really odd burning problem

For the last month or so I have been able to burn cd's and dvd's without error messages using apps like nero, recordnow dx, and the default windows way. I can burn with both my internal cdrw writer and my external sony DVD writer(model drx-510UL), but after I burn
the cd or dvd with no error messages the files cannot be read properly if at all. When Nero does data verification it says it can't read about 90% of the files. When I try to read it on my or other's computers it slowly shows the files but freezes when I try to play them, sometimes I can play a couple seconds from an mp3 but it quickly freezes. Also sometimes it acts as if the cd is empty, not blank but empty. It also plays about half the songs on my car's mp3 cd player but then starts skipping and freezes the thing. I
always burn on 1x to 4x and have tried different cd brands that have worked in the past. Its the same problem whether its a data or audio on a cdr or a data disc on a DVD+R. But I have been able to write a small video DVD using Sonic MyDVD.

When this problem started I upgrade nero to nero 6, but still receive the same exact
problem.

I can't find help anywhere else and am very very confused.
