even Nero reads it as a CD-R.

Am I experiencing a software or hardware related issue?

JonMan888 hi :)
from what i can find ,your drive supports -R D/L not +R D/L media
i think you will find that the disc's you have are RITEK D01 +R D/L
download DVD Identifier from the link in my sig below . put your disc through it and we will know the ID

gurnard,

Thanks for the reply, I d/l'ed DVD Identifier but yet, it cannot identify my DVD (no pun intended). Maybe I should get a BenQ drive instead? Will that recognize the DVD? I've been meaning to get a new burner anyway.

Hi there,

What version of Nero are you using ?

Latest is v6.6.0.16

Even if it says it's a CD-R, did you try burning one, see what it does ?

I know, Dual Layer media are not cheap, this is why I haven't even seen a Dual Layer in my hands yet ! :)

v3.06 is the latest firmware on your drive, that's what you have right ?

Cougar,

Yes I've upgraded to the latest firmware (3.06). I currently have Nero v 6.3.0 (would that make a difference?)

I tried burning something before but Nero picked up the disc as being a "CD-R" so therefore I was not able to backup anything.

JonMan888 hi :)
yes after a reread (and asking a friend) your drive does d/l + and needs the firmware update to allow d/l - as cougar_ii has pointed out.
i have used 12 RitekD01 D/L +r so far bitset to -rom.
i only use DVD Decrypter in the read then write mode .
i have read on here that Nero doesn't handle the layer break very well, where as decrypter does.(perhaps if you try decrypter)
my friend also jogged my memory by saying perhaps it is a duff batch.
i remember once, about 6mths ago, that i had exactly the same msg. on one of my dvd's can't remember whether it was a G04 or a GO5.
anyway as you can see i only use Ritek media so it had to be one of theirs. i put it down to some joker in the factory slipping it into a spindle because all the rest were ok.
have you tried the others to see if they are ok

Gurnard,

Thanks!!! It worked. I used DVD Decrypter in Read/Write and worked like ac harm. Apparently my burner will burn but not read DVD+R DL discs. Weird, but I guess it'll do for now.

Much thanks to everyone!

Cheers,
Jon

nicely done gurnard... :)

dvd decrypter is THE way to burn onto Ritek DLs...i had a prob. w/ Nero right at the layer break when i tried my first DL a few months ago...decrypter handles it just fine...also, firmware, at least for DL burns in MY OWN experience makes a KEY difference in the end result...make sure it's up to date, burn @2.4x IF the higher speeds give you trouble...

mr. Ritek, i commend you~ :)
