Recently I Emailed Verbatim asking them what, if any, the difference between the DataLifePlus and the regular Verbatim DVDs was. The answer I received was as follows:
Quote:
The use of the name "DataLifePlus" has drooped and all Verbatim brand DVD
media is now called "Verbatim" DVD.
The media itself has not changed.
So .. if you really like the 'DataLifePlus', you better buy 'em before they disappear totally ...

i'm getting involved in as many cdfreaks media threads as i can as i keep hearing that Verbatim may be going the way of other companies. I can see my spending lots of money each month buying up Verbatim TYG02 to keep me sorted for the future in case the other Verb's go to pot.

Actually, Verbatim abandoned the Datalife Plus over a year ago because it was confusing customers who bought Verbatim without the Datalife Plus stamp and thought they were getting an inferior product. Supposedly, all their DVD media used the Metal Azo technology, another marketing gimmick. I have to believe any Datalife Plus out there now is old stock, and I have no idea about shelf life. Just like with CD media, it's going to get harder to find quality media with the profit margins so small. Everyone is outsourcing to the cheapest manufacturer they can find. Fuji went from Taiyo Yuden to Prodisc, and they expect the quality to be the same? It's really sad now that Verbatim is heading down the same path to mediocrity. My motto: Trust no one. The truth is out there.

@Dogbomb, hope yu don't mind, i'm gonna copy/paste yours and my comments from this thread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/252452 into catfreak's thread, as it's better suited to this thread....
@catfreak - hope this adds TO your thread, hope you don't mind...

I'm personally boycotting all Verbatim media, and I urge you to do so too. Verbatim spent the last few years rebuilding its image as a reliable distributer of quality media, but once again, unable to resist the temptation of higher profit margins, they are outsourcing to CMC, Moser Baer, and Prodisc - shipping the same garbage that Memorex has been. You think you're buying discs made by Verbatim just because it has the MCC manufacturer ID code? Well, they are probably made by Prodisc and CMC now with the MCC tag. Screw Verbatim. I'm only buying Fuji 'Made in Japan' and ordering Taiyo Yuden discs from now on.

@Dogbomb - i keep reading that kind of thing over at cdfreaks. I've been very lucky with all my Verbs but it does sound like Verbatim are playing silly games. As much as i love Verbs if i get stung i'll drop them like hot embers and go TY myself. Until then i'm buying up as much Verbatim TYG02 as i can afford, just in case.

i'm getting involved in as many Verbatim threads as i can over at cdfreaks..

ps i'm sure i've been reading murmurs of Maxell using CMC too, for some discs, can't remember exact details, or was it Fuji. i think it was Maxell...

creaky, it's old news at cdfreaks that Verbatim has been outsourcing to other manufacturers, so you probably knew all of this already. It was recent news to me. Fuji already switched to Prodisc last year. Given that the prices for DVD media has dropped from $3 about 2 years to 30 cents a piece now, you knew they would start to cut corners by switching to cheaper makers. Believe it or not, I used to love Memorex because it was cheap and reliable. That was when they were stamped RICOHJPN. Now, you hear all these complaints about Memorex because they've switched to CMC, Infodisc, Moser Baer, and every cheap manufacturer they can find. It's happened to Verbatim now. I'm already reading a bunch of complaints about Fuji, and for someone not following the different manufacturers they outsource to, you'd have to think anyone making coasters with Fuji's Taiyo Yuden media was not burning DVDs correctly. That is until you find out they are made by Prodisc. I already have a few spindles left of Verbatims, so I'm in no hurry to stock up. But if I do ever see old 4X RICOHJPNs or Fuji TYs on the shelf, I'm going to stock up and worry about shelf life later.

@Dogbomb, i only hear whispers here and there, so this last week have started subscribing to cdfreaks threads more often. i've been a member there only since Feb this year but rarely post even though i've been reading stuff from there for many years. i have stayed away since actually joining up mainly due to their love of CMC, and in some of my few posts last week i got slammed a few times. That could also be because i'm fairly unknown there, and a 'junior member' or maybe i'm being 'initiated' as a new boy. Some of their senior member are ultra-defensive about CMC - all i say over there is that we over at AD see endless CMC-related problems, but you can't say that over at cdfreaks lol.

anyway, i've just done a stock take of my Verb tubs (Verb TYG02) - i got 56 tubs of 25 therefore 1400 in stock at the moment, might buy some more for the next couple paydays, that should be enough for a while.

that's why i've been hanging out around cdfreaks, to see what i can figure out. there's lots of talk of that rebranding going on already, but i don't believe all of what i read over there. it is damn worrying though..

They should be coded accordingly. Verbatim has used cmags in the past and they coded as cmags.

Easily to tell MCC for CMC codes with your programs unless you are dyslexic, LOL

The worrying will be on country of origin. Verbatim is mostly taiwanese and singapore. The Cmags are taiwanese also,no singapore so far.If it doesn't say data life plus,I will not buy them!My last batch of verbatim data life plus were MCC-004 and the PIE/PIF scans are awesome.

I'll stick with my sony and fuji tys along with my Office Depot riteks.

Edit: I've been seeing dogbomb alerting everbody about those verbatims. He's like a paul revere: Beware the cmags are coming, don't burn till you see the crappy dye in their eyes! LOL

if i'm correct in assuming that ALL current Office Depot discs will code out as Ritek, haven't gotten any for myself as of late, but i believe the office depot brands are 8x DVD-R = RitekG05s, and the 8x DVD+R = RitekR03s...i am fairly certain of this, but not 100%, just wanted to chime in while saugmon is away, if i am wrong about this, please DO correct me saugmon/catfreak~ :)

good day~

That's what I thought until I started reading over at cdfreaks that MCC doesn't necessarily mean Verbatim made them anymore. Over at cdfreaks, they claim that Prodisc and CMC make discs for Verbatim using the MID code "MCC"! And their proof is that the serial #s on the hub of Prodisc brand are identical to Verbatim. I did not mention it here because I don't know how much of this is true, but it seems alot of people over at cdfreaks are aware that Verbatim outsources the manufacturing of their media to guys like Prodisc and CMC yet allows them to use the MCC ID tag. I don't own any Prodiscs so I can't compare serial #s to Verbatims, but it seems plausible.

I only use the plus format, but catfreak turned me onto Office Depot 8x media and both formats are ritek: r03 on the plus and G05 on the dash. Excellent media, and perform as well as my MCC-003 and Yuden000-T02 media.

I burned 400 of the Ritek-r03 OD media and only 1 playback coaster! All burned successfully, but 1 of the discs separated on the inside after a day or two.

All 3 of my benqs will burn anything. Even cmags are no problem, but I encounter more playback issues on them. That cmag error scan shows the difference. No issues with my verbs, yudens, riteks, and maxells.

Catfreak has not let me down yet, LOL

The packaging of the 100 pack Verbatim DVD + Recordable: It says nothing about Data life plus. It's a purple/white label-gold sticker stating Genuine 16x drive certified, and says Advanced AZO. Made in taiwan. That made in taiwan sounded a little fishy. I thought the 16x verb media was made in singapore?

That scan of the MCC004 was the best scan I have ran.The 46 PIF total is way below my average of 200 on my yuden-000-T02 and MCC-003.
