I'm having an awful time with my 50 pack of TDK DVD-R media. I used DVD Identifier and they are TTG02, which according to http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm are the in the top tier of quality media. So, far I've burned 24 discs and gotten 11 coasters, maybe more, some of the movies I've burned haven't even been watched. I'm using DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter along with a Sony DRU-530A with firmware 2.1g

Sometimes I use Sony DVD+R's and they don't have as many problems. DVD Identifier says they are Taiyo Yuden. They've only produced 1 coaster out of 10.

I didn't even get this many coasters using Memorex(though they were +R's).

I also just upgraded to the new burner firmware right before I started using this media.

Any direction would be appreciated.

thanks

You have discovered that TDK produced media is not as good as some websites may lead you to believe. This subject has been covered in several other threads here at After Dawn, and the concensus has always been that TDK is not very dependable .. sometimes you can find 'em made by Taiyo Yuden and most of the time they're made by TDK and those aren't very good.

I recommend that you stick to the Japanese made +R Sony discs that you've had success with ... and if you care to shop some sales .. Japanese made +R Fuji are the same as Japanese made +R Sony .. ALSO, all Verbatim are top notch as well as Japanese made Maxell.

I guess that the bottom line is either buy Japanese made discs or buy Verbatim ...

i have expressed my hatred towards TDK's own manufactured media MANY MANY MANY times on AfterDawn, so, i will not restate my opinions again...doing a simply search you will find my name associated with the bashing of TDK~ :)

anyways, TDKs SUCK~!! (in my opinion), and don't ALWAYS go by these so called "media rating" websites, make your decision based on USER EXPERIENCE, not by what some guy "says is good and what is bad" on a website~ :)

the Taiyo Yuden ones are 1000x's better...stick with those as MY Sony drives LOVE TY media...and Verbatim is right there to pick up where Taiyo Yuden left off as well...i have the Sony Dru-710a, which is in fact a rebadged Liteon SOHW-1633S, i believe YOURS is a rebadged Liteon as well~ stick with Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim...you REALLY should dump those crappy TDK TTGO2s...they really suck~ :)

good luck~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I have the same problem with TDK and even so my burner seems out of date in terms of firmware, I believe that even after the update I will still have wasting of destroyed TDK discs. So irritating! Because you expect the brand name to reflect functionality! So stupid.
Im also quite far from a big city to buy DVDR frequently so now Im stuck with 19 TDK discs with no success at all! Its my luck I guess!! :)

Im off to do the update... wish me luck :)

Take care
