If I take my hard drive out of my PS2 and put it back into my computer, would I lose all of my games that were on the hard drive.

The reason I would do this wuld be to put PS2 games on my hard drive through a computer so I could bypass the DNAS. Is this even possible? To use like Decryptor and put the entire game onto the Hard drive via computer expect for the games DNAs?

unfortunately you cant do that. you have to use the ps2 software and rip straight to ps2. havent found a way to hook up to your pc and just move the files over :(

do you guys think that I should just be content with the hard drive and hd loader, or would going through all the trouble of the mem. card exploit be worth it?

The only reason I would do mem. exploit, would be to overright the Dnas on games and to get games on the wouldn't work using the hd loader disk.

I don't really understand how to bypass DNAS games because i don't like to play games online, but as for using hdloader in conjuction with the memory card exploit, i think there is no better way (other than a direct boot from a chip).

If you are talking about using your PC to trasfer games onto your PS2 hdd then it is very easy and probably the best way to transfer your games. There are two very popular apps available to do this: Winhiip and HDL_Dump. These applications also give you the ability to archive the games that you already have on your PS2 HDD to you PC as a .iso image. These apps are available at http://www.console.iscentral.net/ with a membership. Their affiliates are also a great source for tutorials and help with PS2.

Just be sure if you find any cool news out to come back and share it with the folks here at afterdawn :).

I think i remember seeing where people would modify the game for DNAS modification, but you would need to search the forums for that.

Following on from "superstui", Would you loose your Saved games from the HDD, when disconnected from the PS2, then inserted into a PC?

Oh.. No you wouldn't. A PS2 HDD is formatted differently than a PC HDD is. When you install your PS2 HDD, your pc can't even see it. The only way you can browse or modify the contents in the HDD is to use a program like Winhiip or HDL_Dump.

Don't worry, you're games will be safe ;). The only thing that you might have to worry about is using Winhiip and HDL_Dump one right after the other. These apps use different methods for saving games on the HDD so if you use them one after the other, they could corrupt your files.

This isn't really a problem though, more like an FYI. You can use both apps if you like, just not in the same session. After you are done with one, put your HDD back in your PS2 and it will naturally recompile to it's native state. Both apps have the same options and capabilites, so it's just a matter of preference. I suggest trying both of them out to find out which on you like best. If you are concerend about loosing your games, there is an option where you can back up what you have already.

ok, cheers for that. I have one more question...
Is it possible for me to backup my PC hard Drive contents onto the PS2 formatted HDD?
- Im not wanting to do this now, but if my current PC HDD decideds to 'give in', it might be helpful.

I suppose you could, but that would be weird. The only way you could access it would be through Winhiip or like application. You wouldn't be able to browse or access your files unless you extracted them to another drive first. If your computer conkes out on you, you would need to install an OS on another drive to get it working anyways. Installing an OS on your PS2 HDD isn't even an option. It's just not possible without loosing all the files you have on it already.

If you're afraid that your PC is going to give out, you should back up your files. DVD burners are cheaper than ever, especially if you live in the States. Same thing goes for back up hard drives. It would be foolhardy to use your PS2 HDD for backup purposes, you'd just be asking for trouble.

Ok.
Somehow that last message humoured me. LoL.
I definatly wont e doing anything like that with my PS2 HDD then.
As for the backing up... i really dont have anything on my PC HDD worth backing up. All the stuff i have on it isnt worth the hassle.

Thankyou for your Answer!

Thanks for the information.

By using Winhiip etc., and being able to see the contents on my PS2 HD through the computer, what would be the advantage of that? Would I then, through Winhip, etc. be able to put games on my PS2 Hd that would not go on through Hd loader? Would I be able to put emulators on my PS2 Hd that way? Would I be able to bypass the DNAS check when putting the game on?

Thanks

To answer your most important question, there is no way to play online with games that are on your hdd (with the exception of the FF game that comes on some of the original hdd's). There is simply no way to bypass the dnas check, because most of it happens online.

Not to be rude, but I have heard otherwise.

If a put a PS2 game onto my hard drive through the computer using winhiip or some other program, I have heard that can can "patch" the DNAS so that when you put the game on the hard drive, it leaves out the "DNAS check"

Thanks for everyone's help

Well Winhiip is really nice because you can do things so quickly. If you need to pack say 20 games, it would take forever using your ps2 alone. Using your dvd drive and an app like Winhiip makes things go around 5x faster.

There are some games that are DVD-9 or dual layer that you cannot install with your Playstation. HDLoader can only read the first layer, so you'll end up with a huge file that doesn't work. You can use winhiip to install these games to your PS2, but unless you have a patched version of HDLoader that can read Dual Layer games, you would need to patch the game itself on your PC before installing.

As for emulators, they need to be installed by other means. Same thing with media files like music or movies. You can use launchelf and copy the files through its browser from whatever media you choose. The only problem i had with mine is that i could only transfer 30 files at a time without the ps2 deadlocking me. This was for a v9 and v4 that i worked on. So if you want to play all 5 billion snes games, transfering this way takes forever.

The best way to transfer files is through an ftp i think. It is EXTREMELY SLOW, but atleast you can leave your PS2 alone during the process.

how would I get my PS2 to be able to read a patched version of Hd Loader if I don't have a mod or a FTP? Would I have to do them mem. exploit, even though I have the original Hd loader?

There's just one problem with that... Your network card turns off if your HDD starts running...

oh bummer.

Would I be able to put my HD into my computer, then, using Winhip, put on a "patched" PS2 game, put the hard drive back into my PS2 and use the Original Hd Loader to be able to play it?

I think that was why Winhiip was created actually. There are some games that you have to do this to get to work. You don't have to use an original HDLoader either. There are patched versions available that play games differently. Also the patched version allow you to use harddrive bigger than the 130 gigs, or something, that an unpatched HDLoader limits you on.

These are all the benefits of running the memory card exploit. You can try different loaders and keep up with the scene as it changes. If you buy hdloader, you can't run these patched versions unless you have a chipped ps2 or something that can play burned cds.

So, because I have no way of playing back-ups besides using my HD and the original hd loader, I have no use of getting and using winhip? Unless I use mem. exploit process?

I have a question. I have the final fantasy sony hd (40 gig). I deleted ff off of it, and used winhiip or however you spell it. Now, my question is... is there a way to boot the hard drive without an original HDloader disc. I've read some forums that said it wasn't possible, but final fantasy runs off the hard drive without any disc. Or you can run the play online app from the hard drive directly with no disc. So is there a way through winhiip to patch the hard drive to boot up, with no disc. Run back-ups off the HD. There has to be some sort of way. If anyone finds out, let me know!!

p.s. I have swap magic and its a pain to do all the work, when I have an available hd.... : )~

p.s.s. Is there a way to rebuild the hdloader disc, and swap magic it?

Well you can still use it if it makes things easier for you. It's all about convenience i guess. There are games like god of war and gran turismo that you have no other way of installing unless you patch them and use a program like winhiip to install. The patches that you would use on the game will work if you have an original HDLoader or HDAdvance cd.

Viewing installed games through a network is currently not available with winhiip. HDL dump GUI does allow for this feature though. This program is almost exactly the same as winhiip and I have read on several forums that some people prefer it to winhiip. If you want to view, install, or edit games HDL dump can handel it. You would need to run an ftp on your PS2 and then connect to it with the program.

I did try this when the program came out, and it ruined all my games... Yeah, so if you want to give it a shot, go for it. Just be sure that you have backups.

As far as i know, It is not possible even if you are using a PS2 hard drive. Unless you have a japanese PS2... soon after the xbox came out, sony made their own dashboard oriented browser with hdd access. Their browser allows you to install your own mp3 and dvd videos. And of course the big plus, you have your application launcher.

Unless you have a JAP ps2, it's not possible. If any one wants more information on this, just PM and i'll make a thread on it.

You could boot HDLoader off a cd if you want. Just use swap magic to play it. You shouldn't have any problems.

There is a way to boot HDLoader without a disc or a memory card exploit, a mod chip does it. DMS4PRO is the best for this, I think. You can store HDLOriginal, HDLPatched, ToxicOS code-core HDL, and a bunch of other stuff.

Oh, well that's just cheating :P

I do a direct boot for my Matrix Infinity Chip also. I will look for a boot file that i place in the hard drive myself. It's called Dev mode2. I'm pretty sure that DMS is much nicer though. They have their own OS and everything. Mine just boots into a basic loader.
