Hey Happy,
Glad u asked this as I encounter the same problem (newbie too). AD's excellent DVD decrypter guide says:
"Note that if you have other than NTFS filesystem, you might have multiple files on your harddrive now, one of them is with extension .DVD and this is the file you need to select"
After using DVD shrink, I get 5 files with an *.IO1, *.IO2, *.IO3 etc and a single *.mds file.
I cannot find an .ISO or or .dvd file to select?
Pls help the Beach & the Piggy!

Check the recordable dvds are quality brands. Using cheap (Memorex, Nexxtech, or Made in Taiwan) and/or buying those 100 discs bundles...usually means they're not good quality to use...
Some brands to consider: ones Made in Japan, Verbatim, Taiyo Yudens, etc... these will minimize errors, for the most part...
Also, make sure when burning a movie, burn at speed that is 4x or lower. Some dvd players can be picky and have a hard time reading discs that are burnt fast.

The guide here for DVD Decrypter is old. When ripping the movie (under Mode/ISO/READ), it will no longer produce a .DVD file, instead, it produces a .MDS file.
When you ripped the movie using Shrink, you may have used the default settings. The default settings I believe, when ripping a movie, it produced a hard disk folder(s). The folders that Shrink copied/produced were: VIDEO_TS and a blank AUDIO_TS.

I have had this problem also. I just added an external hard drive to back up my music and other stuff and when I put the movie on their it saved it as a mds file. I have been using decyrpter to burn the mds with only one bad burn. It came from a verbatim that is all I buy. The bad burn showed it was a dvd rom. When I got the external hard drive I plugged it in and ripped a movie with shrink saved it as an iso file and showed mds file. Is there anything I can do to the hard drive to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance for the help.

My external hard drive is fat32 that is proabably the reason. The is my first time using external hard drives are they stuck using fat32 or is there anyway to get it back to a ntfs system which as stated above causes the mds files. How do I go about doing it changing it to a NTFS format I figured I would have got to choose the format when I started using the hard drive when I unpacked it and started using it and what are the pros and cons. When I added an internal hard drive to my computer I had to format it and I chose NTFS why did the external not let me do that it's got me puzzled. Thanks again

I guess I don't understand your question. You've only created one coaster, you burn from the MDS file, your external HDD is in FAT32.
Even if you change your file system to NTFS, when ripping with DVD Decrypter in ISO mode you are still going to get an MDS file. You want the MDS file to burn from, it contains all the information that tells the burner how to burn the movie.
Here is a link about the conversion if you really feel the need: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/159412
@happypig
Imation fall into the same crap category as the memorex, nexxtech, etc. that thugs121 told you about.
Here is a link for you to read up on some media: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406
@beach3032
thugs121 has you straight...however, you can rip to HDD using either file mode, which will create the VIDEO_TS folder, or ISO read mode, which will give you an ISO image and MDS file.
The ISO read mode is usually reserved for use with double layer burning, in which you choose the MDS file to burn from. It contains the layer break information, think of it as a set of instructions that tells the burner how to burn the movie. But you can open the ISO image in DVD Shrink or Nero Recode for editing if needed.
File mode creates a VIDEO_TS folder to opened with DVD Shrink or Nero recode. After DVD Shrink is through processing the movie it will be sent back to your favorite burning program as an ISO image.

I know I am just use to clicking on the iso file for all these burns. Is there any advantage going to NTFS from FAT32? I do not want to have problems down the road. What is the main difference between the 2 pros and cons. When I rip movies to my internal hard drive with shrink it shows only ISO when I use decyrpter it shows ISO and MDS and when I burn them I always click on the ISO file and have never had burn problems. What would you suggest to do leave it as is? Being a FAT32 will it affect using Clonedvd2 or dvdfabdecyrpter or any ripper out their. Thanks locoeng

The advantage would have to go to an NTFS file system but the choice is your on to change or not to change.
Here is some more reading for you:

Well thats not a very good link, the first one I posted was better.
Anyhoo...DVD Shrink only creates an ISO file. It does this because it does not have a native burn engine, it relies on DVD Decrypter, Nero, Imgburn, etc. to burn the ISO image that is creates.
DVD Decrypter on the other hand is a ripper and a burner, and when you rip in ISO read mode it creates an MDS file because the program assumes that you are going to burn to a DL disc. You choose the MDS file because it contains all the important information on how to burn the file to a DL disc.
