I read messages about CMC Mag product being of low quality ( no quibble). I recently picked up a stack of Memorex 16x manuafctured by CMC as it turned out. Trading on their good name it seems. Earlier products have been very good to me. Wish I hadn't bought the new discs because my drives ( but one) can not write to them sucessfully. I have an Aopen DUW1608 that seems to handle them very well. A few coasters here and there. They don't burn anywhere near the suggested 16X. I jumped onto Afterdawn to see what wassup and read a lot of negative info about CMC MAG.

So the question. Once burned, what would cause them to have a short shelf life. Let's say weeks or months. I can buy that they might not get the 40+ years of top quality media. But product that dies on the shelf within days weeks months? Is there data to support this? We all have product we hate. Not loooking for emotion here just the facts

Would like to know before I burn a lot more

I imagine the heat from DVD players would eventually get to most inferior discs because of the cheap dyes they use, especially if it's Princo which use food coloring in place of actual dye. I've also heard of cheap discs not properly sealed which allows air to get in between layers (disc rot).

Pontifex,

"...trading on their good name"? I hate to be the one to break this to you, but Memorex hasn't had a good name in media since the days of cassette tape. Seriously, several years ago, when I used to burn lots of cds, the only brand I ever had any problems with was Memorex. And when it comes to dvds, I don't know that they've ever sold product from a decent manufacturer. When I read that Memorex discs are on sale, whether they be cd/dvd/whatever, I pretend I didn't even see the ad.

Buy TY, you'll be as happy as you can be.

Thanks Gentlemen . Disc rot. Vegetable dye. Sounds grim. Thanks for the info. I downloaded from Afterdawn? ( I think) categories of media rankings and their manufaturers. I don't have it at hand but I do recall that the Memorex discs I was buying two years ago were by one of the higher ranked ( not in the same league as TY). I rarely had problems. I would like to think that when Memorex decided to switch to CMC MAg and go down market that they at least did not go for the vegetable dyers. They have a brand name to think about. I am interested in disk rot and what can be done to mitigate. I rerun my backups quite infrequently. Lack of wear and tear = longer lifespan ? Somewhat?

I've had several cmc-mag backups from a year ago that were so degraded they wouldn't play and were impossible to recopy. The best way to avoid this is to use quality media from the get-go. I wish I had discovered Afterdawn before I made all those memorex back-ups. I have used Taiyo Yuden exclusively since coming here. Have not had a single coaster or any playback problems since.

Thanks for the feedback. Now I am worried about my past backups. I'll have to schedule some time to do a review. And buy some quality media.

I was reading a thread somewhere else and found a thread about how great CMC was....This guy that said he has burned 1000's of CMCmags and had never had a Single problem. I am not a rocket scientist, but I have had problems with the good stuff on occasion.......user error, computer problem....etc...etc. I mean he talks about the absolute cheapest thing he can find, and how great they are....bearing in mind that this guy has been burning DVD's for a lot of years. I maybe mistaken but the technology to backup a DVD has only been open to the public for just a few years.
Just a thought

LOL..there are a "Few of those" guys on here...hey, im not gonna argue with WHAT WORKS FOR THEM, but for the general public, CMC MAG has NOT been successful...

my buddy creaky goes through TONS of Nero log files/day and after all was said and done, a GOOD PORTION of the problems users have STILL point to using crappy discs...CMC MAG namely...after all the tweaking, reconfiguring, firmware updates, burning slower, etc...still unsuccessful...

don't need to be a rocket scientist to realize that after you have gotten your computer/setup to run optimally, that the cause of CONTINUED playback issues is DUE TO CRAPPY MEDIA...

people can argue this point until the cows come home, but it will do NO GOOD, take all the opinions/user experiences u read on here with a grain of salt...heck, even i made coasters when i was first starting out...but, it has been a LOOOONG time since i've made another...and yes, i have THOUSANDs of backups on GOOD QUALITY media under MY belt~ :)

good luck

yup, what my buddy said there, word for word. we all have 'legitimate' coasters , but incredibly few, and virtually always from our own fault.

Over at cdfreaks forum i was recently berated for saying the same thing, that once all the tweaking has been done, it's nearly always CMC discs sat there looking shamed up and the only thing left letting the side down (after all the tweaks i mean). and short of buying a new burner, all that's worth trying next is decent media - it just doesn't cost more to use decent stuff. One of the cdfreaks guys even said that CMC are only seen as crap because they make the most discs so hence we see more of them than anything else (i disagree with that one wholeheartedly, i analyse logs for breakfast, as do many others around here) AND that CMC discs are best suited to NEC burner's AND NEC's firmware is allegedly better equipped to deal with CMC discs than other burners. Now what's that all about..

Morning, Creaky, Doc, long time no see! It's amazing what a difference A little Taiyo Yuden can make eh? My Dad just paid 300$ for 10 DVD's that were a simple slideshow at Mom's funeral. Guess what? Memorex, CMC Mag and with labels on them to beat. First thing I did was back it up on a Ty and let everyone know when theirs quit working I'd make them a GOOD copy. Dad ended up a few dvd's short so I made a few more copies for family members which resulted in Dad offering to go to WallyWorld and buying me some discs. I just thanked him and told him I still had plenty! At least his heart was in the right place!

Some people still don't know any better .. That's why we're here ... To help educate the uninformed masses ...

Also, some otherwise intelligent people swear by Memorex .. while people like me swear at them
