burning coasters with dvd decrypter - please check this post!

hi guys,
+ i have checked several forums, inlcuding this one, in search of an answer as to why i keep churning out coasters when buring ps2 iso's with dvd decrypter. i get "operation sucessfully completed" after each burn, but the game won't boot. i.e., no errors while burning in dvd decrypter!
+ i have checked my media, and it is of good quality (philips 4.7gb). the batch i have is perfectly ok.
+ i have checked my ps2, and it is booting other CDR and DVDR backups (although those DVDR backups were NOT burned on my pc) without any problems at all. boots all backups on the first boot.
+ i have checked the sfv file of the release and no errors were detected.
+ i know burning iso's in dvd decrypter doesn't require you to enter a lot of settings, i have checked the guides available on the net, so i am sure there is no problem with the settings per se. i am burning at a low speed, etc, just like the guides tell you to. despite doing everything "by the book" i get coasters.
so, considering all this, what else could be the problem? is it possible that my dvd burner (nutek and i -beleive- my firmware is up to date) is a piece of shit or are there some other things i should look into before running it over with my car? like, trying some other burning software or checking some settings?
personally, i am pretty sure my dvd burner is to blame, because it has never burned one single dvd properly to date, not a game, a movie, nothing. there has always been some sort of trouble. but i still wish to try some other solutions before coughing up 300-400 bucks on a new burner.

jin,
i am trying to burn the warriors. i have the fulldvd backup including rarfix (iso size is about 4.2 gb). ran pdsfv on all files after downloading and it returned no errors.
any ideas?

erm i dont think you have to pay $400 for a dvd burner, i got a sony one for $50 about £40 in the uk. lol.
and you have just said what your problem is! it's your burner! you said the other disc worked fine when you burned on someones elses computer, but not on yours.
and another thing, always check the ISO for 'dummy files' thses can make the game freeze if you dont have a mod chip.

i was thinking in my local currency, heh :)
well, the other disc that worked on my computer wasn't the same game. so i don't want to draw any conclusions on that point alone.
i doubt this game has a dummy file, but just to be sure i would like to check. is there any guide how to check for dummy files in a iso or could you just explain it to me real quick?

use iso buster, open iso and check folders. i think it's on this website in the downloads.

check folders for what? i have checked and all the files on the dvd match the files in the iso.

sometimes games have folders to seperate data, but in this case it dont, so if there is no dummy files then the image is fine. the only thing you can do is sort out your dvd burner

looks like it! i just attempted to make a backup of a previously burned backup in DVD Decrypter, created the iso and burnt it (according to the guide) and guess what... it didn't boot!
i'm tough outta luck on this one. guess its time to take out the old sledge hammer and give this motherf*cking piece of sh*t a good hit.

Agreed, smash it with a hammer. Only use the best ... Plextor
All of my problems went away when I bought the PX-716a. I'm sure that there are newer models now. Spent the extra $40 dollars on the drive, you won't be let down.

Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R. Use DVD Decrypter. Are you using DVD+R's or DVD-R's? Phillips is okay. You could also try Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, TDK, Maxell, or Sony.

hi tokijin,
as i mentioned earlier, i am using DVD Decrypter. the funny thing is that the program gives me a "operation sucessfully completed" after each burn and i can even view the files on the dvd in windows explorer afterwards. but when i try to boot it... nada!
also, to answer your second question, i am using DVD+R from philips. what is the difference between +r and -r? any of those two better than the other for burning ps2 iso's?
i see that you recommend burning at 4x. some guides recommend burning at the lowest speed possible, while others say half of the maximum speed. what's your take on that?
i hope that your advice will spare the life of my dvd burner, look forward to your feedback!

first of all dont use DVD +R media thats the worst for ps2, and second of all always burn at the lowest speed.

found some other peeps telling me the same thing, i.e. not to use DVD+R. i will pick up some DVD-R discs later and try again.

whoopsie! just got home and checked my discs, they are philips DVD-R and not DVD+R as i initially thought. i reckon this means there are no problems with the media type then???
i will try to burn again, once at 4x and once at 1x. but i doubt it will make any bloody difference. seems like this dvd burner is ready for retirement!

Some people burn at 1x, some people burn at 4x. Neither one is right or wrong per se, just that certain burners work better at certain speed with certain media. It differs from burner to burner. When people say always burn at Speed X, that largely is irrelevant. What works for some people won't necessarily work for others. In general DVD-R's are always better. Some games will skip horribly when burned at 1x, especially FMV heavy games. The burn method that works most commonly for people in these forums from what I've read, is burning at 4x on an 8x DVD-R. This isn't dig at you jalaneme just a fact. Burning at 1x might work for you, it just may not work for everybody. Report back with the results Buchek.

i have always burned at 1x speed ever since i burned a game at 4x speed and it was choppy so i stuck to burning at 1x and a FMV never skipped or anything like that since then.
i have never used cheap nasty media, always quality media, i looked at a lot of websites on what is the best media to burn stuff with, and maxwell came up as a 1 of the good medias to use.
you are right that most burners wont work at 1x speed, but then why do people buy cheap DVD burners? and you wouldn't have this problem? or any other cheap brand make, come on i have heard there is a memorex burner, who would buy this crap?

Lol I agree. They do indeed have Memorex DVD burners, I've seem em at Staple's. They're $90, WHY would anybody buy a Memorex burner when you can pick up a Sony or Liteon for the same price? No reason to buy that garbage when you can get a BenQ 1640 for $40. By all accounts it works as well as the higher price burners at half the price. I bought a 50 pack of Maxell DVD-R's, so glad to hear they worked for you.

Hi mate,sorry if you thought this was some kind of solution,but im having the same type of trouble.the difference is that my writer burns dvds with no trouble at all.but when it comes to ps2 dvd games they say there successful when burnt but dont boot.if you get some kind of reply send us an email.i will send u one too if i fint the solutionmy email is gaa734@hotmail.com

thanks for your reply. last night i bought myself a new dvd-burner (sony DRU-810A for 60 USD), popped in the same philips DVD-R disc again and burnt the iso in DVD Decrypter at 2x. viola! the game booted without any trouble. so, the conclusion is, my nutek burner was a piece of crap and let this be a warning to anyone thinking of buying a crap dvd-burner. i made that mistake, won't happen again.
however... when i was playing the game a bit this morning, i only got as far as past the tutorial on level 1 (coney island), and then the game froze while loading. i will try a couple of more times, perhaps its just a temporary glitch? but i was just wondering, when games do freeze like that, it could be anything right? in this case i can't imagine what, its a straight copy, not a rip, perhaps i should burn it at 4x once again and see if it will make any difference?

You may want to try burning at 1x or 2x as jalaneme suggested. It's not the burner, doubt it's the media, most likely it's the burn speed. What is the max speed of the DVD-R's you purchased. The general rule of thumb is to burn at half the max speed.

i also doubt its the burner or media. as already mentioned, the first burn was done at 2x, so i will try doing it at 1x as well.
my burners maximum speed for DVD-R discs is 16x, so i will also try to burn at 8x as well as 4x and see if there is any difference.
if all efforts fail, i guess its safe to assume there's something wrong with the iso?
