i got a fliptop recently, and after installing it my ps2 is now "racist" or something lol. It'll play some games perfectly, or not even read any games at all, i dont think its an issue with the CDs, since i tested them on my cousin's ps2 and they worked perfectly. First, it'll read the game, and then pass the "PS2" screen, after it'll either:

1. load the game
2. start spinning fast, making a sound ( like a helicopter sound :\ ) and not even loading at all.

if it helps i tested out these games ( both new and old )

FF X - worked perfectly
DDR Extreme 2 - worked perfectly, except for its extra demo mode
Gundam : Encounters in Space - didnt even load
Gundam : Zeta Gundam vs. Mobile Suit Gundam - didnt load
Soul Calibur III : didnt load

if anyone has had a similar problem, or may know of a way to fix it, please tell -thanks

edit: if it helps, the sliding tray gets stuck when the flip top cover is down, but when i open it the sliding tray opens perfectly.

Is the flip top on tight enough? This can be caused by screws being loose on the bottom. A lot of the flip tops are poorly manufactured. Try placing a little pressure on top of the flip top while the game is spinning. If this doesn't help, try reinstalling it. Also what kind of DVD-R's are you using and what speed are you burning at?

That could be a sign the laser is dirty or scratched. Try cleaning it with a Q tip and rubbing Alcohol, should be easy since you have a flip top.

alright, i cleaned it with the alcohol and the q-tip..right at the point where it goes from the "ps2" logo screen and going to the game, the analog light on the controller lights up and then it starts making that buzzing sound ( i tried this with a game that doesnt work )and stops loading.

Is your disc scratched or dirty. Try creating a backup of the game in question, I can't tell exactly from your posts, you have some way of booting backups like Swap Magic or a modchip?

yes, i use swap magic (newest version) and the backups have the same issues as well

[ ex. for my Radiata Stories Backup it'll play perfectly fine in story modes, but when it goes into battles it'll freeze with that buzzing sound - when tried on another ps2, it'll work without any problems]

sorry if my posts are unclear, anyway the disk i tested was a completely new copy of Soul Calibur III, and it doesnt work but worked on another ps2 ( stated in the first post ). I also tested it with a really scratched up Final Fantasy X CD, and works perfectly. i'll try making a backup of it to see if it'll work.

Make sure you use good media for your backups. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, TDK, Maxell, Sony, or Phillips DVD-R's.

I'm having the same problem with soul calibur 3. The ps2 sounds like it's getting ready to take off! I hope it's not hurting it...but it makes a loud helicopter-blade type of noise with Soul calibur on Fugifilm 8x DVD+R. Interestingly, the ps2 makes the same noise with a purchased Lock stock and two smoking barrels movie, and will not play. I'm guessing this is a hardware problem? I tried tightening my flip top and loosening it as well. I realize the flip top is cheap...but my other burned movies/games seem to work just fine. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Try it on DVD-R's. They have better compatiblity with the PS2. DVD+R's will work with newer PS2's, but it's almost always better to use DVD-R's. Try a quality DVD-R. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, TDK, Maxell, Sony, or Phillips. There are a lot of poorly made flip tops. Mine was horribly off center, causing my disc tray to eject at nearly a 45 degree angle (okay exaggeration, but it was badly off center). I got rid of mine in favor of a chip.

Thanks for the advice Tokijin. I found out from somewhere on this site that some flip-tops may actually get in the way of the laser with big games. The cheap flip-top is in the way when the laser tries to get to the outside of the dvd. All I needed to do was loosen the back screws on the ps2 and slightly lift the lid a hair, allowing the laser to slip under the extrusive cover part. Easy fix to be able to play any game now. I took everyone's advice and got some good media. My version 4 ps2 will play Sony 8x, Fugifilm 8x, and Phillips 8x DVD+R. DVD-R will also play in my ps2 but I don't have a compatible burner. DVD-R was only tested once but I assume it would work all the time. Hope I helped someone w/ the same problem.
