I was reading an article about dual layer dvd burners saying that the DL DVD+R is compatible with most dvd players. I thought it was the DVD-R format that was compatible with dvd players. Regardless, I want to buy a newer, faster dvd burner, and want to make sure that which ever one I buy, is compatible with making movies that I can play on my home dvd player. Has anyone else heard the DL DVD+R being the compatible format? For the life of me, I can not remember which brand name of dvd burner they were talking about, and I can't remember where I read this article.

Any recommendations of dvd burners would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am new to the "dual layer" format. What does "booktype" mean? I looked it up in the glossary on this web site, but there is nothing there.

Hummmm.... let me see, I'll try alright. Book typing meaning you're changing the DVD+R/DVD+R DL or DVD+RW format into DVD-ROM in prior to burning, then once it's successfully burned, it will show as a DVD-ROM format and not DVD+R/DVD+R DL or DVD+RW anymore. It helps to fool your dvd player (any 2 years old or older) thinking that it's an original pressed DVD-ROM format, which by all means you did changed the book type into DVD-ROM.

Yes... DVD-ROM is the universal format for all functional dvd players, even all commercial dvds (original dvds and PS2 games are pressed as DVD-ROM), therefore, it should be pretty sweet playing on any of your dvd players.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Thanks! How you explained it makes perfect sense. Now, if I want to make my own movies, or backup copies of existing movies, is there any brand name of a DVD Writer that is better then the other? Is there specific software I need in order to do this?

@soberfree

i have PM'd u the instructions, but PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK...it HAS been done, but you must be careful and knowledgeable about cross-flashing before you begin...there is ALWAYS the risk of "frying your drive" and this will NATURALLY VOID your warranty completely~ :)
