verbatum discs.... I know about burn at 4x only ... but....I wanted to do some quick burns for the kids ( 4 kids and a whole whack of movies... each kid "MUST" have his own...LOL)
I know Im going to hear lots of "burn at 4x or less", but please look beond that and listen to my question......I only have the option of 4 or 8x on my software(shrink/nero...using good 8x verbatum discs and an LG writer ) now quality isnt as important, but I dont want freezing....
I did a bunch at 8x and most come out clean (80%), but the few that didnt freeze ,froze at the last 10 minutes of the movie???
(not always in the exact same spot but in that last area of the disc) .... my thoughts are this...
I have done some trial and error... At 4300 meg size they froze at about 15 min before the end... at 4200 they froze at 10 min before the end...
since its at the end of the disk it should be a media problem right(mixed with the speed of course) ... if I did it in movie only mode and put the disc to 4000meg that should stay far away from the disc edge.....
Remember this is for kids discs so quality is not as inportant ... am I on the right track of thinking its and edge problem since it freezes in the last 10 minutes??? Thanks for listening to my ramble. todd

With good media and target size set at 4300 in shrink you should not be burning to close to the edge. I can only surmize that the speed of burn is the issue. Your LG is a great burner (I have one too). I can't imagine that the difference in time of burn from 14 minutes at 4x to the 7 or 8 minutes at 8x will make that much difference to the kids.
Slow down the burn and save some of those good verbs from death.

9mmruger1 is right if you reset your size and still have the problem it is not the edge. Since your disk burns from inner to outer edge it is burning faster by the time it gets to the end, try a slower speed as suggested and make sure the firmware on the burner is current.

Makes complete sense(and less coasters too!
Ok the burn time is not much of an issue at the 10-15 minutes, but the encoding at 30 min is long isnt it? I dont know what that is yet, but can that be shortened?

You might be able to shorten time with CloneDVD and AnyDVD, but I am not sure by how much, maybe 7 or 8 minutes less overall. This is just one of those processes that do take time, so I just do something else while ripping and burning.

As suggested, with good media you shouldn't have to set the target size to less than 4350 mb (and verbatum in most cases is good media). If you are still experiencing freezing problems, the target size is 4350 or less, you are burning at 4x or less, you are useing good media and your f/w is current you might consider booktying dvd+r media to dvd-rom to increase compatability if your burner is capable of doing so.

Im doing alot of reading on the subject of burning ... but I could use some help ... could you give me some details of what booktyping is and what your talking about in newbie terms?

Here's a good read about booktyping/bitsetting http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150
I don't know if your dvdrw drive is capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom (some LG drives are and some aren't). One way to find out is when you use shrink, make sure enable burn with Nero is checked then after you click backup click on burn settings and if booktype dvd-rom is not grayed out check it and your burns should be booktyped dvd-rom. If the booktype dvd-rom is grayed out then your drive is most likely not capable of booktyping/bitsetting. You can only booktype DVD+R media not DVD-R media to dvd-rom.

if the burn speed is not an issue try using clonedvd2 & AnyDVD i have no problems yet. (knocks on wood)
burn speed is set auto.
there is always a better solution

HOW LONG/MANY DISCS HAVE YOU DONE (sorry) with this program/what is the burn speed? (give me some times of your encodings/burns/ect ***on fly or from hard drive? *** and does it suppot windows ME?( I can look that one up...

Only thing is I dont use + discs because the kids play them on their xbox which only reads -r discs ....
Im wondering if these boxes were checked when I was burning -r discs(which they were) if it would cause any problems or slower speeds???? anyone know for sure???

I would try a couple good quality DVD+R discs and booktype them dvd-rom. Dvd-rom is the same booktype that original pressed dvd's are.

The booktype to dvd-rom setting will have no affect on DVD-R media.

done about 107 burns with maybe 1 coaster with TY's and the progs i mentioned earlier, as for the settings everything is in the anyDVD options and speaks for itself, you can try it for 21 days, not sure if it supports ME, do you plan on upgrading anytime soon on the OS??

Clonedvd will most likely improve the quality of the backups but not likely to improve the compatability (freezing) problems you are having.

i'm new to this forum but i was just browsing to see if i could find some answers to my problem and seen that your dvd's freeze up at different points thru the movie the problem could be the xbox i had the same issue with my ps2 i quit using it and the movies played perfectly in a normal dvd player

the console will most definately be a factor in freezing when u play backups in them, then again some people dont have those probs.
stand alones (be it a new one) will 99.9% recognize them, then again there is that .1%
there is always a better solution

well one thing about the x box is that if it plays them flawlessly, then you can be almost 100% sure it will play on ANY dvd player flawlessly! LOL......
Ok for those of you looking for speed......
I had about 30 blank "memorex" dvds left in my pile of shit!!!
so .......... I found a way to speed things up and make perfect movies with them......... (quality is slightly affected, but.......
not 2 much.
obviously if you burn the "movie only" instead of the "whole disc" you are going to get a picture that is better right? Well if the picture is ok for you on the "whole disc" burn then try this with your crap discs before you use them to play frisbee with the dog....
(decriptor/shrink/nero) use shrink,..set it to 4000mb reauthour to your movie only option ..... and burn to your hard drive at that size.... when you are done look at your files... notice anything???
there are only 8 files instead of 9 .... one less vob file.....
this must really shorten the time of the burn because it only took me 20 min to burn my movie (from the second I pushed the "back up" button in shrink... through the encoding and the nero burn....) @ ***4x***! and Im actually very happy with the quality.........
I know these discs wont last forever, but I used them up and I find the quality equal to my full disc burns at less than 1/2 the time and Im way away from my crappy uneaven edges even if the start to peel away after time..... maybe Ill get an extra year or so out of the disk .... my kids are happy anyways cuse they all have a copy of their movies now and I can put the origional away for the grand kids someday! ;)
Hope this helps some one.... Im new at this and a newbie ... so Im learning through trial and error .... let me know if this helps anyone.
