when i come to make a domain name it comes with an error and i cant go to the next setup.

i am quite a newbie at this, will i need any other program to do this.

i already had a belkin router and usb adapter for the pc's and i have a wireless network card for my laptop.

You need a 'workgroup' not a domain.
A workgroup is a network of peer-to-peer hosts.
A domain requires a domain master server, global catalogue server etc. A domain is for 200 (or 2000) hosts, not 2 or 3.
Just setup all your PCs to the same workgroup name, and with WinXP simple file sharing your LAN will be up & running easily.
Even under Win2K, PCs had to log-on using client for Micro$oft Networking - but simple filesharing now makes workgroups ridiculously easy :^)
Your router should be DHCP server (will assign network addresses) on your LAN, and when connected to the WWW it will perform network address translation between your LAN and the WWW.
This is known as a NAT firewall, a basic level of security for any PC sheltered behind the router, on the LAN.
Hope this helps.
Hey, if you want a Domain we can do that too... I charge $40/hr (1/2 the going rate) for freelance administration, LoL ;^)
But I think you want a workgroup.

yeah i set up a workgroup first and when i tried to transfer a large file (about 1GB) it took quite a while.

so i thought if i had a domain it would be faster. plus i thought it was quite easy to set up, well Microsoft said it was! ;) read the short articile and thats what it says.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawfo...

since i thought this was fairly easy i then went to:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/getstarted/configc... where it told me to:

"To specify the domain for your computer account

1.
Log on to Windows XP Professional as a user with administrator rights.

2.
Click Start, right?click My Computer, and then click Properties.

3.
On the "Computer Name" tab, click Change.

4.
Select Domain, type the name of the domain to which your computer belongs, and then click OK.

If you don't know the domain name, contact your network administrator.

5.
When prompted, type your domain user name and password, and then click OK.

6.
Click OK when finished. Click OK again to close the Properties window.

Your computer joins the domain, and a message welcoming you to the domain appears.

7.
Restart your computer to apply the new settings.

8.
Log on to the domain with your user name and password.

Note: If your computer account and user account are located in different domains, you must type the user account domain, followed by a backslash (\) and the user name, in the Domain User name and Password dialog box?for example: DOMAINNAME\User name"

it was on step 5 where i got stuck. when i made the domain name it would nt let me.

as i said before.
