I am trying to decide which DVD-VHS recorder to by with all the bells and whistles, and I am confussed about some issues. First I was trying to keep the price tag of the unit between 200-300$. I was almost going to purchase the Sanyo 1000 when I read something about problems concerning Memorex disk compatability. I have a Sanyo 60$ DVD player and I love it so I was kind of excited about the Sanyo model I picked out until I read the bad feedback. The features I want the most are the ability to convert my many home VHS movies onto disk a I worry some are already degrading. Secondly the ability to have Kodak picture CD ability is also a must, for abvious reasons. What I have saved know are on memorex CD. Now I am reading alot about memorex's poor quality period. What media do you all suggest, and is this Sanyo unit a good buy. I am also concerned about the issue of the need for a Dolby DIgital Decoder, what it does, and the advantages and disavantages of units that have decoders VS ones that don't, what exactly do they do?

When it comes to dvd recorders, seems like some will be great while others are a pc of crap within the same model #. The warranty is critical because of this.

Here's a website, but no feedback on the sanyo 1000,but you can use it to try to find other models and look how people rate them.

If you want to convert your original vhs to dvd: If they have encryption,You are going to have something to pull off the encryption. The dolby digital decoder may do the trick, but I'm not familiar with it.If they have no encryption, then no trouble. That's how I did all my home movies from vhs and 8mm to dvd.

Now the memosux media I can help you on.Memosux is outsourced to many different manufacturers like moser bauer/ricoh/verbatim/cmc-mag/verbatim mcc/etc. The quality varies considerble between those manufacturers. Unfortunantly,c-mags are their majority manufacturer and is on the lower end of the quality spectrum. For the same price of memorex,I can find you something way better, maybe even cheaper. You'll want to find the right media for your recorder,so you may have to try several brands, but the ty and verbatim are some of the best.

Important backups like home vids need the quality media. The cheapo manufacturers discs are breaking down a lot quicker than expected.

This thread will probably be teleported to the right place. Check out the home entertainment forum here at AD under dvd recorders-stand alone recorders for more info.

Edit:
Here's the place you want to check out for your future stand alone recorder:
